Amused

Chapter 7: The Doctor Who Took Vanessa’s Money

Daniel read the message again.

*Ask your wife who paid the doctor.*

For several seconds, the hospital room seemed to tilt around him. The altered genetic report lay on the desk, its official-looking seal staring up at him like a threat. Beside it sat the original document, the one Grace had marked with her own handwriting.

One report suggested that Michael Mercer might be Ethan's biological father.

The other warned that someone had tampered with the testing process.

Neither proved the truth.

But together, they revealed something Daniel could no longer ignore.

Someone had been trying to manufacture a story about his son long before Vanessa raised the leather strap.

“Don't touch anything else,” Thomas said quietly.

Daniel looked at him.

“You think this message came from Michael?””

“I think someone wants us to follow a trail. That doesn't mean every piece of evidence along it is genuine.””

“Then how do we find out who paid the doctor?””

“We start with the hospital's records department, and we let the police know about the altered report.””

Daniel forwarded the message and photograph to Officer Brooks. He also requested that the hospital preserve the original genetic analysis, the associated laboratory records, and any documentation showing who had requested or paid for the testing.

The administrator returned shortly afterward.

“I've contacted our compliance department,” she said.

“We can preserve the records while the appropriate investigators determine what can be released. I can't discuss another patient's financial information without authorization.””

Daniel nodded.

He was beginning to understand how slowly the truth moved when it had to travel through official channels.

A lie could arrive in a text message.

The truth required paperwork, signatures, and people willing to look carefully.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

Daniel answered but said nothing.

“Daniel,” she began, “you need to stop listening to Thomas.””

“Why?””

“Because he's manipulating you.””

“Did you pay a doctor to falsify a genetic report?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa gave a short, incredulous laugh.

“What an absurd question.””

“It's a simple one.””

“I have never falsified anything. I was trying to protect you from Grace's lies.””

“Which lies?””

“She knew Michael was Ethan's father.””

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone.

“You told me you barely knew Michael existed.””

“I didn't know him personally.””

“But you knew about the trust. You knew about the genetic testing. You knew where Grace kept the key.””

“Because I found the documents after she died!””

“Then why did you ask me to come home before I knew about the report?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel waited.

Finally, she said, “Because I wanted to spare you.””

“From what?””

“From discovering that your entire marriage was built on a lie.””

He closed his eyes.

“You have one more chance to tell me the truth, Vanessa. Did you pay someone to alter that report?””

“No.””

“Did you know Michael was involved?””

“I knew he wanted the trust investigated.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Her voice rose.

“You're so determined to make me the villain that nothing I say will matter!””

Daniel glanced at Thomas.

The attorney silently motioned for him to keep the conversation going.

“Then help me understand,” Daniel said.

“Who is Michael to you?””

Vanessa's breathing became audible.

“He promised me that if I helped him recover what Grace stole, he'd give me my share.””

“Your share of what?””

“The inheritance.””

Daniel stared at the wall.

There it was.

Not innocence. Not concern. Not a misunderstanding.

Greed.

“You married me to get access to Ethan's trust.””

“I married you because I loved you!””

“Did you know who I was before we met?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Did Michael tell you about me?””

“He told me you were a widower. He told me you had two children and that Grace had hidden money from her family.””

“And you thought marrying me would help you get it?””

“I thought I could make everything right.””

“For whom?””

“For myself!””

The admission came out like a scream.

Then she seemed to realize what she'd said.

“Daniel, please. You don't understand. Michael promised me things. He told me the trust was rightfully his, that Grace had manipulated the documents, that Ethan's future was being built on stolen money.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to believe him.””

Daniel looked at the altered report.

“Did you pay the doctor?””

“No.””

“Then who did?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“I don't know.””

“Who created this report?””

“I don't know!””

“Then tell me something you do know.””

For a moment, he heard only breathing.

Then Vanessa whispered, “The doctor who handled Grace's tests was Dr. Alan Whitmore.””

Daniel glanced at Thomas.

The attorney's expression changed immediately.

“You know him?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas nodded.

“Whitmore was the physician who signed Grace's final medical summary.””

Daniel felt the floor drop away beneath him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know he was connected to the genetic testing. His name was on the medical records, but I never had reason to suspect him.””

Daniel returned to the phone.

“Vanessa, how did you learn about the report?””

She hesitated.

“Michael sent me a copy.””

“When?””

“Several months ago.””

“Before or after you married me?””

“Before.””

Daniel ended the call.

He couldn't listen to another word.

For months, he had mistaken his wife's patience for kindness. He had interpreted her interest in his children as love. He had believed that her questions about Grace were part of her effort to understand the woman who had come before her.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

Thomas gathered the documents.

“We need to speak to Whitmore.””

“And if he refuses?””

“Then we cooperate with the investigation and let the proper authorities compel whatever records they're entitled to obtain.””

Daniel nodded.

He wanted to confront the doctor immediately.

But he had learned enough over the last two days to understand that anger could destroy evidence as easily as it could expose a lie.

Before leaving the hospital, Daniel checked on the children.

Ethan was sitting beside Sophie in the waiting area, showing her a picture he'd drawn of their family. Daniel stood behind them and studied it.

There were four figures.

Daniel.

Ethan.

Sophie.

And Grace, drawn above them in the sky.

Vanessa was nowhere in the picture.

Ethan noticed him watching.

“Do you like it?””

Daniel crouched beside him.

“I love it.””

“Can we put it in our new house?””

“If that's what you want.””

Ethan studied the drawing.

“Dad, if Michael says he's my real father, does that mean I have to live with him?””

“No.””

“Even if the test says so?””

Daniel chose his words carefully.

“We don't know what the test really says yet. The original report was inconclusive, and someone appears to have altered another version. The police and the people who understand these tests will help us find out what's true.””

Ethan's eyes filled.

“But what if he's my father?””

Daniel took his son's hands.

“Biology can tell us something about where we come from. It cannot decide who gets to frighten you, hurt you, or make you feel unwanted. You are a child, Ethan. You are not a prize in an argument over money.””

Ethan leaned against him.

“Okay.””

Daniel held him for a long moment.

Then Sophie reached up and patted his cheek with a sticky hand.

“Daddy sad?””

Daniel managed a smile.

“A little, sweetheart.””

She offered him the stuffed rabbit.

He took it solemnly.

“Thank you.””

For the first time that day, Ethan laughed.

The sound was small, but it reminded Daniel what he was fighting for.

Not an inheritance.

Not his reputation.

Not even the truth about Grace's family.

He was fighting for the ordinary, peaceful childhood his children had been denied.

And he would not let anyone turn them into weapons again.

Dr. Alan Whitmore's office was closed when Daniel and Thomas arrived.

A receptionist explained that the doctor had canceled his afternoon appointments and left early. She couldn't say when he would return.

Daniel asked whether they could leave a message.

She took Thomas's business card, then glanced at Daniel.

“Are you Mr. Mercer's husband?””

Daniel stiffened.

“I'm Daniel Mercer.””

Her face changed.

“Oh.””

The single syllable told him that she recognized his name.

“Is there a problem?”” he asked.

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

“I probably shouldn't say anything.””

“Then don't. Just give Dr. Whitmore our contact information.””

She nodded and placed the card beside her keyboard.

As Daniel turned to leave, she spoke again.

“Mr. Mercer?””

He stopped.

“Dr. Whitmore asked someone to retrieve an old file yesterday. He said it had been misfiled.””

Thomas turned sharply.

“What file?””

“I don't know. It was kept in the medical records archive. He seemed upset when the administrator told him it had already been transferred.””

Daniel and Thomas exchanged a glance.

“Transferred where?”” Thomas asked.

“The hospital's compliance office.””

Daniel thanked her.

Outside, Thomas called Officer Brooks and reported what the receptionist had said. He didn't accuse Whitmore of wrongdoing. He simply requested that the information be added to the investigation.

As they reached the car, Daniel's phone rang again.

An unknown number.

He answered.

“Mr. Mercer?”” a man's voice said.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Alan Whitmore.””

Daniel stopped beside the driver's door.

“Where are you?””

“I can't meet you at the hospital.””

“Why not?””

“Because someone has been watching my house.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Who?””

“I don't know. A black sedan has been parked across the street for two nights. This morning, someone left an envelope in my mailbox.””

“What was inside?””

“A photograph of my daughter.””

Daniel's anger gave way to a colder emotion.

Fear.

“Are you saying someone threatened your family?””

“I'm saying I need to talk to you before this gets worse.””

“Then tell me what you did to Grace's test.””

Whitmore fell silent.

When he spoke again, his voice was barely audible.

“I didn't falsify the original report.””

“Who did?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

“Because I signed the medical paperwork that allowed the sample to be collected, and I should have questioned who requested the additional analysis.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Who requested it?””

Whitmore took a shaky breath.

“Your wife.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The attorney's face had gone completely still.

Whitmore continued.

“Vanessa brought me documents claiming Grace had authorized a private genetic analysis. She said it was necessary to settle an inheritance dispute. I accepted the paperwork without properly verifying the authorization.””

“Did you collect Ethan's sample?””

“No. The sample was delivered to the laboratory by a courier.””

“Who sent it?””

“I don't know. But the accompanying paperwork listed Michael Mercer as a comparison subject.””

Daniel stared into the darkening parking lot.

“Did you know Grace was aware of the test?””

“No.””

“Did you know the results were inconclusive?””

“Yes.””

“Then how did a report appear claiming Michael was Ethan's father?””

Whitmore's breathing quickened.

“Because someone requested a second report using a different set of records. I didn't authorize it. I never saw the final document until a copy arrived at my office several months later.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

“I was afraid I'd lose my license. I made a serious mistake by failing to verify the authorization, and I was ashamed.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Dr. Whitmore, a child is being threatened because of this.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't. You don't know what my son has been told. You don't know what he thinks about himself.””

The doctor began to cry.

“I'm sorry.””

“Sorry isn't enough. Will you give a statement to the police?””

A long silence followed.

Then Whitmore said, “Yes.””

He gave Daniel an address and asked him to meet him there the following morning, provided the police approved the meeting.

Before ending the call, he added one final sentence.

“Mr. Mercer, there's something else. Grace came to see me two days before she died. She asked me to keep a copy of the original genetic report somewhere outside the hospital.””

Daniel felt his heart hammer.

“Why?””

“She said that if anything happened to her, someone might try to change the results.””

The line went quiet.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The attorney's expression had turned grim.

“Where did he keep the copy?”” Daniel asked.

Whitmore answered from the other end.

“In a sealed envelope.””

“Where is it now?””

May you like

The doctor swallowed.

“Someone took it from my office last night.””
