Amused

Chapter 4: The Inheritance They Tried To Erase

The name on the document stared back at me.

*Emma Whitmore Carter.*

For years, I had been Emma Hayes.

A quiet girl.

A forgotten daughter.

A younger sister who was always told to stay in the background.

But now, standing beneath the wedding lights while hundreds of strangers watched, another name had appeared.

A name connected to a family I had never known.

A family my parents had spent decades pretending didn’t exist.

I looked at the woman holding the folder.

“Who are you?””

Her expression softened.

“My name is Evelyn Whitmore.””

The garden erupted into whispers.

The name meant something to everyone except me.

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t look surprised anymore.

He looked concerned.

Like pieces of a puzzle were finally coming together.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“I was your mother’s older sister.””

My breath caught.

“My aunt?””

She nodded.

“Your mother, Eleanor, was my little sister.””

I stared at the woman in front of me.

A stranger who somehow carried pieces of my past.

“She told me about you.””

My eyes burned.

“She told you about me?””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“She told me everything.””

My fingers tightened around Daniel’s.

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

The question came out sharper than I intended.

Evelyn looked down.

Because she had an answer.

A painful one.

“Because I tried.””

The garden became silent again.

“I tried many times.””

She looked toward my father.

“But someone made sure my letters never reached you.””

Every eye moved toward him.

My father’s face hardened.

“Don’t do this here.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Where would you prefer?””

Her voice was calm.

“In another twenty-five years?””

My father said nothing.

Daniel stepped forward slightly.

“Mr. Hayes, is this true?””

My father looked uncomfortable.

“This is a family matter.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“No.””

He looked around.

“This became everyone’s business the moment my wife was publicly humiliated because of a lie.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

My father looked away.

Victoria stood frozen beside the altar.

Her wedding had transformed into something completely different.

She had wanted people to see me as small.

Instead, everyone was learning that I had been hidden.

Not because I had nothing.

Because someone wanted me to believe I had nothing.

I turned back to Evelyn.

“What did my mother leave me?””

She opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old photographs.

Letters.

Legal papers.

“My sister was the rightful heir to a portion of the Whitmore family estate.””

I frowned.

“A portion?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your grandfather divided his assets among his children. When Eleanor rejected the marriage arrangement your grandfather wanted, she lost access to certain accounts.””

She paused.

“But she never lost what was legally hers.””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“What happened after Eleanor died?””

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward my father.

“That is the question we need answered.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at my father.

“What does she mean?””

He didn’t respond.

And his silence told me more than words could.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

For the first time, I didn’t see my father.

I saw a man who had kept a secret from me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me.””

He looked around at the guests.

At the people who had come to celebrate a wedding.

At the people who had just watched everything fall apart.

Then he sighed.

“When your mother died, you were young.””

“I was twelve.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Protect me from what?””

He hesitated.

“The Whitmore family.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

Not with humor.

“With lies.””

My father ignored her.

“Your mother’s family was dangerous.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Dangerous because they were wealthy?””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what they were like.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You’re right. He doesn’t.””

She looked at me.

“But Emma deserves to.””

I looked at the documents again.

“What happened to my inheritance?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was the answer.

My heart started pounding.

“Dad.””

His eyes closed briefly.

“Your mother left everything in a trust.””

“How much?””

He looked away.

“Emma…”

“How much?””

The garden waited.

Finally, Evelyn answered.

“Enough that you would never have needed anyone’s approval.””

The words hurt.

Because suddenly I understood.

All those years.

All those moments.

My father telling me money wasn’t important.

My mother telling me family was complicated.

My sister making jokes about my simple clothes.

They all knew something I didn’t.

They knew I had something.

And they let me feel like I had nothing.

Victoria finally spoke.

“This is ridiculous.””

Everyone turned.

She forced a laugh.

“You’re telling me Emma is some kind of secret heiress?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“No.””

Victoria blinked.

“No?””

“She is not valuable because of money.””

The older woman’s voice was firm.

“She was valuable before anyone knew her name.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Because they were the exact opposite of everything Victoria believed.

Victoria looked at me.

“So all this time…”

She stopped.

I waited.

But she couldn’t say it.

She couldn’t admit she had judged me unfairly.

Not even now.

Alexander stepped closer to her.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

His voice was low.

“We need to talk.””

She frowned.

“About what?””

He looked toward Daniel.

And fear crossed his face again.

“The acquisition.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“What does that have to do with this?””

Daniel answered.

“Everything.””

Everyone looked at him.

He reached into his pocket and took out his phone.

“Alexander’s company has been negotiating with Carter International for six months.””

Alexander went pale.

“Mr. Carter…”

Daniel continued.

“He presented himself as a loyal partner.””

His eyes moved toward Victoria.

“But apparently, he didn’t mention he was marrying into a family that had been hiding information connected to my wife.””

Victoria stared.

“Wait.””

She looked at Alexander.

“You knew?””

Alexander looked trapped.

“Knew what?””

“That Emma was connected to the Whitmores?””

“No.””

His answer came too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

So did everyone else.

“You’re lying.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why were you investigating the Whitmore trust?””

The garden went completely silent.

Victoria slowly turned toward Alexander.

“What?””

Alexander didn’t answer.

“Alexander?””

He looked nervous.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

Victoria stepped back.

“You were investigating Emma?””

The realization hit her.

For once, she wasn’t angry at me.

She was angry because she realized she had been used.

Daniel looked at Alexander.

“Your company requested confidential information about Whitmore assets two months ago.””

Alexander swallowed.

“That was business.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“That was personal.””

I looked at Alexander.

The man who had stood beside my sister in front of hundreds of people.

The man who looked perfect.

Suddenly didn’t look perfect anymore.

Evelyn closed the folder.

“There is more.””

I looked at her.

“More?””

She nodded.

“My sister didn’t only leave you an inheritance.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

She reached into the folder and pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Yellowed.

My name written across the front.

My mother’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

My hands started shaking.

“She left you this letter.””

I took it slowly.

The entire world disappeared.

I could hear nothing.

Not the guests.

Not the music.

Not the whispers.

Only my mother’s handwriting.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“What does it say?””

I looked at the envelope.

And I knew.

Whatever was inside had been hidden for a reason.

I opened it.

The first line was enough to make my knees weak.

*My dear Emma, if you are reading this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth.*

I stopped breathing.

Then I read the next sentence.

May you like

And my entire understanding of my family changed forever.

*Your father is not the only person who betrayed us.*
