Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden on the Flash Drive

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The silver flash drive sat between Ethan and Madison like a loaded weapon.

Daniel was the first to speak.

“What do you mean, Victoria didn’t come up with the plan?””

Madison glanced toward the closed door.

“I mean exactly what I said.””

Ethan pulled out the chair opposite him.

“Sit down, Madison.””

This time, she obeyed.

Her hands were trembling. She clasped them together in her lap, pressing her fingernails into her skin.

“Victoria told me she was going to marry you for your money,” she began.

“She told me about the six-month plan. She told me she’d spoken to a divorce attorney. But she didn’t tell me everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

Madison swallowed.

“Three months ago, Victoria introduced me to a man named Grant Whitmore.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Grant Whitmore was a familiar name. He was a private investor who had attempted to acquire a controlling stake in Carter Industries the previous year. Ethan’s father had rejected his offer, describing Whitmore as a man who treated every business relationship like a battlefield.

After his father’s death, Whitmore had approached Ethan twice.

Both times, Ethan had refused to sell.

“What does Grant Whitmore have to do with Victoria?””

Madison looked down at the flash drive.

“Everything.””

Olivia pulled out a chair and sat beside her brother.

“Start from the beginning,” she said.

“And don’t leave anything out.””

Madison took a shaky breath.

“Victoria met Grant at a private party last winter. He knew she was dating you, and he knew you were planning to marry her. He offered her money to get close to you, learn about your personal finances, and find a way to make you vulnerable.””

Ethan’s face went cold.

“How much?””

“Five million dollars upfront, with another fifteen million if she succeeded.””

Daniel let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Fifteen million? That’s more than enough to make someone comfortable for life.””

“That was the point,” Madison replied.

“Grant told her she would never need to work again.””

Ethan stared at her.

“And you expect me to believe you knew about this and waited until my wedding day to tell me?””

Madison flinched.

“No. I expect you to hate me for that.””

“Then we agree on something.””

Olivia touched Ethan’s arm, warning him to let Madison continue.

Madison’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know about the money at first. Victoria told me Grant was an old family connection who wanted to invest in a business she planned to start after the wedding. She said she was only asking questions about your company because she wanted to understand the industry.””

“And when did you realize what she was doing?””

“About six weeks ago.””

“What happened?””

Madison looked at the flash drive.

“I was at Victoria’s apartment when Grant called. She put him on speaker because she thought I was in the bathroom. He asked whether she had obtained the information he needed. She said she was working on it.””

Ethan leaned forward.

“What information?””

“Your private investment structure. The details of your family trust. Anything that could be used to pressure you into selling Carter Industries.””

The words landed heavily.

Carter Industries employed thousands of people. It manufactured industrial equipment, supplied infrastructure projects, and held contracts across the United States and Europe.

Ethan had inherited a company.

He had also inherited the responsibility of protecting the livelihoods tied to it.

If Grant Whitmore wanted to force a sale, personal financial information might be only the beginning.

“Did Victoria give him anything?”” Ethan asked.

Madison hesitated.

“She told him about your mother’s trust.””

Ethan’s fingers curled against the table.

“My mother’s trust is private.””

“I know.””

“How did she learn about it?””

“From you, I think. She told Grant that your mother had structured the inheritance in a way that gave you control of the company but placed certain family assets under separate management.””

Ethan remembered discussing his mother’s estate one evening at home. Victoria had been sitting beside him on the sofa, her head resting against his shoulder. He had spoken about his mother because he trusted her with the memories he rarely shared.

He had told her how his mother wanted him to protect the company from people who valued quick profits over long-term stability.

Victoria had kissed his cheek and told him she admired the way he honored his family.

Now he wondered whether she had been memorizing every word.

“Why would Grant need my family trust?”” he asked.

Madison’s voice dropped.

“Because he believes there’s a way to force a sale if you’re tied up in a financial scandal or unable to manage the company.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

The anonymous warning suddenly seemed less mysterious.

This was no longer simply a cruel bride planning to take advantage of a wealthy husband.

It was a calculated attempt to reach the heart of his business.

“Do you have proof?”” he asked.

Madison pushed the flash drive toward him.

“Emails. Messages. Audio recordings. I copied what I could find from a shared folder Victoria left open on her laptop.””

Daniel picked up the drive.

“Have you given this to anyone else?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

Madison’s composure cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

She pressed both hands against her mouth for a moment before lowering them.

“Grant has people who can ruin someone’s life without ever appearing in a room. He knows where I work. He knows where my parents live. When I told Victoria I wanted nothing more to do with the plan, she reminded me that my father’s business was struggling and that one phone call could make things worse.””

Olivia’s expression hardened.

“She threatened your family?””

“She didn’t have to say the word threatened. She told me that people who betrayed her often discovered how quickly their circumstances could change.””

Ethan stood and walked to the window.

Below him, a black car pulled up outside the hotel entrance. Guests in formal clothes stepped onto the pavement, smiling as photographers gathered near the flower-lined walkway.

His wedding was becoming a spectacle.

And somewhere inside the building, Victoria was preparing to walk toward him while believing she had already won.

Ethan turned back.

“Why today, Madison? Why wait until now?””

“Because I thought I could stop her without destroying everything.””

“How?””

“I begged her to end the wedding. I told her I couldn’t keep lying to you. She said it was too late, that Grant had already arranged everything.””

“Everything?””

Madison nodded.

“She said the marriage would give them access to information they couldn’t obtain otherwise. She said once you were legally tied to her, she could pressure you into making financial decisions that would benefit Grant.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“She intended to use the divorce settlement as leverage.””

“Yes. But there’s something else.””

Madison reached into her clutch again and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“I found this in her hotel room yesterday. I took a photograph before she returned.””

Ethan unfolded it.

The page contained a list of names, account references, and several dates. Most of it looked like an ordinary business worksheet, but one entry had been circled in red ink.

*CARTER FAMILY TRUST — AUTHORITY REVIEW — OCTOBER 27.*

Tomorrow.

Beneath it was another line.

*TRIGGER EVENT: MARRIAGE + CAPACITY CONCERN.*

Ethan read the words again.

“What does this mean?””

Madison shook her head.

“I don’t know. But Grant told Victoria that the wedding was the first step. He said there was a legal mechanism that could give them temporary control over certain assets if you were considered unable to manage your affairs.””

Olivia stood abruptly.

“They’re planning to have him declared incompetent?””

“I don’t know,” Madison whispered.

“I only know that Victoria said she needed you to trust her completely before tomorrow.””

Ethan felt the room tilt.

He had spent years building his reputation on the belief that he could recognize a bad deal before anyone else at the table.

Yet he had welcomed a stranger into his private life and handed her the one thing no contract could protect.

His trust.

Daniel inserted the flash drive into his laptop.

“Let’s see what’s on here.””

A folder appeared on the screen.

Inside were dozens of files, including emails, spreadsheets, and several audio recordings.

Daniel opened the first email.

The sender was Grant Whitmore.

The recipient was Victoria Hayes.

The subject line read:

*AFTER THE CEREMONY.*

Daniel began reading aloud.

“‘Once the marriage is official, stop asking questions. We need him relaxed and cooperative. His sister is the only potential obstacle, so make sure she stays occupied with family matters.’”

Olivia went pale.

“They know about me.””

Ethan moved behind Daniel’s chair.

“Open the next one.””

The second email was dated four weeks earlier.

It contained a detailed outline of the proposed settlement, including a payment schedule and instructions for moving money through a series of private accounts.

But the third email was different.

It had been sent from an address Ethan recognized immediately.

His executive assistant.

Marcus Reed.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“Marcus?””

Daniel opened the message.

It contained a copy of Ethan’s travel schedule, a list of upcoming board meetings, and a scanned version of his signature.

The attachment was labeled:

*SIGNATURE AUTHORIZATION — PRIVATE USE.*

Olivia covered her mouth.

“Your assistant gave them your signature?””

“I don’t know what he gave them,” Ethan replied.

“But he had access to my schedule and several internal documents.””

Daniel opened another file.

This one was an audio recording.

Grant’s voice came through the laptop speakers, smooth and unhurried.

“Once the wedding is over, we have a narrow window. If Carter signs the revised documents, we proceed with the asset arrangement. If he refuses, we use the alternative.””

Victoria’s voice followed.

“And what exactly is the alternative?””

Grant laughed softly.

“Something that makes him too distracted to fight us.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Madison whispered, “There’s another file.””

Daniel clicked on it.

The filename was simply:

*OCTOBER_27_FINAL.wav.*

The recording began with the sound of a door closing.

Then Victoria spoke.

“I’m not going to ruin my marriage before it starts.””

Grant answered, “You don’t need to ruin anything. You just need him to believe he’s losing control.””

Ethan felt his pulse hammering in his ears.

Victoria continued.

“What if he refuses to sign?””

“Then we make sure he has something else to worry about.””

A pause followed.

Then Grant said a sentence that made Olivia grip the back of Ethan’s chair.

“Once the board believes Ethan Carter is becoming unstable, they’ll ask for an independent assessment. If that happens, the trust can be reviewed. We don’t need him to be incompetent, Victoria. We need enough people to wonder whether he is.””

Victoria laughed nervously.

“And if he finds out?””

“He won’t. You’ll be his wife. You’ll be the person everyone expects to protect him.””

The recording continued.

Victoria’s voice became quieter.

“And if I want out?””

Grant’s answer was immediate.

“You’re not getting out. Not after everything I’ve paid for.””

The audio stopped.

Ethan slowly straightened.

For the first time since hearing Victoria’s confession, his anger had become something sharper.

Clarity.

Grant Whitmore wasn’t merely trying to steal money.

He was preparing to undermine Ethan’s credibility, weaken his position within the company, and use the marriage as a path toward the family trust.

Victoria had agreed to help him.

And Marcus Reed might have supplied the information they needed.

Ethan looked at Madison.

“Why did you decide to tell me today?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because Victoria called me this morning and told me that after the ceremony, I needed to destroy every copy of these files. She said Grant had promised to protect her if anything went wrong.””

“And you finally believed her?””

“I believed her when she said she was willing to sacrifice anyone to save herself.””

Madison glanced at the velvet box on the table.

“Then I remembered something you said in an interview last year. You said your mother taught you that the truth was worth more than any inheritance.””

Ethan looked away.

“My mother also taught me not to confuse being wanted with being loved.””

Madison’s face crumpled.

“I’m sorry.””

He studied her for a moment.

“You should have told me earlier.””

“I know.””

“You let me walk toward this wedding without knowing what was happening.””

“I know.””

“People could have lost their jobs because of this.””

Madison lowered her head.

“I know.””

Ethan wanted to punish her for waiting. He wanted to demand why she had watched him fall in love with a woman who considered him a transaction.

But the fear in her eyes was real.

And unlike Victoria, Madison had finally chosen to bring him evidence that could protect him.

“Give me the names of everyone who has seen these files,” he said.

“Only Victoria, Grant, and me. I think Marcus received some of the documents, but I don’t know how much he understands.””

“Then we’ll find out.””

Daniel closed the laptop.

“I’m sending copies to Michael. We need a forensic specialist to preserve the original files and verify their authenticity.””

“Do it,” Ethan said.

“And nobody confronts Grant or Marcus until we know exactly what they’ve accessed.””

Olivia looked toward the door.

“What about Victoria?””

Ethan’s gaze drifted to the velvet box.

For months, he had imagined the moment he would give her the necklace. He had pictured her fingers brushing the emeralds, her eyes filling with tears as he told her how much his mother would have wanted them to be happy.

That memory now felt like a photograph of a stranger.

“The ceremony starts in twenty minutes,” Daniel said.

“The guests are already seated. If we cancel, the story will be everywhere before dinner.””

“Let them talk,” Olivia snapped.

“You don’t owe her a wedding.””

Ethan remained silent.

Madison rose from her chair.

“If you want my advice, don’t walk down that aisle.””

Ethan met her eyes.

“Why?””

“Because Victoria believes she has already won. If she realizes you know the truth, she’ll destroy whatever evidence she can reach. She’ll call Grant.

She’ll warn Marcus. And she’ll make sure everyone hears her version before you can explain yours.””

Daniel nodded reluctantly.

“She’s right about that.””

Ethan looked at the clock.

He had two choices.

He could cancel the wedding, expose Victoria immediately, and risk giving Grant enough warning to cover his tracks.

Or he could allow the ceremony to proceed while quietly securing the evidence and protecting the company.

Neither option would bring back the woman he thought he loved.

But one might prevent thousands of employees from becoming collateral damage in a fight they knew nothing about.

He took the emerald necklace box from the table and slipped it into his pocket.

“Daniel, contact Michael and tell him I want an emergency meeting with the board before tomorrow’s scheduled review. Olivia, stay with Madison. I want both of you somewhere secure.””

Olivia stared at him.

“Ethan, what are you going to do?””

He walked toward the door.

“I’m going to make sure Grant Whitmore doesn’t get what he wants.””

“And Victoria?””

Ethan paused with his hand on the handle.

“I’m going to give her exactly what she thinks she came here for.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked back at him.

“She wants to marry a billionaire who will protect her reputation at any cost.””

His expression became unreadable.

“So let her walk down the aisle believing she’s won.””

He opened the door and stepped into the corridor.

The orchestra had begun the bridal procession.

Guests were rising from their seats.

And somewhere behind the closed dressing-room door, Victoria Hayes was smiling into a mirror, adjusting her diamond tiara, and preparing to become Mrs. Ethan Carter.

She had no idea that the man waiting at the altar now knew about Grant Whitmore, the forged documents, and the plan to question his mental stability.

She had no idea that the evidence was already being copied to his attorney.

And she had no idea that, just moments earlier, Michael Reeves had sent Ethan one final message.

The message contained a scanned page from the original trust agreement.

At the bottom was a clause Ethan had never seen before.

*If a beneficiary enters into a marriage under circumstances involving fraud, coercion, or deliberate financial deception, the trustee may immediately suspend any pending transfer of assets connected to that marriage.*

Below it was his mother’s signature.

And beneath that, in a handwritten note, were six words that made Ethan stop walking.

Your father knew this would happen.

Ethan stared at the message.

His father had died five years earlier.

His mother had been gone for eight.

And yet, somehow, the people who had planned to destroy him had overlooked one crucial detail.

His family had been preparing for a betrayal long before Victoria Hayes ever entered his life.
