Amused

Chapter 9: The Trap at Midnight

Daniel called Claire immediately.

She answered on the second ring.

“Daniel?””

“Where are the children?””

“At the apartment. Why?””

“Don't open the door for anyone. Don't leave the building. Call the police if someone approaches you.””

Claire's voice tightened.

“What happened?””

Daniel sent her the photograph.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “That was taken this morning.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“What?””

“I took Ethan and Sophie downstairs to get breakfast. I thought it was safe because the property manager knew us.””

“Did you see anyone watching you?””

“No.””

“Did anyone speak to you?””

Claire hesitated.

“A man in the lobby asked whether I was related to Grace. I told him I didn't know what he was talking about.””

“What did he look like?””

“Dark hair. Gray coat. A ring on his right hand.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The signet ring.

“Did he follow you?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Claire, I need you to stay with the children. Don't let anyone take them anywhere.””

“I won't.””

“And if you see that man again, don't approach him.””

“I understand.””

Daniel ended the call and immediately contacted Officer Brooks.

He explained the photograph, the unknown man, and Richard's threat. Officer Brooks told him to remain where he was while officers assessed the situation.

Daniel hated waiting.

But this time, he understood why it mattered.

If he rushed toward the apartment, he might walk straight into the trap.

If he ignored the threat, his children could be in danger.

He needed people who could act on evidence rather than fear.

Thomas stood beside him in the parking lot.

“Richard wants you alone,” he said.

“He's not getting that.””

“Good. But we need to think about why he sent the message.””

“He wants the key.””

“Or he wants you to believe he wants the key.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“Someone may be using the trust dispute to cover a different objective. Richard knows the company records. Vanessa knows your family.

Michael knows the inheritance. They may be working together, but we shouldn't assume they all want the same thing.””

Daniel thought about the old photograph.

The missing boy.

The woman who had used his name.

The altered genetic report.

“Maybe they're afraid of what the original records reveal.””

Thomas nodded.

“That's the strongest possibility we have.””

A police vehicle pulled into the parking lot.

Officer Brooks stepped out with another officer and approached them.

“We've received the messages,” she said.

“We're treating the threats seriously. We've also contacted the appropriate units to assess the children's immediate safety.””

“Can you arrest Richard?”” Daniel asked.

“Not solely because he sent a threatening message, unless the circumstances and applicable law support that action. We'll investigate, preserve the communications, and determine what further steps are warranted.””

Daniel forced himself to nod.

Officer Brooks continued.

“We need to know whether Richard has access to your company's security systems or the apartment's location information.””

“He has access to company systems. I don't know whether he has access to my personal accounts.””

“Then change your passwords from a secure device and contact your providers. Don't delete messages or attempt to access anyone else's accounts.””

Thomas handed her copies of Grace's documents and a description of the recording.

“We have evidence suggesting Richard may have been involved in obtaining confidential information about the family,” he said.

“We haven't established his role beyond what Grace said on the recording.””

Officer Brooks reviewed the material.

“That's helpful. We'll make sure the investigators receive it.””

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Mr. Mercer, I need you to understand something. We can't guarantee that no one will attempt to approach your children. We can take reasonable steps to reduce the risk, but you must follow the safety plan and report any new contact immediately.””

Daniel nodded.

“I will.””

His phone rang.

Claire.

He answered at once.

“What's happening?””

“Someone is at the apartment door.””

Daniel's blood turned to ice.

“Did you open it?””

“No.””

“Good. Move away from the door. Are the children with you?””

“Yes. Ethan is holding Sophie.””

Daniel heard a faint knock through the phone.

Then a man's voice.

“Claire? It's me.””

She covered the microphone, but Daniel could still hear her breathing.

“Who is it?”” he whispered.

“I don't know.””

The man knocked again.

“Claire, I know you're in there. I need to speak to you.””

Daniel looked at Officer Brooks.

She immediately signaled to the other officer, who began making arrangements to send officers to the apartment.

“Claire,” Daniel said, “don't answer him. Stay away from the door.””

The man spoke again.

“I'm not here to hurt anyone. I just want to talk to Ethan.””

Claire's voice trembled.

“He knows Ethan's name.””

“Do not open that door.””

The man sighed.

“Daniel told you lies about me, didn't he?””

Daniel went still.

Then the man said something that made Claire gasp.

“Tell my son I came to bring him home.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“My son,” he repeated.

The man continued.

“Ethan deserves to know who he really is.””

Claire backed away from the door.

“Please leave.””

“I'm not leaving without him.””

A loud bang shook the apartment.

Sophie began crying.

Daniel's body moved before his mind caught up.

He started toward his car.

Officer Brooks stepped into his path.

“Mr. Mercer, stop.””

“My children are in there!””

“And officers are on their way. If you rush into a confrontation, you could make the situation more dangerous for them.””

Daniel's hands shook.

He wanted to drive straight to the apartment.

He wanted to put himself between the man and his children.

But he heard Ethan's voice in his mind.

Am I really your son?

He couldn't risk making a reckless decision that would frighten the boy even more.

He forced himself to stay.

“Claire,” he said into the phone, “keep talking to me. Tell me what you hear.””

The man knocked again.

“Claire, please. You know who I am.””

She was crying now.

“No, I don't.””

“Yes, you do. You saw the photograph.””

A pause.

Then he said, “You know I'm Adrian.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The attorney's face had turned ashen.

The man continued.

“I'm the brother you've been searching for. And I came back for my son.””

Claire made a small, broken sound.

“You're not Adrian.””

The man laughed bitterly.

“You always were the clever one.””

Then came the sound of footsteps moving away from the door.

Claire waited several seconds before speaking.

“He's gone.””

Daniel didn't relax.

“Don't open the door.””

“I won't.””

“Stay with the children until the police arrive.””

She whispered, “Daniel, I think he was telling the truth.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What do you mean?””

“The voice. The way he spoke. I remember it from when I was little.””

He looked at the old photograph in Thomas's hand.

The boy who had disappeared.

The man who had returned under a name that might or might not belong to him.

The father who claimed Ethan.

“Claire,” Daniel said carefully, “even if he's Adrian, that doesn't mean he's Ethan's biological father. We still need proof.””

“I know.””

“And it doesn't give him the right to threaten my children.””

“No,” she whispered.

“It doesn't.””

The line remained open until officers arrived at the apartment.

They escorted Claire and the children to a secure location and took her statement. No one had forced entry, and the man was gone before officers reached the building.

Daniel didn't see his children until later that afternoon.

When he finally held them, Sophie wrapped both arms around his neck and refused to let go. Ethan stood close enough that their shoulders touched.

“Dad,” Ethan whispered, “was that man my father?””

Daniel crouched in front of him.

“I don't know, buddy. He claims he is, but we don't have reliable proof yet.””

“Does he want to take me?””

“He wants something. I don't know exactly what, and I won't pretend I do. But no one gets to make decisions about you by threatening us.””

Ethan looked toward the door.

“Can he make me go with him?””

“Not because he says so. Any decisions about your safety will be handled through the proper legal process. You won't be asked to face him alone.””

Ethan's lower lip trembled.

Daniel took his hands.

“You are not responsible for any of this. Not the money, not the key, not the secrets. Your only job is to be eight years old.””

Ethan began to cry.

Daniel pulled him close.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

That evening, Thomas received a call from a forensic investigator who had reviewed the recording from Grace's lockbox.

The investigator had identified a second voice in the background.

A man.

Not Michael.

Not Richard.

Someone whose identity was still being examined.

But there was another discovery.

The digital recorder contained a second file that hadn't been played earlier because it was stored in a separate folder.

Thomas called Daniel immediately.

“You need to hear this.””

Daniel arrived at the attorney's office with Officer Brooks' knowledge and permission to provide the recording to the investigation.

Thomas connected the recorder to a computer and opened the second file.

Grace's voice filled the room again.

“If you're hearing this, Daniel, then the first recording has already been found.””

A faint rustling sound followed.

“I need to tell you something I couldn't put in the letter.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Ethan was conceived during the winter when Michael was staying with us.””

Thomas turned toward him sharply.

The recording continued.

“Michael was ill, and we allowed him to stay in our guest room while he recovered. During that time, I discovered that he had been taking medication that affected his memory and behavior. He was confused, and he sometimes believed he was still living in the past.””

Daniel's face went numb.

Grace continued.

“I never had a relationship with Michael. I never betrayed Daniel. But I became worried that someone had altered medical records connected to the family, and I wanted to establish whether Michael's identity had been used without his knowledge.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

The recording crackled.

“Michael's son, Adrian, disappeared during that period. I later discovered that someone had used Adrian's records to create a false identity. I don't know whether the man claiming to be Adrian is truly my nephew, or whether someone is using his name to gain access to Ethan's trust.””

Thomas stopped the recording.

Daniel stared at him.

“Why would Grace say Michael was staying with us?””

“Because the recording may explain why she ordered the genetic test,” Thomas said.

“But it still doesn't prove Ethan's biological relationship to Michael or Adrian.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Play the rest.””

Thomas restarted the file.

Grace's voice returned.

“If Michael believes Ethan is his son, he may try to claim him. If Adrian is alive, he may have information that could prove the truth. But neither man should be allowed to use a child to settle an inheritance dispute.””

There was a long pause.

Then Grace spoke more softly.

“Daniel, I love you. I know you will be angry that I kept this from you. I was afraid of what the truth might do to our family, and I thought I could resolve it before you ever needed to know.””

Her breathing became uneven.

“I was wrong.””

Daniel's eyes filled.

“I should have told you. I should have trusted you to stand beside me, even when I was frightened.””

The recording ended.

Daniel sat motionless.

For the first time, he understood why Grace's letters had contained so many contradictions.

She hadn't been hiding a single secret.

She had been trying to separate several different mysteries: the stolen inheritance, Adrian's disappearance, Michael's identity, and the uncertain genetic evidence.

She had run out of time before she could connect them.

Thomas placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Daniel, we still don't know the biological truth. We need a properly authorized, independently verified test if that question becomes legally relevant. And we need the investigators to establish who altered the records.””

Daniel nodded.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Richard.

*Midnight. The old Mercer factory. Come alone, or I'll make sure the truth about Ethan becomes public.*

Daniel showed Thomas.

The attorney's face hardened.

“He's trying to force a meeting.””

“Then we don't give him one on his terms.””

Daniel forwarded the message to Officer Brooks.

The police would determine the appropriate response, and Daniel agreed not to approach the location himself.

But before the officers could finish reviewing the new threat, another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph of the blue lockbox.

It was open.

The documents were scattered across a metal table.

And beside them lay a fresh sheet of paper bearing a single sentence.

*The original evidence is already gone.*

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then he noticed the reflection in the metal tabletop.

A man stood behind the camera.

His face was partially visible.

And around his right hand was the gold signet ring.

The same ring Daniel had seen in the old photograph.

The same ring worn by the man who had threatened to take Ethan.

At the bottom of the image was a final message.

*Ask Richard who was in the house when Grace died.*

Daniel looked at Thomas.

May you like

The attorney whispered the question neither of them wanted to ask.

“What if the person who altered the evidence was there before Grace ever got sick?””
