Chapter 7: The Son Who Pulled the Trigger
The second gunshot echoed through the lake house, followed by the sound of glass falling from the shattered window.
Ethan pressed himself against the floor, one arm shielding Daniel. Somewhere beside them, Rebecca cursed under her breath. The room smelled of gunpowder and wet pine drifting through the broken window.
Then a woman's scream cut through the darkness.
"Margaret!""
It was Evelyn.
She had been waiting in the car with one of the security officers, but the gunfire had drawn her toward the house. She appeared in the doorway, her silver head uncovered, her wedding dress torn at the hem.
Margaret stood near the desk, frozen, the pistol trembling in her hand.
Arthur was nowhere to be seen.
"Put the gun down!"" Ethan shouted.
Margaret turned toward him.
For one strange second, she looked less like his mother than a frightened child caught doing something unforgivable.
Then a man's voice came from the hallway.
"Don't listen to him, Mother. He'll take everything from us.""
Thomas stepped into the room.
He wore a dark jacket and black gloves. A pistol hung loosely in his right hand. At thirty, he had the hard, watchful eyes of someone who had spent his entire life expecting betrayal.
Behind him stood a broad-shouldered man holding a flashlight.
Thomas looked at Ethan, then at Daniel.
"So," he said.
"The family reunion is complete.""
Ethan rose slowly, keeping his hands visible.
"Thomas, put the gun down.""
Thomas laughed.
"You don't even know me, and already you're giving orders.""
"I know enough. You were promised the company. You were told I was keeping you from your inheritance.""
"Because you were.""
"I didn't know you existed!""
Thomas's expression hardened.
"That's convenient.""
"It's the truth.""
"The truth?"" Thomas repeated. He pointed his gun toward the desk.
"My whole life was built around that word. Richard told me I was special. He told me I was the son he couldn't acknowledge because the world wouldn't understand. He said that one day I would have everything.""
He turned toward Margaret.
"And what did you tell me?""
Margaret's face had gone white.
"I told you what Richard told me.""
"You told me Ethan knew.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
Thomas laughed bitterly.
"You were trying to protect yourself.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Thomas, I know what Richard did to you.""
Thomas swung the gun toward him.
"Don't pretend you understand me.""
"I understand what it's like to grow up without knowing who you are.""
"No, you don't."" Thomas's voice cracked.
"You had a family. You had people who raised you. You had a name.""
"A name Richard gave me without telling me the truth.""
"And now you get to walk into this house and claim everything!""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't want your inheritance.""
Thomas stared at him.
"Then you're the only Caldwell who doesn't.""
Ethan took another careful step.
"Whatever my father promised you, we can resolve it legally. You don't have to do this.""
Thomas's gun jerked toward him.
"Legally? Do you know what lawyers told me when I tried to challenge the trust? They told me I had no standing.
No proof. No rights. They said I was a ghost.""
He glanced at Rebecca.
"Isn't that right, Ms. Shaw?""
Rebecca kept her voice steady.
"Your rights depend on evidence and the applicable trust provisions. But if the records are genuine, there may be grounds to challenge the estate.""
Thomas smiled without humor.
"May be. Might be. Could be. Lawyers have a thousand ways to say no.""
He turned toward Margaret.
"Give me the envelope.""
Margaret clutched it to her chest.
"No.""
Thomas's face changed.
"Mother.""
"You said you would bring Lily here. You promised me she was safe.""
"She is.""
"Then where is she?""
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
The broad-shouldered man shifted his weight.
For the first time, Thomas seemed uncertain.
Ethan noticed.
"Where's Lily, Thomas?""
Thomas ignored him.
"Give me the envelope.""
Margaret backed away.
"You told me this would be over tonight.""
"It will be.""
"You said nobody would get hurt.""
Thomas raised his gun.
"Mother, don't make me ask again.""
Margaret dropped the envelope.
It landed near the desk.
Thomas moved toward it.
Daniel lunged.
The two men crashed into a chair. The gun discharged, sending a bullet into the ceiling. Evelyn screamed as plaster rained down.
Ethan grabbed Thomas's wrist while Daniel struggled to pin his arm. Thomas struck Ethan across the face, then drove his knee into Daniel's stomach.
The broad-shouldered man rushed forward.
Rebecca seized the heavy brass lamp from the desk and swung it at his shoulder. He stumbled into the wall.
"Run!"" she shouted.
Ethan grabbed the envelope and pulled Daniel toward the doorway.
But Margaret remained beside the desk.
She was staring at Thomas as though she had only just recognized him.
"Thomas," she whispered.
"What have you become?""
He stopped struggling for half a second.
Then he looked at her with something colder than anger.
"What you raised me to be.""
He shoved Daniel away and ran toward the back staircase.
The broad-shouldered man followed.
Ethan started after them, but Arthur appeared from the darkness at the far end of the hallway.
He was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow.
"Don't follow them!"" Arthur shouted.
Ethan stopped.
"Where's Lily?""
Arthur grabbed his arm.
"She's not here.""
"Then where is she?""
Arthur looked at Margaret.
"Ask her.""
Margaret sank into a chair.
The pistol lay on the floor beside her.
Ethan approached slowly.
"Mother, where is Lily?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I'm not lying!""
Arthur's voice was merciless.
"You told Thomas that Lily would be here. You knew he was coming.""
Margaret looked up at him.
"Because he said he had her!""
The room fell silent.
Daniel wiped blood from his lip.
"Thomas has Lily?""
Margaret began to cry.
"He told me he found her. He said she was willing to come. I thought if I could bring her here, we could settle everything.""
Ethan stared at his mother.
"Settle what?""
Margaret covered her face.
"The trust. The inheritance. All of it.""
Rebecca retrieved the fallen envelope and checked its contents.
"The amendment is gone.""
Ethan turned.
"What?""
She held up the empty envelope.
"Whatever document was inside has been removed.""
Arthur's expression darkened.
"Thomas has it.""
Outside, an engine roared to life.
Ethan ran to the window.
A black SUV tore down the gravel drive, its headlights sweeping across the trees. He caught a glimpse of Thomas in the passenger seat.
Then the vehicle vanished into the night.
Daniel stood beside him, breathing hard.
"We have to find Lily.""
Ethan turned toward Margaret.
"Where would Thomas take her?""
She shook her head helplessly.
"I don't know.""
Arthur stepped forward.
"There's one place.""
Everyone looked at him.
"The old Caldwell hotel in Albany. Richard kept an apartment there under a false name. He used it whenever he needed to meet people without being recognized.""
Rebecca frowned.
"Why would Thomas take Lily there?""
Arthur's expression became grim.
"Because that's where Richard kept the original records.""
Ethan gripped the envelope.
"And if Thomas gets those records?""
Arthur looked toward the dark window.
"He'll learn why Richard never acknowledged him.""
A cold silence filled the room.
Daniel spoke first.
"What are you saying?""
Arthur looked at him.
"Thomas isn't simply the forgotten son.""
He paused.
"He's the only child Richard never intended to inherit anything.""
Margaret began shaking her head.
"No. No, that's not possible.""
Arthur's voice dropped.
"Because Thomas was never Richard's son.""
Ethan stared at him.
May you like
Outside, the wind swept across the lake.
And somewhere on the dark road to Albany, Thomas Caldwell was driving toward the one secret his father had spent thirty years trying to bury.
