Chapter 6: The Evidence That Turned Everyone Against Me
By noon, Daniel's face was on the local news.
The headline appeared beneath a photograph taken outside his office building.
*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN ACCUSED OF TAKING CHILDREN AFTER DOMESTIC DISPUTE*
The article contained Vanessa's version of events.
According to her statement, Daniel had returned home unexpectedly, assaulted her verbally, taken the children without permission, and removed confidential family documents. She claimed she had been afraid for her own safety and had attempted to contact him repeatedly.
There was no mention of the strap.
No mention of Ethan's bruised arm.
No mention of Sophie hiding beneath the coffee table.
Instead, the article described Vanessa as a devoted stepmother who had been suddenly abandoned by a volatile husband.
Daniel read the story in Thomas's conference room, his jaw tightening with every paragraph.
“She makes it sound like I kidnapped my own children.””
Thomas sat across from him.
“Don't respond publicly. Anything you say can be taken out of context. Let the police investigate the actual incident.””
“She knows what she's doing.””
“Yes.””
“And she knows people will believe her.””
Thomas didn't disagree.
Daniel looked toward the children. Ethan was sitting beside Claire, quietly drawing on a notepad while Sophie played with a set of wooden blocks.
He was grateful they were occupied.
He didn't want them to hear strangers debating whether their father was dangerous.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
*You could have come home. You could have talked to me. Instead, you made me do this.*
Daniel stared at the words.
Then another message arrived.
*Bring me the key, and I'll tell the police you were upset and confused. We can still fix this.*
Daniel took screenshots and forwarded them to the officer handling the case.
He didn't reply.
Ten minutes later, two uniformed officers arrived at Thomas's office. They spoke with Daniel privately, asked about the previous night's incident, and requested copies of the threatening messages.
One officer, a woman named Officer Brooks, reviewed the photographs of Ethan's injury and the clinic's preliminary documentation.
“Mr. Mercer,” she said, “we're investigating the allegations made by both parties. At this point, I can't promise you what the outcome will be. I can tell you that the children's safety is our immediate concern.””
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.””
“We'll need to speak with Ethan in an appropriate setting. He won't be forced to answer questions he's uncomfortable with, and we'll follow the required procedures.””
“Can I be present?””
“We'll explain the process before anything happens. For now, keep the children somewhere stable and make sure any contact with Vanessa is documented.””
Daniel gave her the address of the hotel and the contact information for the clinic.
Before leaving, Officer Brooks glanced at the old photograph of Grace and the boy.
“Is this connected to the allegations?””
“We believe it is.””
She examined the image.
“Then preserve the original. Don't alter it, and don't share it publicly.””
After the officers left, Daniel felt the exhaustion settle over him.
Every conversation seemed to open another door.
Behind every door was another lie.
Claire approached him with a cup of water.
“You need to eat something,” she said.
“I'm fine.””
“You sound exactly like my brother.””
Daniel gave her a tired look.
“Which brother?””
She smiled faintly.
“Adrian. He always said he was fine when he was terrified.””
Daniel took the water.
“Did you love him?””
Claire sat beside him.
“He was my big brother. He used to sleep outside my bedroom when our father was angry. He said if Dad wanted to hurt me, he'd have to go through him first.””
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
The boy had placed himself between Sophie and the conference room door without seeming to realize it.
“He does the same thing,” Daniel said quietly.
“He thinks it's his job to protect her.””
Claire followed his gaze.
“Then you need to make sure he understands that he's allowed to be a child.””
Daniel nodded.
He had heard those words before, but they meant something different now.
That afternoon, Thomas arranged a meeting with the financial institution holding Grace's trust.
The meeting took place in a secure office with a compliance officer named Ms. Patel, who reviewed the documents and verified the blue key's identifying marks.
She didn't touch the key until Daniel gave permission.
“This key corresponds to the lockbox described in the trust records,” she said.
“However, possession of the key alone does not grant access to the financial accounts or authorize any changes to the beneficiaries.””
“So Vanessa couldn't simply open the box and take the money?””
“No. But she might have been looking for documents that could help someone attempt fraud or challenge the trust.””
Thomas placed Grace's letter on the desk.
Ms. Patel read it carefully.
“This is consistent with the safeguards recorded in our system. Before we proceed, I need to ask whether anyone has attempted to impersonate you or request information about Ethan's trust.””
Daniel thought about Vanessa's questions over the past several months.
The shared account proposal.
The request to update his personal information.
The conversation about consolidating his investments.
“Yes,” he said.
“My wife asked me to provide financial documents. I don't know whether those requests were connected to the trust.””
“Did you provide them?””
“Some household statements. Nothing directly related to Ethan's inheritance, as far as I know.””
Ms. Patel made a note.
“We'll flag the account for enhanced verification and notify the appropriate security team. Any attempted access will require additional review.””
Daniel exhaled slowly.
At least one part of his son's future was protected.
But the lockbox still remained unopened.
And whatever Grace had hidden inside it might be the only way to understand why Michael had been threatening them.
Ms. Patel reviewed the authorization documents, then contacted a records custodian who could supervise the opening of the box.
They scheduled the process for the following morning.
As Daniel gathered his papers, Thomas pulled him aside.
“There is something else you need to prepare for.””
Daniel rubbed his eyes.
“Another secret?””
“Possibly. The paternity allegation may be based on a real medical record, even if Vanessa is misrepresenting it.””
“Can she force me to take a DNA test?””
“That's a question for a family-law attorney and the court, depending on the circumstances. Don't agree to anything under pressure. More importantly, don't let this become a reason to doubt Ethan or make him feel responsible for proving his place in your family.””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Ethan was showing Sophie how to draw a dinosaur.
“I won't.””
Thomas nodded.
“Then we'll handle the evidence carefully.””
Daniel's phone rang again.
This time, the caller was his company's chief operating officer.
“Daniel, I need you to come into the office,” Richard said.
“Why?””
“The board has seen the news report. Some investors are asking questions, and the board wants you to take temporary leave while the situation is reviewed.””
Daniel stared at the wall.
“You're suspending me?””
“It's not a disciplinary action. It's a precaution.””
“A precaution against what?””
“Against the company becoming involved in a personal dispute.””
Daniel let out a short, bitter laugh.
“My wife has accused me of kidnapping my own children. Now I'm being punished because strangers believe her?””
“I'm trying to protect the business.””
“Then protect it by telling the truth.””
Richard sighed.
“I can't do that until we know more.””
Daniel ended the call.
He had spent fifteen years building his company. He had worked through weekends, missed vacations, and answered emails from hospital waiting rooms. He had believed his career was the one part of his life he could control.
Now Vanessa had reached into that life too.
He sat down heavily.
For the first time, the full cost of the situation became clear.
He could lose his reputation.
He could lose his job.
He could be dragged into a legal battle over his own children.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, Ethan was still asking whether he was really his father's son.
That evening, Daniel took the children to a quiet rental apartment arranged through a family friend. He changed the locks on the reservation, asked the property manager not to disclose their location, and kept his phone available for the police.
Claire remained with them while Thomas worked on the legal documents.
Daniel sat at the kitchen table with Ethan.
“Can I ask you something?”” Ethan said.
“Anything.””
“Are you going to send me away?””
Daniel put down his cup.
“No.””
“Even if Vanessa says I'm not yours?””
Daniel reached across the table.
“Ethan, listen to me. You don't have to prove anything to deserve my love. You don't have to be perfect, and you don't have to protect me from bad news. You're my son because I love you and because I've been your dad every day of your life.””
Ethan's eyes filled.
“But what if the test says—”
“Whatever a test says, it cannot erase the life we've shared. It cannot erase the nights I held you when you were sick, or the way you used to fall asleep on my shoulder when you were little. It cannot erase the fact that you are my child.””
Ethan began to cry.
Daniel moved around the table and held him.
“I should have noticed you were afraid,” Daniel whispered.
“I should have asked more questions.””
“You were busy.””
“That doesn't make it your fault.””
Ethan clung to him.
After a while, he pulled away and wiped his face.
“Can Sophie sleep with us tonight?””
“Of course.””
They made a bed on the living-room floor with blankets and pillows. Sophie insisted that the stuffed rabbit sleep between her and Ethan.
For the first time since the incident, the children fell asleep without watching the door.
Daniel sat beside them until midnight.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*Vanessa isn't the only one who knows the truth. Ask Grace's doctor about the last test she ordered before she died.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
He immediately forwarded the message to Officer Brooks.
Then he called Thomas.
The attorney answered on the first ring.
“Daniel?””
“Someone says Grace ordered a test before she died.””
Thomas was silent.
“Do you know anything about that?””
“I know she requested copies of her medical records. I don't know whether she ordered a specific test.””
“Could it have been a paternity test?””
“It's possible. But we shouldn't assume that.””
Daniel looked at the children sleeping on the floor.
“Who would know?””
“Her doctor. The hospital records department. Possibly the laboratory that handled her tests.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Then I'm going to find out.””
The next morning, Thomas accompanied Daniel to the hospital where Grace had died.
They met with the medical records administrator, who explained that certain records could only be released through the appropriate legal process. Daniel provided the required documentation and asked whether there was any record of a genetic test ordered before Grace's death.
The administrator searched the system.
After several minutes, she frowned.
“There is a reference to a laboratory consultation,” she said.
“But the actual report isn't in the standard medical file.””
“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.
“It may have been filed separately. I'll need to check with the laboratory archive.””
She left the room.
Daniel stared at the empty doorway.
Thomas sat beside him.
“Whatever we find, don't let Vanessa decide what it means before we've read it.””
Daniel nodded.
The administrator returned carrying a thin envelope.
“Mr. Mercer, we located a report that appears to match your request. I can't interpret the medical findings for you, but I can explain what the document is.””
She placed it on the desk.
The heading read:
*CONFIDENTIAL GENETIC ANALYSIS — FAMILY RELATIONSHIP REVIEW*
Daniel's hands trembled as he opened it.
The first page contained Grace's name.
The second contained his.
The third contained the name of a person he had never seen before.
*Michael Mercer.*
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“Why would my wife's brother-in-law be part of a genetic test involving our family?””
Thomas's expression had gone rigid.
“Read the conclusion.””
Daniel forced his eyes down the page.
The report stated that the samples were insufficient to establish a definitive parent-child relationship between Daniel and Ethan. It also noted that the available markers suggested a possible close biological relationship between Ethan and an unidentified male relative of Grace.
The results were inconclusive.
They did not prove Daniel wasn't Ethan's biological father.
But they didn't explain why Michael's name appeared in the file.
Daniel turned to the final page.
There, beneath the laboratory's conclusion, was a handwritten note in Grace's handwriting.
*If Michael's sample was used, someone has altered the chain of custody. This result cannot be trusted until the original samples are verified.*
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Grace had known something was wrong.
She had ordered the test herself.
And she had left a warning that the result might have been manipulated.
Thomas took the report and studied it carefully.
“This changes the investigation,” he said.
“But it doesn't establish paternity, and it certainly doesn't prove that Michael is Ethan's father.””
Daniel nodded, barely hearing him.
At the bottom of the page was a date.
Three days before Grace was admitted to the hospital.
He remembered those days.
Grace had been exhausted, but she had insisted she was fine. She had kissed Ethan goodnight, asked Daniel to make sure Sophie kept her favorite blanket, and told him she wanted to organize some family photographs.
He had thought she was preparing for a difficult week at work.
Now he wondered whether she had been trying to protect their children.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
*You found the report, didn't you?*
Daniel stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
*Now you understand why Grace never told you the truth.*
Then a photograph arrived.
It showed a document Daniel had never seen before.
At the top was the name of a private laboratory.
Beneath it was a genetic relationship chart.
And beside the words *BIOLOGICAL FATHER*, someone had typed a name.
*Michael Mercer.*
Daniel's fingers went numb.
Thomas leaned over his shoulder.
“That's not the report we just read.””
“No.””
“It's been altered.””
Daniel enlarged the photograph.
At the bottom, beneath the laboratory's logo, was a signature.
The same signature that appeared on the original report.
But the date was different.
This document had been created six months after Grace died.
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“Someone manufactured this.””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“And whoever did it wants you to believe that Ethan is Michael's son.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
Then he noticed something in the background.
A reflection in the glass behind the document.
A man's hand.
A gold signet ring.
Thomas went completely still.
Daniel recognized the ring from the old photograph of Grace and the boy.
The ring belonged to Michael.
May you like
And written in the message beneath the photograph were six words that made Daniel's heart stop.
*Ask your wife who paid the doctor.*
