Amused

Chapter 7: The Daughter No One Was Supposed to Find

Ethan read the note a third time, hoping the words would somehow rearrange themselves into something less impossible.

Victoria Hayes is the daughter of the woman in this picture. She's the daughter of Grant Whitmore.

And she doesn't know who her real father is.

For several seconds, the conference room seemed to lose all its sound.

Thomas was still speaking to the security team. Daniel was pacing beside the window. Michael had begun making calls, and Evelyn Shaw was studying the photograph with an expression Ethan couldn't quite interpret.

But Ethan heard none of them.

Victoria was Grant Whitmore's daughter.

The man who had allegedly paid her to marry Ethan was not simply a business rival manipulating a convenient stranger.

He might be her father.

And if Victoria genuinely didn't know that, then someone had built an elaborate scheme around a woman who believed she was making a calculated choice for her own benefit.

Ethan lowered the photograph.

"Michael, who is the woman standing beside my father?""

Michael adjusted his glasses.

"I don't recognize her.""

Evelyn took the photograph and examined it more closely.

"May I see the pendant?""

Ethan pointed to the silver emerald hanging around the woman's neck.

Evelyn went very still.

"I've seen this design before.""

"Where?""

"Your mother's personal jewelry collection. She owned a pendant made by the same jeweler. It was commissioned as part of a set, though I was under the impression the second piece had been lost.""

Ethan reached into his jacket and removed the velvet box.

He opened it.

The restored emerald necklace glimmered beneath the conference room lights.

Evelyn looked from the necklace to the photograph.

"Good heavens.""

Daniel stopped pacing.

"What?""

Evelyn carefully placed the photograph beside the box.

"The pendant in the photograph isn't merely similar. It's the matching piece from the same collection.""

Ethan stared at the emeralds.

His mother had owned the necklace for decades. He remembered seeing her wear it at formal dinners, charity events, and family celebrations.

After her death, the necklace had been placed in a secure vault. Ethan had arranged for its restoration because he wanted Victoria to have something meaningful from the woman he had loved most in the world.

Now he was looking at a photograph suggesting that the necklace's matching piece had belonged to a woman connected to Grant Whitmore.

"Why would my mother have jewelry that matched hers?"" Ethan asked.

Evelyn shook her head.

"I don't know. But your mother kept detailed records of the collection. If the second piece was given away, sold, or transferred, there should be documentation.""

Michael opened his briefcase.

"Richard's letter mentioned that he knew more about Grant's methods than he had told Ethan. We may be looking at the reason.""

Ethan turned toward him.

"You think my father knew about the woman?""

"I think we need to establish the facts before we draw conclusions.""

A knock interrupted them.

Thomas opened the door, spoke quietly with someone outside, then returned.

"Mr. Carter, the authorities have received the security footage. They're looking for Marcus Reed and Grant Whitmore.""

"Any word on Grant?""

"His driver says he left the hotel shortly before noon. His destination is unknown.""

Ethan nodded.

"Keep the original recordings secure. Nobody accesses them without a documented request.""

Thomas left.

Ethan placed the photograph on the table.

"Someone wanted me to find this today. Why?""

Daniel folded his arms.

"Because whoever sent it knew about the wedding, the money, and the connection between Victoria and Grant. They may be trying to turn us against each other.""

"Or they're trying to tell me something Grant has spent years hiding," Ethan replied.

Evelyn studied the handwriting on the note.

"This was typed. There are no fingerprints we can reliably identify from the envelope without a proper examination. But the person who sent it knew exactly where to deliver it.""

"Someone inside the hotel," Daniel said.

"Possibly.""

Ethan looked toward the door.

Victoria was still in the bridal suite, surrounded by the wreckage of the ceremony she had expected to control.

He could have left her there.

He could have allowed the authorities to question her later and concentrated on protecting the company.

But if she truly didn't know Grant was her father, then the photograph changed something important.

It didn't erase what she had done.

It didn't excuse the plan to exploit his trust.

But it raised a question Ethan couldn't ignore.

Had Grant chosen Victoria because she was willing to betray him?

Or had he spent years preparing his own daughter to do it?

"I'm going to speak with her," Ethan said.

Michael immediately shook his head.

"Not without counsel present.""

"Then you'll come with me.""

"I will. But understand that anything she says may become relevant to the investigation. We need to avoid making accusations we cannot support.""

Ethan closed the velvet box.

"Agreed.""

He took the photograph and the note, then walked toward the bridal suite with Michael beside him.

Two security officers stood outside the door.

"Is Ms. Hayes inside?"" Ethan asked.

"Yes, sir. She's requested privacy, but she hasn't left.""

"Please tell her I need to speak with her.""

One officer knocked.

A moment later, the door opened.

Victoria stood on the other side wearing the wedding gown that had once represented everything she claimed to want.

Her tiara was gone. Her makeup had begun to fade around her eyes, and her bouquet lay discarded on a dressing table.

When she saw Ethan, her expression hardened.

"If you've come to tell me the wedding is canceled, I already know.""

"The wedding never took place.""

She flinched.

"Do you really need to keep reminding me?""

"No. But I need you to answer some questions.""

Victoria glanced at Michael.

"Am I being interrogated?""

"No," Michael replied.

"But I am here as Ethan's attorney, and I advise you to be truthful.""

She stepped aside.

"Fine.""

Ethan entered the room.

For a moment, he remembered how happy he had been when he first saw the dress hanging by the window. Victoria had sent him a photograph of it months earlier, laughing because she couldn't decide whether the train was too long.

He had told her that she could wear whatever made her happy.

She had replied that she wanted to look like a princess.

He had thought she meant she wanted to feel beautiful.

Now he wondered whether she had meant something else entirely.

Ethan placed the photograph on the dressing table.

"Do you recognize this woman?""

Victoria glanced down.

Her face changed.

Not dramatically. Not enough to convince someone who wasn't watching carefully.

But Ethan saw it.

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"Where did you get this?""

"Answer the question.""

"I've never seen her before.""

"Look again.""

Victoria stared at the photograph.

"I said I don't know her.""

Ethan placed the necklace box beside it and opened the lid.

The emeralds caught the light.

Victoria looked at them, then back at the photograph.

"That necklace was your mother's.""

"Yes.""

"The woman is wearing something similar.""

"It's the matching piece from the same collection.""

Victoria stepped backward.

"Why are you showing me this?""

"Because someone left a message claiming you're Grant Whitmore's daughter.""

The room went utterly still.

Victoria stared at him.

Then she laughed once, a short, disbelieving sound.

"That's insane.""

"Is it?""

"Grant Whitmore isn't my father. My father died when I was a child.""

"What was his name?""

"Robert Hayes.""

"Do you have a birth certificate?""

Victoria's expression sharpened.

"Of course I do.""

"Have you ever seen it?""

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Ethan watched the realization move across her face.

"My mother handled all the family documents," she said finally.

"I never had a reason to question them.""

"Where is your mother now?""

"She died when I was twenty.""

"Did she ever tell you anything about Grant Whitmore?""

"No.""

"Did she know my mother?""

Victoria looked down at the photograph.

"I don't know.""

Her voice had become smaller.

For the first time since Ethan had known her, she seemed genuinely lost.

Michael stepped forward.

"Ms. Hayes, did Grant Whitmore ever approach you before you began dating Ethan?""

Victoria shook her head slowly.

"Not that I remember.""

"Did he ever discuss your family history?""

"No. He said he knew people who could help me build a business. He offered to introduce me to investors.""

"Did he ask you to obtain information about Ethan's finances?""

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

"Did you agree?""

She lowered her head.

"Yes.""

Michael made a brief note.

Ethan remained silent.

Victoria wiped her face.

"I know what I did. I know I lied to you. But I swear I never knew he was connected to my family.""

Ethan looked at the photograph.

"That may be true. It doesn't change what you chose to do.""

"I know.""

"Then tell me everything about your first meeting with Grant.""

Victoria sat on the edge of a chair.

"Madison introduced us. She said he was interested in funding a business venture. At first, we discussed restaurants and real estate. Then he started asking about you.""

"What did he ask?""

"Whether you trusted me. Whether you talked about your family. Whether you had plans to change the company's leadership. Whether you intended to transfer any assets after the wedding.""

Ethan felt his jaw tighten.

"And you answered him.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Victoria looked at him.

"Because I wanted the money.""

The honesty was brutal.

She continued before he could respond.

"I grew up watching my mother work herself sick to pay bills. We never had enough. When she died, I discovered that most of what she had saved went toward medical expenses. I promised myself I would never be powerless again.""

Ethan listened without interrupting.

"Grant offered me a way out," she said.

"He told me I was smart enough to secure my future. He said you would never notice what I was doing because you were too busy trusting people.""

"And you believed him.""

"Yes.""

"Did you ever consider that I might have loved you?""

Victoria began to cry.

"I did.""

"Then why wasn't that enough?""

She looked away.

"Because love doesn't pay for security.""

Ethan felt a deep, weary sadness settle over him.

"No," he said quietly.

"But neither does betrayal.""

Victoria covered her face.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was her uneven breathing.

Then she lowered her hands.

"If Grant really is my father, why would he do this to me?""

Ethan had no answer.

Michael closed his notebook.

"We need to verify the claim. Until then, you should not contact Grant or anyone associated with him. If you receive messages, preserve them and inform your attorney.""

Victoria nodded faintly.

Ethan picked up the photograph.

He had come into the room expecting another lie.

Instead, he had discovered a possibility that was almost worse: Victoria might have been willing to destroy him without knowing that the man directing her was her own father.

He moved toward the door.

"Ethan," Victoria called.

He stopped but didn't turn.

"Do you hate me?""

He considered the question.

A few hours earlier, he would have said he couldn't imagine hating her.

Now he wasn't sure what he felt.

"I don't want to hate you," he replied.

"But I won't protect you from the consequences of your choices.""

She began crying again.

He left without looking back.

Outside, Daniel was waiting.

"Any answers?""

"More questions.""

Daniel glanced at the photograph.

"What's that?""

Ethan showed him.

Daniel studied it, then looked toward the bridal suite.

"Do you believe it?""

"I believe someone wants me to investigate it.""

"That's not the same thing.""

"No. It isn't.""

They walked toward the private elevator.

Halfway down the corridor, Ethan's phone rang.

The caller was Evelyn Shaw.

He answered.

"Evelyn?""

"I've found the jewelry records," she said.

"Your mother purchased the necklace and pendant as a matched set in 1994. But the pendant wasn't lost.""

"Where did it go?""

There was a pause.

"Your mother gave it to a woman named Catherine Whitmore.""

Ethan stopped walking.

"Grant's wife?""

"No. His wife was named Margaret. Catherine was someone else entirely.""

"Who was she?""

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"Your father's sister.""

Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.

Richard Carter had been an only child.

At least, that was what Ethan had always been told.

Evelyn continued.

"Your father had a sister who was adopted as an infant. The family never discussed her because the circumstances were complicated. Her name was Catherine Carter before she changed it.""

Ethan gripped the phone.

"Are you saying Victoria and I might be related?""

"No," Evelyn replied quickly.

"We have no evidence of that. But we need to establish Catherine's identity and determine whether the woman in the photograph is connected to her.""

Ethan stared at Daniel.

His father's sister.

A woman who had vanished from the family history.

A pendant matching the necklace his mother had left behind.

And a note claiming Victoria was Grant Whitmore's daughter.

Nothing made sense.

Then Evelyn spoke again.

"Ethan, there's something else. I found a letter from your mother to Catherine. It was dated two months before Catherine disappeared.""

"What did it say?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"Your mother wrote that Catherine had discovered a secret about Grant Whitmore and that she was afraid for her unborn child.""

Ethan's hand tightened around the phone.

"An unborn child?""

"Yes.""

"Do we know what happened to the baby?""

Evelyn's voice became almost a whisper.

"According to the letter, Catherine gave birth to a daughter.""

Ethan closed his eyes.

He already knew the name that would come next.

Victoria Hayes.

But before Evelyn could say it, another voice came through the phone.

A man's voice.

Cold. Familiar.

"Tell Ethan the rest, Evelyn.""

Ethan froze.

Grant Whitmore.

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

"How did you get this number?""

Grant ignored her.

"Ethan, if you want to know why your father hid his sister from you, meet me tonight. Come alone.""

"Where?""

"At the old Carter estate.""

Ethan's stomach tightened.

The estate had been sold after his father's death. The main house stood empty while developers argued over its future.

Grant continued.

"Bring the photograph. Bring the necklace. And don't tell Victoria.""

"Why?""

Grant laughed softly.

"Because the truth about her mother is going to hurt you both.""

The call ended.

Ethan lowered his phone.

Daniel stared at him.

"What did he say?""

Ethan looked toward the elevator doors.

"Grant wants to meet.""

"Absolutely not.""

"He says he has information about my father's sister.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"And you think he'll tell you the truth?""

"No.""

May you like

Ethan slipped the phone into his pocket.

"But I think he's afraid I'll find it without him.""
