Amused

Chapter 7: The Necklace That Held The Truth

My father didn’t move.

That was the most frightening part.

Not the phone call.

Not Richard’s voice.

Not the fact that a man everyone believed was dead had just spoken my name like he had been waiting for me.

It was my father’s silence.

Because silence was an answer.

I looked at him.

“Where is it?””

His eyes stayed on the ground.

“Dad.””

He swallowed.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I spent my entire life thinking my mother abandoned me.””

The garden remained silent.

“I spent years believing she left because she didn’t love me enough to stay.””

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“And you knew the truth.””

My father looked up.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“Stop saying that.””

The words came out louder than I expected.

Several guests looked away.

Because everyone knew.

This was no longer a wedding.

This was a family falling apart in public.

“You don’t get to call it protection when you take away someone’s choice.””

My father looked broken.

“I was scared.””

“So was I.””

My voice softened.

“But I was a child.””

The sentence hit him.

Because it was true.

I wasn’t an adult making decisions.

I was twelve years old when my mother disappeared.

I was twelve when I needed answers.

And instead, everyone decided silence was easier.

Daniel stood beside me.

His presence gave me strength.

Not because he wanted to fight my battles.

Because he reminded me I didn’t have to face them alone.

Evelyn looked at my father.

“Where is Eleanor’s necklace?””

My father closed his eyes.

“I don’t have it anymore.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I kept it for years.””

“Then where is it?””

He hesitated.

“I gave it to someone.””

The air changed.

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

And that was when I realized something.

There was still fear in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“Dad.””

His hands trembled.

“The necklace wasn’t just jewelry.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at her.

My aunt’s voice lowered.

“Eleanor had a hidden compartment created inside it.””

I stared.

“A compartment?””

“Yes.””

“What was inside?””

Evelyn looked at the old letter in my hand.

“Your mother never trusted digital records.””

Daniel understood immediately.

“She kept evidence physically.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Documents. Names. Transactions.””

My stomach tightened.

“The proof.””

“Yes.””

I looked at my father.

“You had it.””

He looked away.

“For a while.””

“Then who did you give it to?””

My father’s silence lasted too long.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Thomas.””

My father finally spoke.

“Richard found out I had it.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“What?””

My father looked at me.

“After your mother disappeared, Richard came looking.””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“He threatened you.””

My father nodded.

“I thought he wanted the necklace.””

“And?””

“He did.””

My heart raced.

“But you still gave it away?””

My father looked devastated.

“I had no choice.””

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“There is always a choice.””

My father looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I wiped my tears.

“I don’t.””

A long silence followed.

Then my father whispered:

“He threatened you.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

“He knew about you.””

My father’s voice cracked.

“He knew where you went to school. He knew your schedule. He knew everything.””

The anger inside me shifted.

Not disappeared.

But changed.

Because suddenly, I saw the terrified man behind my father’s mistakes.

“He said if I didn’t give him the necklace, he would come after you.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

Because she believed him.

“You should have told me.””

My father nodded.

“I know.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“But you didn’t.””

He lowered his head.

“No.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Daniel asked quietly:

“So who has the necklace now?””

My father took a deep breath.

“I gave it to someone who could hide it.””

“Who?””

My father looked toward the parking area.

The answer came slowly.

“Your mother’s closest friend.””

Evelyn frowned.

“Margaret?””

My father nodded.

A wave of recognition crossed Evelyn’s face.

“Margaret Ellis.””

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked troubled.

“She disappeared years ago.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He turned the phone toward me.

A message.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

*Stop searching for the necklace. You already found it.*

My blood went cold.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked around.

Everyone was suddenly uneasy.

Then another message arrived.

This time with a picture.

I looked at it.

And my entire body froze.

It was a photo of my mother.

Not an old photograph.

A recent one.

Impossible.

My hands started shaking.

“Daniel…”

He stared at the screen.

“Emma, don’t panic.””

But I was already panicking.

Because the woman in the picture looked exactly like my mother.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

I looked at Evelyn.

“That’s not possible.””

Evelyn took the phone.

Her face changed instantly.

“No…”

She whispered the word.

Like she had just seen a ghost.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“This picture…”

Her voice broke.

“It was taken yesterday.””

The world stopped.

My mother had been gone for twenty-five years.

She was supposed to be dead.

I looked at my father.

He looked just as shocked.

“Dad…”

He shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who sent this?””

Another message appeared.

Everyone watched.

The phone screen lit up.

*Ask your father why he lied about Eleanor’s death.*

My father went completely still.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His face changed.

The same fear from years ago returned.

The fear of someone who knew the truth but was terrified to say it.

“Your mother…”

He stopped.

“Your mother wasn’t supposed to disappear that night.””

My heart pounded.

“What are you saying?””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, I saw him as someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy to survive.

“She was taken.””

The words shattered everything.

The garden disappeared.

The guests disappeared.

The wedding disappeared.

There was only that sentence.

My mother wasn’t gone.

She was taken.

“By who?””

My father looked at Evelyn.

Then at the phone.

Then back at me.

“I don’t know.””

Nobody believed him.

Not even himself.

Because his next words betrayed him.

“But I know who helped.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who?””

My father’s eyes moved toward someone standing among the guests.

Someone who had been silent the entire time.

Someone who had watched everything.

My mother.

My inheritance.

The necklace.

The secret.

All of it.

And then my father said a name.

A name that made Evelyn step back in horror.

A name that made Daniel immediately reach for his phone.

A name I never expected.

“Your mother’s disappearance was helped by…”

He swallowed.

“Someone in this garden.””

Everyone turned.

May you like

My father pointed.

And the person he revealed was the last person anyone expected.
