Amused

Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Warning

Ethan read the message twice.

The words remained unchanged.

Cancel the wedding before she gets what she came for.

He looked at Daniel.

“Who sent this?””

Daniel tapped the notification.

“It came through the venue’s security portal. No sender name. Just a masked account.””

“Can you trace it?””

“I can try. But whoever accessed the system used your credentials. That means either someone has your password or someone inside the company has access to your account.””

Ethan felt a cold pressure settle behind his ribs.

Victoria had talked about six months. She had talked about manipulating the prenup. She had talked about his reputation as though she had already calculated how much humiliation he would tolerate.

But the message suggested something else.

Someone had been watching her, too.

“Get the attorney here,” Ethan said.

“And tell the venue manager to preserve every recording from this hallway. No deletions. No exceptions.””

Daniel nodded and moved away to make the call.

Ethan continued toward the private lounge reserved for the wedding party. He needed somewhere quiet to think, away from the guests who would soon begin asking why the groom looked as though he had attended a funeral instead of his own wedding.

The lounge door stood ajar.

Inside, sunlight fell across a polished mahogany table. A tray of untouched champagne glasses sat beside a bouquet of white lilies. On the sofa, Ethan’s younger sister, Olivia, was scrolling through her phone in a pale blue dress.

She looked up as he entered.

“There you are! I was beginning to think you’d run away.””

Then she saw his face.

Her smile faded.

“Ethan?””

He closed the door behind him.

“Olivia, I need you to answer something honestly.””

She put down her phone.

“Of course.””

“Do you trust Victoria?””

Olivia stared at him.

“What kind of question is that?””

“A simple one.””

She hesitated for a moment too long.

Ethan noticed.

“Olivia.””

She stood, smoothing the front of her dress.

“I trust that you love her.””

“That isn’t what I asked.””

His sister looked toward the window.

“No,” she admitted.

“Not completely.””

Ethan felt another piece of his carefully constructed world shift.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I raised a concern, you told me I was being unfair.”” Olivia’s voice trembled, but she held his gaze.

“Remember the dinner at your apartment when she joked about how much your mother’s jewelry collection was worth?””

“She said she was impressed by the craftsmanship.””

“She asked me whether your mother had left everything to you or whether some pieces had been placed in a family trust.””

Ethan remembered the conversation. Victoria had been sitting beside him, her fingers resting on his arm, asking questions in a tone that sounded almost academic.

He had thought she was interested in his family history.

Olivia folded her arms.

“And when I told you that question made me uncomfortable, you said Victoria was trying to understand your world.””

Ethan swallowed.

“What else?””

“Three weeks ago, I saw her talking to a man outside your office. When I walked over, they stopped speaking. She introduced him as an old family friend, but he looked at her as if he expected her to give him something.””

“Did you get his name?””

“No. I asked her about him later, and she said I was imagining things.”” Olivia paused.

“Then she cried.””

Ethan looked down at the table.

Of course she had.

Victoria’s tears had become a language he understood too well. Whenever he questioned something, she cried. Whenever he tried to establish a boundary, she told him he was treating her like a suspect.

And he had spent months apologizing for making the woman he loved feel unwanted.

Olivia stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Ethan raised his eyes.

“I heard her talking to Madison in the dressing room.””

Olivia went very still.

“What did she say?””

“That she only wants my money. That she plans to leave after six months. That she’s already spoken to a divorce attorney.””

Olivia’s hand flew to her mouth.

“Oh, Ethan.””

“She said I was an idiot.””

His sister crossed the room and wrapped her arms around him.

For the first time that afternoon, Ethan allowed himself to feel the full weight of what had happened. His shoulders sagged. His eyes burned, but he refused to let the tears fall.

Olivia held him tighter.

“You don’t have to marry her,” she whispered.

“I know.””

“Then don’t.””

He closed his eyes.

“It’s not that simple anymore.””

“Why? Because there are two hundred guests downstairs? Because a magazine is waiting to photograph you? Because she’ll tell everyone you abandoned her?””

Ethan pulled back.

“Because I don’t know how much she’s already done.””

Olivia’s expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

He showed her the anonymous message and explained the suspicious access to the security footage.

When he finished, Olivia looked genuinely frightened.

“Someone knew she was planning this.””

“Someone knew enough to warn me.””

“Could it be Madison?””

“Maybe.””

Olivia shook her head.

“I’ve never met Madison. Victoria says they’ve been friends since college, but I don’t even know where she lives.””

Ethan’s phone vibrated.

His attorney, Michael Reeves, was calling.

He answered immediately.

“Michael, I need you at the venue. Now.””

“What happened?””

“I need you to review the final prenuptial agreement and tell me exactly what I’m exposed to if this marriage goes forward.””

There was a brief silence.

“Ethan, is this about Victoria?””

“Yes.””

“Have you discovered something?””

Ethan looked at his sister.

“I’ve discovered enough to know I need the truth.””

Michael lowered his voice.

“I’m leaving my office now. But there’s something you should know. The last revision to your agreement was not made by my team.””

Ethan’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“Three days ago, I received a document that appeared to contain your requested amendments. I rejected it because the digital signature didn’t match our records. I assumed someone had made an administrative mistake.””

“Did you tell anyone?””

“No. I planned to discuss it with you at our scheduled review. But when I called your assistant, he said you’d personally approved the changes.””

“I approved no changes three days ago.””

Michael exhaled sharply.

“Then someone has been impersonating you.””

The room seemed to shrink around Ethan.

“Send me the document,” he said.

“I’m forwarding it now. Don’t sign anything else until I arrive.””

The call ended.

A second later, an email appeared.

Ethan opened the attachment.

The document looked legitimate at first glance. It carried his name, the company’s legal identifiers, and the signature of the attorney who had prepared the original agreement.

But buried in the revised clauses was a provision that made Ethan’s stomach turn.

If the marriage ended within the first year, Victoria would receive a substantial cash settlement, regardless of the circumstances of the divorce.

The figure was enormous.

Worse, another clause appeared to give her temporary authority over a private family investment account if Ethan became incapacitated or was deemed unable to manage his financial affairs.

Ethan stared at the page.

“Can she actually get this?”” Olivia asked.

“Not if Michael rejected it.””

“But someone wanted it in the final agreement.””

“Yes.””

He enlarged the document on his phone.

There, near the bottom, was a digital signature bearing his name.

It looked convincing.

It was also fraudulent.

Ethan forwarded the document to Michael with a single message.

Preserve the original. Identify every person who accessed this file.

Then he looked at Olivia.

“Who has access to my personal credentials?””

“Your assistant. Your executive security team. Michael’s office, probably. And Victoria, if you ever logged into your accounts while she was around.””

Ethan thought back over the past few months.

Victoria had used his laptop at their apartment. She had asked him to help her access a travel booking site while he was logged into his business email. Once, she had borrowed his phone to look at a photograph, then held it for several minutes after he turned away.

He had never thought to question it.

Why would he?

He had loved her.

A knock sounded at the lounge door.

Daniel entered, his expression grim.

“The venue manager is here.””

“Bring him in.””

A nervous man in a charcoal suit stepped inside, clutching a tablet.

“Mr. Carter, I’m terribly sorry about the security issue. We’re investigating it now.””

Ethan stood.

“Someone accessed footage from my wedding venue using my credentials. Someone sent me an anonymous warning. I want to know who.””

The manager swallowed.

“We’ve identified the terminal used to access the recording.””

“And?””

“It was accessed from the bridal suite.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Victoria’s room?””

“Yes, sir.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“Are you saying someone inside the bridal suite watched the footage?””

The manager nodded reluctantly.

“The terminal was accessed at 11:42 a.m. The footage request was submitted under your credentials, but the device itself was registered to the suite’s guest network.””

Ethan glanced at Daniel.

“Who was in the suite at that time?””

The manager consulted his tablet.

“According to the room access log, Ms. Hayes, her maid of honor, and one member of the wedding styling team.””

“Names,” Ethan said.

The manager read them out.

Victoria Hayes.

Madison Cole.

And a stylist named Rachel Bennett.

Ethan didn’t recognize Rachel’s name.

But Madison’s name stayed with him.

The woman on the phone.

The woman who had questioned Victoria’s plan.

The woman who might have been the only person in the room who knew exactly what Victoria intended to do.

“Can you bring Madison here?”” Ethan asked.

The manager hesitated.

“She’s currently with the bride.””

“Then ask her to come alone.””

“And if she refuses?””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Tell her Ethan Carter needs to ask her a question about the wedding security system.””

The manager hurried out.

Daniel leaned against the table.

“What if Madison is involved?””

“Then I’ll know.””

“And if she isn’t?””

“Then she might be the only person who can explain why someone accessed the footage before I heard Victoria talking.””

Olivia looked toward the door.

“What are you going to do when she gets here?””

Ethan pulled the velvet box from his pocket and placed it on the table.

“I’m going to ask her what she knows.””

A minute passed.

Then another.

The orchestra began playing downstairs, signaling that the ceremony was approaching.

Finally, the door opened.

Madison Cole stepped into the lounge wearing a fitted champagne-colored dress, her dark hair pinned into an elegant knot. Her eyes moved from Ethan to Olivia, then to Daniel.

She looked as though she had been expecting this conversation.

“Mr. Carter,” she said quietly.

Ethan gestured toward the chair opposite him.

“Please sit down.””

Madison remained standing.

“Before I do, there’s something you need to understand.””

“What’s that?””

She reached into her clutch and removed a small silver flash drive.

“Victoria isn’t the only person who knows about the six-month plan.””

Ethan felt his heartbeat quicken.

May you like

Madison placed the drive on the table.

“And she isn’t the person who came up with it.””
