Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wore Another Name

The woman standing in the reception area looked nothing like the missing boy in the photograph.

She was in her early thirties, with dark hair pulled into a loose knot and a pale scar running from her left temple toward her eyebrow. Her gray coat was damp from the rain, and she held a battered leather handbag against her side as though she expected someone to snatch it away.

When Thomas approached, she looked at him without blinking.

“You took your time,” she said.

Thomas stopped several feet away.

“Adrian?””

The woman gave a humorless laugh.

“That's one of the names they gave me.””

Daniel came down the stairs behind Thomas.

The woman turned toward him.

Her eyes moved over his face, then toward the reception area, where Ethan and Sophie sat with the receptionist.

When she saw Ethan, something in her expression broke.

“Oh,” she whispered.

Daniel stepped in front of his son.

“Don't come any closer.””

The woman immediately stopped.

“I won't hurt him.””

“That's what everyone says before they explain why they want something from my children.””

She lowered her gaze.

“My name is Claire. I was born Laura's daughter. Michael was my father.””

Thomas went pale.

Daniel stared at her.

“Your father was Michael?””

“Yes.””

“But Thomas said Michael had a son named Adrian.””

“He did.””

Claire opened her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed a young girl sitting on a wooden staircase beside a boy with dark hair. The boy's face had the same narrow chin and distinctive crease beside his left eye that Daniel had noticed in the old photograph.

The girl wore a yellow sweater.

On the back, someone had written two names.

*Adrian and Claire.*

Thomas took the photograph with trembling fingers.

“Why did you use Adrian's name when you called downstairs?””

“Because I wanted to know whether you were still looking for him.””

“And are you?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“I've been looking for him for twenty years.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“Where is he?””

She looked at Ethan.

“I don't know.””

“Then why are you here?””

“Because someone sent me a message last night. They said the blue key had been found, and that Michael was going to take the boy.””

Daniel's hand tightened around Ethan's shoulder.

“Which boy?””

Claire looked directly at him.

“Your son.””

Ethan pressed closer to Daniel.

Claire immediately stepped backward.

“I'm sorry,” she said.

“I shouldn't have said it like that.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“You shouldn't have come here without explaining yourself.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

Claire glanced at Thomas.

“Not in the lobby.””

Thomas led them into a conference room and locked the door. Daniel kept Ethan and Sophie with him. He wasn't willing to leave them alone, even for a few minutes.

Claire sat opposite him, hands clasped so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

“I need you to understand that I don't know everything,” she began.

“I know what my mother told me before she disappeared. I know what I saw when I was a child. And I know that Michael spent years trying to find my brother.””

“Why did your mother disappear?”” Daniel asked.

“Because she discovered what my father had done.””

“What had he done?””

Claire swallowed.

“He had been moving money through shell companies connected to my grandfather's estate. When my mother confronted him, he told her that if she went to the police, Adrian would be taken away from her.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Was Adrian taken away?””

Claire nodded.

“I was nine. I remember my father coming home one night with two men. They packed Adrian's clothes into a suitcase.

My mother screamed at them to stop. My father told her that Adrian was going to live with relatives until things settled down.””

“What happened after that?””

“Adrian never came home.””

Daniel glanced at the photograph on the table.

“Did you report him missing?””

“My mother tried. But my father had legal custody. He showed the authorities paperwork claiming Adrian had been sent to another country. Every time she asked for proof, he told her to stop making trouble.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was a child.””

Claire's voice cracked.

“I believed whatever kept him from hurting my mother.””

The room fell silent.

Daniel recognized the look on her face.

It was the same look Ethan had worn when Vanessa told him to be quiet.

Fear disguised as obedience.

Claire continued.

“When I was thirteen, my mother left me with a family friend and told me she was going away for a few days. She never returned. I was told she had abandoned me. I spent years trying to find her, and when I finally found records suggesting she had died, I couldn't prove what had happened.””

“Why did you come looking for Grace?”” Thomas asked.

“Because Grace was the only person who ever believed my mother.””

Claire reached into her handbag and removed another envelope.

“Grace contacted me two months before she died. She told me she had discovered evidence that Adrian was still alive.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Did she say where he was?””

“No. She said she had found a record connecting him to a trust established by our grandfather. She wanted to compare it with the documents my mother had kept.””

Thomas took the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

The signature was Grace's.

Claire,

I believe your brother is alive. I also believe Michael has been using another identity to hide what happened to him.

If I can confirm what I suspect, I'll contact you again. Until then, do not approach Daniel or the children.

I am sorry I cannot explain more.

Grace.

Daniel read the note twice.

“Why did she tell you not to approach us?””

“Because she thought my father was watching her.””

“And did you listen?””

Claire looked down.

“No.””

Daniel waited.

She finally lifted her head.

“I came to your house once. Before Grace died. I wanted to warn her that Michael had found out about the trust. Vanessa was there.””

Thomas's face tightened.

“When?””

“About a month before Grace was hospitalized. I arrived while Grace was upstairs. Vanessa answered the door and told me Grace didn't want to see me.””

“Did you believe her?””

“No. But Vanessa said she would call the police if I refused to leave. She also told me that if I cared about Grace, I would stop dragging my family problems into her home.””

Daniel's jaw clenched.

“Why didn't you tell Grace?””

“I wrote her a letter. I never received a reply.””

“Do you have a copy?””

Claire nodded.

She pulled a folded sheet of paper from her handbag.

The handwriting was shaky, but the message was clear.

Grace,

Vanessa is working with Michael. I don't know how much she knows, but she asked me about the blue key. Please be careful.

If anything happens to you, look for the original birth record. It will prove that Adrian was never legally removed from the family trust.

Claire.

Thomas read the letter carefully.

“The original birth record,” he murmured.

“That's what Grace mentioned in the file.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Can that record tell us whether Ethan is my biological son?””

“No. It concerns Adrian's identity and inheritance. Someone is deliberately mixing two separate issues to frighten you.””

Claire nodded.

“That's what Michael does. He takes a small piece of truth and surrounds it with lies until nobody knows what to believe.””

Daniel looked toward his children.

Sophie had fallen asleep against his chest. Ethan sat beside him, watching Claire with cautious curiosity.

“Why does Michael want Ethan?”” Daniel asked.

Claire's face tightened.

“Because Ethan is the beneficiary of the trust. And because the trust contains a provision that could expose the fraud my father committed.””

Thomas opened the folder again.

“Your grandfather's estate was divided according to a set of conditions. If Michael was found to have misappropriated funds, his share could be forfeited. Grace believed the original records proved he had done exactly that.””

“And Ethan's inheritance?””

“Would remain protected.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Then why threaten a child? Why not challenge the trust in court?””

“Because Michael can't win in court if the evidence is genuine,” Thomas said.

“He needs the evidence to disappear, or he needs to convince the people holding it that the evidence means something else.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Vanessa was supposed to get the blue key. She told Michael she could gain your trust and access the documents without raising suspicion.””

Daniel felt sick.

“So our marriage was a plan?””

“I believe it began that way,” Claire said.

“I can't prove when Vanessa started caring about you, if she ever did. But she knew who you were before she married you.””

Daniel remembered their first meeting at a charity fundraiser. Vanessa had approached him after a speech about grief and family. She had mentioned that she'd lost her own father young, then listened with remarkable patience while he spoke about Grace.

At the time, her attention had felt like kindness.

Now he wondered whether she'd been studying him.

“How did she know I was vulnerable?”” he asked.

Claire looked away.

“Michael had people gathering information about you. He knew Grace had left you a letter. He knew she had placed the blue key somewhere in the house. He believed that if someone married you, they could eventually get access to it.””

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“And you knew this?””

“I suspected it. I didn't have proof.””

“You could have warned me.””

“I tried to warn Grace. I thought she would protect you.””

“She died.””

Claire's eyes filled.

“I know.””

For a moment, Daniel wanted to blame her for everything. He wanted someone in the room to be responsible for the years of deception, for Vanessa's cruelty, for the terror in his son's eyes.

But Claire looked like a woman who had spent half her life running from a man she feared.

She wasn't the person who had struck Ethan.

She wasn't the person who had hidden secrets in Daniel's home.

“Why come here now?”” he asked.

“Because Michael contacted me yesterday. He told me he had found Adrian.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“What did he say?””

“He said Adrian was living under another name. He said he could bring him home if I helped him retrieve the trust documents.””

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

Claire reached into her coat pocket and placed a small memory card on the table.

“But I recorded the call.””

Thomas stared at it.

“Does it contain his voice?””

“And Vanessa's.””

Daniel looked at the memory card.

For the first time since discovering the key, he felt they might have something concrete.

“Let's hear it.””

Thomas found a secure laptop and connected the card. A moment later, a recording began.

First came the sound of traffic.

Then a man's voice.

Older. Calm. Controlled.

“Vanessa, did you get the key?””

Vanessa answered, “Not yet. Daniel took the children before I could find out where Ethan hid it.””

“Then make him come back.””

“He doesn't trust me anymore.””

A short laugh.

“Then give him something he wants.””

“What?””

“The truth about his son.””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Are you sure Ethan isn't his?””

The man answered without hesitation.

“Daniel doesn't need to know the truth. He only needs to believe the lie long enough to give us the key.””

Daniel's stomach turned.

The recording continued.

Vanessa asked, “And what happens when I give it to you?””

“You'll get what I promised.””

“And the boy?””

A pause.

Then the man spoke.

“The boy belongs with his real family.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan was staring at Daniel.

“Dad,” he whispered, “is that man going to take me away?””

Daniel pulled him close.

“No one is taking you anywhere.””

But as he said it, Thomas's phone rang.

The attorney listened for a few seconds, then looked at Daniel with an expression of pure alarm.

“What is it?”” Daniel demanded.

Thomas covered the receiver.

“The police have just searched your house.””

Daniel stood.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa reported that you abducted the children and stole documents belonging to her.””

Daniel stared at him.

Then Thomas added the words that made his blood run cold.

“She also claims she has proof that you're not Ethan's biological father.””
