Amused

Chapter 2: The Name on the Envelope

Ethan regained consciousness to the smell of antiseptic and the sound of his mother arguing.

"She should be arrested," Margaret was saying.

"I don't care what story she invents. My son was deceived in front of three hundred people!""

A male voice answered calmly.

"Mrs. Caldwell, the police will determine whether a crime occurred. Right now, your son needs to remain still.""

Ethan opened his eyes.

He was lying on a leather sofa in a private suite adjoining the ballroom. A paramedic knelt beside him, checking his blood pressure. Victor stood near the window, his tuxedo jacket missing and his white shirt stained with champagne.

Ethan tried to sit up.

"Claire.""

Margaret turned immediately.

"Don't say her name.""

"Where is she?""

"Security has her in the bridal suite.""

Ethan pushed the paramedic's hand away.

"I need to see her.""

"You need a hospital," Victor said.

"I said I need to see her!""

His voice cracked on the last word.

The paramedic exchanged a glance with Victor.

"Mr. Caldwell, your blood pressure is elevated, and you lost consciousness. You should be evaluated at a hospital.""

Ethan swung his legs over the edge of the sofa.

"Then evaluate me after I get an answer.""

Margaret grabbed his arm.

"She made a fool of you. Do you understand that? Your wedding is already all over social media.""

Ethan stared at his mother.

"Is that what matters to you?""

"Your reputation matters to everyone connected to this family!""

He pulled his arm free.

"Get out.""

Margaret looked as though he had slapped her.

"Ethan—"

"Get out, Mother.""

For once, Margaret obeyed.

Victor waited until the door closed.

Then he sat beside Ethan.

"There's something you need to know.""

Ethan rubbed his face.

"If you say you warned me, I'll throw you out of this building.""

"I'm not going to say that.""

"Good.""

Victor hesitated.

"About two weeks ago, I received an email from someone claiming Claire wasn't who she said she was.""

Ethan's head snapped up.

"What?""

"It included photographs. Old photographs. I thought they were fake.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I couldn't verify anything, and I didn't want to destroy your relationship over an anonymous message.""

Ethan stared at him.

"What photographs?""

Victor took out his phone.

"I deleted the email after the sender stopped responding. But I saved the attachments.""

He opened a folder.

The first photograph showed a young woman standing outside a small brick house. She had dark hair, a narrow face, and a birthmark beside her left ear.

The second photograph showed an elderly woman standing in the same place.

The third showed a man with silver hair and a scar over his eyebrow.

Ethan snatched the phone.

"Who is this?""

"I don't know.""

He enlarged the first photograph.

The young woman wore a simple white dress. Around her neck hung a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon.

Ethan felt a strange chill.

Claire wore that same pendant beneath her wedding gown.

He had noticed it on their first date, when she'd tucked it beneath her blouse.

When he asked about it, she'd said it was the only thing she'd inherited from her grandmother.

Ethan looked at Victor.

"Find the sender.""

"I tried. The email address was temporary.""

"Then find the man in the third photograph.""

Victor's expression changed.

"That's the part I didn't tell you.""

He took the phone back and enlarged the photograph of the scarred man.

"His name is Daniel Mercer. He was a private investigator in New York for more than forty years. He disappeared from public records after a woman named Evelyn Hart died in 1996.""

Ethan frowned.

"Why would a dead woman matter?""

"Because Evelyn Hart was your father's first wife.""

The room went silent.

Ethan's father, Richard Caldwell, had died eleven years earlier. His first marriage had never been discussed at home. Ethan knew only that Richard had been married before he met Margaret.

His father had once described the relationship as a youthful mistake.

Ethan had never asked for more.

"What does this have to do with Claire?""

Victor looked toward the closed door.

"I think you should ask her.""

Across the hallway, Claire sat alone in the bridal suite.

Her wedding dress lay in a heap on the floor. Her artificial face rested on the dressing table beside the blonde wig. Without the costume, she looked exhausted.

A security guard stood outside the door.

She had refused to explain herself to the police until she could speak privately with Ethan.

When a nurse brought her a glass of water, Claire thanked her.

"Have you known Ethan long?"" the nurse asked.

"Longer than he knows.""

The nurse gave an uncertain smile.

"Well, I hope you both find a way through this.""

Claire looked at the mirror.

"Some things can't be repaired.""

The nurse left.

Claire opened her purse and removed a small photograph.

It showed a little boy sitting on a man's shoulders beside a lake. The man had dark hair and a familiar smile. The boy wore a red baseball cap.

Ethan had once shown her the same photograph.

He had said it was the happiest day of his childhood.

He had never noticed the woman standing in the background.

Claire touched the photograph with a trembling finger.

Then the door opened.

Ethan stood there, pale and furious, with Victor behind him.

The security guard began to protest.

"Sir, you're not supposed to—"

"Leave us," Ethan ordered.

The guard hesitated.

Victor stepped forward.

"Give them five minutes.""

The guard closed the door.

Ethan stared at Claire.

"Tell me your real name.""

She placed the photograph back in her purse.

"Evelyn.""

He shook his head.

"No. Evelyn Hart is dead.""

Claire's face tightened.

"That's what the newspapers said.""

"Who are you?""

"My name is Evelyn Hart.""

Ethan let out a disbelieving laugh.

"You're telling me you're my father's first wife?""

"Yes.""

"That's impossible. You would be nearly eighty years old.""

"I am seventy-eight.""

"You married my father before he met my mother.""

"Yes.""

"And you died thirty years ago.""

Claire—or Evelyn—looked down at her hands.

"I disappeared thirty years ago. That is not the same thing.""

Ethan gripped the back of a chair.

"Why did you marry me?""

She lifted her eyes.

"Because I needed to know what kind of man you'd become.""

"You could have asked me questions! You could have told me who you were!""

"And would you have listened?""

"Of course!""

Evelyn gave a sorrowful smile.

"Your father said the same thing.""

Ethan flinched.

"What did my father do to you?""

For the first time, Evelyn looked frightened.

She glanced toward the door.

"Did Daniel give you an envelope?""

Ethan stiffened.

"How do you know about Daniel?""

"Because he was supposed to deliver it before the ceremony.""

Victor stepped closer.

"What is in the envelope?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"I don't know. Daniel never told me. He only said that if I married Ethan, the truth would finally become impossible to bury.""

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Truth about what?""

Before she could answer, the door burst open.

Margaret entered with two uniformed officers.

"There she is!"" she shouted.

"That's the woman who defrauded my son!""

One officer approached Evelyn.

"Ma'am, we need you to come with us.""

Evelyn stood slowly.

"I'll come willingly.""

Ethan stepped between them.

"Wait.""

Margaret seized his sleeve.

"Don't you dare defend her!""

He turned on his mother.

"Did you know who she was?""

Margaret froze.

It was only a second, but Ethan saw it.

The flicker of recognition.

The quick tightening of her mouth.

Then she recovered.

"Of course not. How could I possibly know?""

Evelyn looked at her.

"Hello, Margaret.""

Margaret went white.

One of the officers glanced between them.

"Do you two know each other?""

Margaret forced a laugh.

"This woman is clearly delusional.""

Evelyn reached into her purse and removed a folded piece of paper.

"Would you like me to tell him what you said to me in 1995?""

Margaret lunged for the paper.

Victor caught her wrist.

"Don't touch her.""

For a moment, the two women stared at each other across the room.

Then Margaret whispered, "You should have stayed dead.""

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Ethan stared at his mother.

"Stayed dead?""

Margaret jerked her hand away from Victor.

"I didn't mean—"

Evelyn placed the folded paper on the table.

"You have thirty seconds to tell him the truth, Margaret.""

Margaret's eyes darted toward the officers.

Then toward Ethan.

Finally, she looked at Evelyn with naked hatred.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

Evelyn smiled sadly.

"Neither did you, when you signed the adoption papers.""

Ethan went perfectly still.

"Adoption papers?""

Margaret opened her mouth.

No words came out.

And at that exact moment, Ethan's phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a single photograph.

Ethan stared at the screen, his blood turning cold.

The image showed his father standing beside Evelyn, holding a newborn baby.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written four words:

*YOUR SON IS ALIVE.*
