Amused

Chapter 2: The Man Behind The Simple Suit

For five seconds, nobody moved.

The wedding guests stood frozen beneath the golden lights, caught between confusion and disbelief.

The same people who had laughed moments earlier now avoided looking directly at me.

Their champagne glasses remained untouched.

Their whispers had changed.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Did he say Carter?””

“That can’t be…”

I heard every word.

But I barely processed any of it.

Because Daniel was standing beside me, holding my hand like nothing had changed.

Like he wasn’t the center of a storm.

Like the entire garden wasn’t suddenly questioning everything they thought they knew.

Victoria’s fingers tightened around the microphone.

Her perfect expression was gone.

For the first time in my life, I saw something I never expected to see on my sister’s face.

Fear.

“Alexander,” she said slowly, turning toward her fiancé.

“Explain.””

Alexander didn’t answer.

His eyes remained fixed on Daniel.

The confident man who had been smiling for photographers ten minutes ago looked completely different now. His shoulders were tense. His jaw was tight.

“Alexander,” Victoria repeated louder.

“Why did you call him Mr. Carter?””

The silence became unbearable.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Because he knows exactly who I am.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Victoria looked back at him.

“You expect me to believe this?””

Daniel tilted his head slightly.

“I don’t expect anything from you, Victoria.””

The way he said her name made her expression shift.

Not because he was angry.

Because he sounded like someone who had already accepted the truth about her.

Someone who had stopped hoping she would change.

I looked at him.

“Daniel…”

He glanced down at me.

“Are you okay?””

The question almost made me laugh.

Three hundred strangers had watched my sister humiliate me.

My own family had stayed silent.

And somehow, the person everyone called a nobody was the only one asking if I was okay.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

His thumb gently brushed over my hand.

“Then stay with me.””

A few feet away, Alexander finally found his voice.

“Mr. Carter, I didn’t know you would be here.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Obviously.””

Alexander swallowed.

The guests noticed.

Everyone noticed.

The powerful groom who had walked into the wedding like he owned the world was now standing in front of Daniel like an employee waiting for instructions.

Victoria saw it too.

And she hated it.

“You’re telling me,” she said, looking between them, “that my sister’s husband is your boss?””

Alexander didn’t respond.

That was answer enough.

A wave of murmurs moved through the crowd.

Victoria’s face hardened.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“This is some kind of misunderstanding.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

She forced a laugh.

“You’re a businessman? Fine. Maybe you know each other.

Maybe you work together. But that doesn’t mean…”

She stopped.

Because Alexander had finally looked at her.

And there was something in his eyes.

Something that told her she had already gone too far.

“Victoria,” he said quietly.

“What?””

“Stop talking.””

The entire garden went silent.

My sister stared at him.

Nobody had ever spoken to Victoria like that.

Not even our parents.

“What did you say?””

Alexander looked embarrassed.

“I said stop.””

Her expression changed.

“You’re defending him?””

Alexander looked toward Daniel.

“I’m trying to stop you from making this worse.””

Victoria laughed once.

A cold, uncomfortable sound.

“Worse?””

She pointed at me.

“He lied to everyone about who he was!””

Daniel’s expression didn’t change.

“I never lied.””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she knew it was true.

Daniel had never told anyone he was poor.

He had never pretended.

He simply never corrected them.

And somehow, that bothered her more.

“You let us think you had nothing,” she said.

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

He glanced around at the guests.

“You decided I had nothing because of what I wore.””

The words landed harder than shouting ever could.

Several people looked away.

I remembered every dinner.

Every family gathering.

Every time someone asked Daniel what he did, then immediately lost interest after hearing a simple answer.

He worked in technology.

He built companies.

He traveled.

But he never introduced himself with a title.

He never walked into a room demanding respect.

That was what made people underestimate him.

Daniel turned to me.

“I told you I didn’t want a wedding where people came because of my name.””

I nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

A month before our wedding, I had asked him why he didn’t invite more business partners.

Why there were no executives.

Why there were no famous names.

He had smiled.

“Because I’m marrying you, Emma. Not hosting a business event.””

At the time, I thought he was being romantic.

Now I understood.

He had been protecting the only thing he cared about.

A normal life.

Victoria stepped forward.

“So this was all an act?””

Daniel looked confused.

“What was?””

“Pretending to be ordinary.””

He looked at me.

Then back at her.

“I wasn’t pretending.””

The answer stunned her.

“I grew up knowing that people treat you differently when they know what you own.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel continued.

“I wanted one person in my life who loved me without knowing my company, my money, or my position.””

His eyes moved to me.

“And I found her.””

My chest tightened.

I had never heard him say it that way.

Victoria’s face changed.

Not because she felt sorry.

Because she realized something.

She had spent years measuring people by what they could offer.

And the person she had looked down on had something she never had.

Someone who loved him before knowing his power.

A wedding guest near the front whispered, “What company does he own?””

Another answered quietly, “Carter International.””

The name spread through the crowd.

I saw people exchange shocked looks.

Even my parents looked stunned.

My father stepped forward for the first time.

“Daniel…”

Daniel turned.

My father hesitated.

The man who had barely spoken to him at family dinners now looked nervous.

“You’re…”

Daniel nodded once.

“Yes.””

My father’s face changed.

Suddenly, every memory came back.

Every time he had ignored Daniel’s opinions.

Every time he had called him “a nice young man” with a tone that meant he didn’t think much of him.

But Daniel didn’t look angry.

That somehow made it worse.

Because anger would have been easier to dismiss.

Disappointment was harder.

Victoria lowered the microphone.

Her hand was shaking.

“This doesn’t change anything.””

Everyone looked at her.

She lifted her chin.

“You embarrassed my wedding.””

A stunned silence followed.

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Daniel looked at her.

“I embarrassed your wedding?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the guests.

“Everyone came here to celebrate me.””

The sentence revealed everything.

Not the wedding.

Not the marriage.

Not love.

Her.

Daniel stared at her for a long moment.

Then he asked softly:

“Victoria, do you even know why Emma invited me into her life?””

Victoria frowned.

“What kind of question is that?””

“Because she was the only person who treated me like a human being before she knew my name.””

The words hit the garden like thunder.

I remembered the first time I met Daniel.

Not at a luxury event.

Not in a company building.

At a small coffee shop on a rainy afternoon.

He had been sitting alone with an old laptop that looked like it was barely working.

The first thing I noticed wasn’t his clothes.

It was the way he smiled at the exhausted cashier.

The way he thanked everyone.

The way he listened.

I didn’t know he was wealthy.

I didn’t care.

Victoria had always looked for diamonds.

I had found kindness.

Daniel squeezed my hand.

Then he turned toward Alexander.

“Your company’s acquisition proposal is still on my desk.””

Alexander’s face went pale.

Victoria looked between them.

“What acquisition proposal?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence frightened her more than anything.

Daniel continued.

“After today, I’ll be reviewing whether that partnership should continue.””

Alexander’s breathing changed.

“Mr. Carter, please.””

Victoria stared.

“Please?””

She looked at her fiancé.

“You’re begging him?””

Alexander looked away.

And that was the moment Victoria finally understood.

Her wedding had not been interrupted by a stranger.

It had been interrupted by the one person in the room who had the power to change everything.

But as Daniel prepared to walk away from the altar, his phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

For the first time that day, Daniel looked surprised.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his eyes moved toward me.

“Are you sure?””

My heart sank.

Something was wrong.

Daniel’s grip on my hand tightened.

“What did you say her name was?””

The garden went silent again.

Because the person on the phone had just mentioned a name.

My name.

May you like

And Daniel’s face revealed that whatever was happening had nothing to do with Victoria’s wedding anymore.

It was about a secret from my past that I had never told him.
