Chapter 7: The Room Where the Truth Was Buried

The security alarm screamed through the mansion.

A sharp, endless sound that cut through every conversation and every thought.

Guests panicked instantly.

Some moved toward the exits.

Others pulled out their phones.

Security guards rushed toward the staircase.

But Adrian remained still.

Because he knew.

This was not a random break-in.

Someone wanted them to react.

Someone wanted them afraid.

“Everyone stay where you are,” Adrian ordered.

The command came naturally.

The same voice that had led thousands of employees.

The same voice that had negotiated billion-dollar deals.

But tonight, there was something different.

Tonight, Adrian was no longer fighting a business rival.

He was fighting someone who had stolen seven years of his life.

Daniel looked toward the upper floors.

“The alarm was triggered on the second floor.””

Adrian looked at him.

“What’s up there?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation was becoming familiar.

Too familiar.

“What’s up there?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The old study.””

Adrian frowned.

“My study?””

“Yes.””

“The one I haven’t entered since the accident?””

Daniel nodded.

A strange feeling moved through Adrian.

That room had been locked for years.

After the accident, he couldn’t bring himself to enter it.

Too many memories.

Too many unfinished plans.

Too many reminders of the man he used to be.

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

“We need to go.””

Adrian started walking.

Every step was still uncertain.

Every movement reminded him that his body had changed.

But he kept moving.

Sofie held Evelyn’s hand and followed.

Adrian noticed.

“Sofie, you should stay here.””

The little girl looked up at him.

“No.””

“Sofie.””

She shook her head.

“I need to come.””

“You don’t know what’s upstairs.””

She looked at him calmly.

“Yes, I do.””

Everyone stopped.

Adrian stared.

“What?””

Sofie looked toward the second floor.

“He’s waiting.””

A chill passed through the room.

Marcus exchanged a look with Evelyn.

Adrian noticed.

“You know something.””

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

“She feels things.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at Sofie.

“But she has been right before.””

Adrian didn’t understand.

But he understood one thing.

Too many impossible things had happened tonight to dismiss anything.

He turned.

“Stay close.””

Sofie nodded.

The group moved upstairs.

The mansion that had once felt elegant now felt unfamiliar.

The portraits lining the walls seemed to watch them.

The golden lights flickered.

The sound of the alarm echoed through the empty hallways.

When they reached the second floor, the old study door was open.

Adrian stopped.

It should have been locked.

He knew because he had personally ordered it.

Nobody entered that room.

Nobody.

Daniel walked ahead.

“Stay back.””

Adrian ignored him.

“This is my house.””

He stepped forward.

The door creaked.

Inside, everything looked untouched.

The wooden desk.

The shelves filled with books.

The old leather chair.

A photograph of Adrian and Clara sitting beside the ocean.

But something was wrong.

The room had been searched.

Drawers were open.

Documents were scattered.

The painting behind the desk was hanging crooked.

Adrian walked closer.

“What were they looking for?””

Marcus examined the room.

“Something they didn’t want you to find.””

Adrian looked around.

Then he noticed something.

A small scratch on the floor.

Near the bookshelf.

He moved closer.

There was a hidden compartment.

One that had been damaged.

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“You knew about this?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

Adrian pushed the bookshelf aside.

Behind it was a small safe built into the wall.

The door was open.

Empty.

Almost.

Inside was one thing.

A small envelope.

Adrian reached for it.

Nobody spoke.

The envelope had his name written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

*Adrian.*

His heart tightened.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

Clara’s.

He opened it slowly.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

He read.

*Adrian,*

*If you found this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.*

His breathing changed.

*I wanted to tell you everything, but every person I trusted became a danger to you.*

He looked up briefly.

Everyone was watching.

Then he continued.

*The accident was planned because someone discovered what we found.*

Adrian’s eyes moved faster.

*But the accident was never meant to kill you.*

He froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked at him.

“What does it say?””

Adrian ignored him.

He continued reading.

*They wanted you disabled. They wanted you removed from control of the company without making people suspicious.*

His hands shook.

*But there was something they didn’t know.*

Adrian swallowed.

The next sentence was underlined.

*You were not the only target that night.*

The room became silent.

Adrian looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

He read the final lines.

*The person behind this was someone we both trusted. Someone who knew our habits. Someone who knew our home.*

Then the last sentence.

*Someone who knew where I hid the evidence.*

Adrian lowered the paper.

A terrible thought entered his mind.

“The evidence…”

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Adrian stared at the empty safe.

“The evidence was here.””

Daniel looked shocked.

“Clara hid proof in your study?””

“Yes.””

“Then someone found it.””

Adrian looked around the room.

The broken safe.

The destroyed papers.

The missing documents.

Someone had come here before them.

Someone knew.

Suddenly, Sofie stepped forward.

She looked at the floor.

“What is it?”” Adrian asked.

She pointed.

“There.””

Everyone followed her finger.

A small piece of fabric was caught beneath the desk.

Marcus picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Adrian asked.

Marcus held it carefully.

“It’s from a jacket.””

“So?””

Marcus looked at Nathan.

Nathan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The fabric matched the same dark material Nathan had been wearing earlier.

Adrian stared at his brother.

Nathan’s face changed.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

The billionaire said nothing.

“I didn’t do this.””

The words sounded exactly like something a guilty person would say.

But Adrian noticed something else.

Nathan wasn’t looking at him.

He was looking at the fabric.

Like he knew what it was.

“You recognize it.””

Nathan looked up.

“No.””

“You do.””

Nathan became silent.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Nathan’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

Adrian laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

Nathan lowered his voice.

“Because it’s true.””

Before Adrian could answer, a sound came from behind them.

A soft click.

Everyone turned.

The study door slowly closed.

Not from the wind.

From someone outside.

Daniel rushed forward.

But the door locked instantly.

The lights went out.

Only emergency lighting remained.

Then a voice came through the hidden speakers in the room.

A voice Adrian recognized.

A voice that made his blood freeze.

“Hello, Adrian.””

Nobody moved.

Because they all knew that voice.

It belonged to someone who should have been impossible.

Someone who was supposed to be gone.

The voice continued:

“I know you finally found Clara’s letter.””

Adrian stared into the darkness.

“How?””

A quiet laugh answered.

“Because I was the one who helped her write it.””

Everyone froze.

Sofie grabbed Adrian’s hand.

Then the voice whispered:

“And Adrian…”

A pause.

“Your brother was never the person you should have been afraid of.””

The room went completely silent.

May you like

The voice delivered the final words.

“The person you trusted most is the one who destroyed your life.””
