Chapter 4: The Brother Behind the Shadow
The message remained glowing on Daniel Reeves’ phone.
Nobody spoke.
The words were simple.
But they carried a threat that everyone in the room understood.
*Stop digging, Adrian. The next miracle won’t save you.*
The billionaire stared at the screen.
His face showed no fear.
Only disbelief.
Because for the first time in seven years, the enemy he had been searching for had finally revealed itself.
Not with a confession.
Not with an apology.
With a warning.
Adrian slowly looked at Daniel.
“Where did that come from?””
Daniel’s fingers tightened around his phone.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“It came from an encrypted number.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
A cold, empty sound.
“Of course it did.””
He looked around the ballroom.
A place that had been filled with celebration only moments ago now felt like a crime scene.
Every person was watching him.
Watching the billionaire who had just stood.
Watching the man whose entire life had been turned upside down in less than an hour.
Adrian turned toward Marcus.
“You said my brother did this.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Adrian’s eyes hardened.
“Then prove it.””
Marcus expected the question.
He reached inside his coat and removed a small black folder.
“I brought this because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
He handed it over.
Adrian opened it.
Inside were copies of financial documents.
Bank transfers.
Private agreements.
Company records.
His eyes moved across the pages.
At first, the numbers meant nothing.
Then he saw the signatures.
His breathing changed.
“No.””
Marcus watched him carefully.
Adrian turned another page.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
Because there it was.
A series of transfers approved through a hidden account connected to Hawthorne Global.
And the authorization signature belonged to someone he knew better than anyone.
Nathan Hawthorne.
His younger brother.
The boy who used to sleep on the floor beside his bed during thunderstorms.
The man who hugged him after their parents died.
The person Adrian trusted more than anyone alive.
“This can be forged,” Adrian said.
Marcus didn’t argue.
“Yes.””
Adrian looked up.
“Then why are you showing me?””
“Because of this.””
Marcus pointed to the final page.
Adrian looked down.
His expression slowly changed.
The document was dated three days before his accident.
Three days.
Not years.
Not months.
Three days.
His fingers went numb.
“Where did you get this?””
Marcus looked away.
“From Clara.””
Adrian froze.
Again.
Everything led back to her.
His missing wife.
The woman who had become a ghost.
“Where is she?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Adrian stepped closer.
“I asked you where my wife is.””
Marcus looked directly into his eyes.
“She’s alive.””
The words should have brought relief.
Instead, Adrian felt anger.
A deep, painful anger.
“Then why isn’t she standing here?””
Nobody answered.
“Why did she let me believe she was dead?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Because someone wanted her dead.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
“The night of your accident wasn’t the only attempt.””
A silence followed.
Marcus continued.
“Clara discovered what Nathan was doing. She found the stolen money, the fake contracts, and the people helping him.””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“You knew.””
Daniel looked down.
Adrian’s voice sharpened.
“You knew she was alive.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That was enough.
Adrian stepped backward.
The pain in his chest was worse than any physical pain he had ever felt.
“My own attorney.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“You were the one person I trusted to tell me the truth.””
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Adrian shook his head.
“You all keep saying that.””
He looked at Sofie.
“You.””
Then Marcus.
“You.””
Then Daniel.
“Everyone decided what I was allowed to know.””
The little girl watched him quietly.
Then she walked forward.
Her tiny footsteps sounded strangely loud against the marble floor.
“Sometimes people hide the truth because they are scared.””
Adrian looked down at her.
“And sometimes?””
Sofie paused.
“Sometimes they hide it because they want to own it.””
The words were simple.
But Adrian understood.
Someone had controlled the information.
Someone had controlled his life.
And he hated that more than anything.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
The security team immediately moved toward the windows.
A guard rushed into the ballroom.
“Mr. Hawthorne.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What happened?””
The guard looked nervous.
“There’s a vehicle leaving the property.””
“Who?””
“We don’t know.””
Marcus moved toward the window.
Adrian followed.
Outside, through the rain-covered glass, a black SUV disappeared down the long driveway.
Adrian stared.
Something about it felt familiar.
Then he noticed the license plate.
His blood turned cold.
It was the same one from the photograph.
“The car.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Yes.””
Adrian’s hands tightened.
“They were here.””
Nobody spoke.
“They were watching.””
The guard looked confused.
“Sir?””
Adrian ignored him.
His mind was racing.
Someone had entered his home.
Someone had delivered a threat.
Someone knew Sofie was here.
And someone was close enough to watch everything.
He turned around.
“Lock down the mansion.””
The security team moved instantly.
For years, Adrian had built his empire by making quick decisions.
Now he was doing it again.
But this time, the enemy was inside his own world.
“Mr. Hawthorne,” Daniel said quietly.
Adrian looked at him.
“There’s something else.””
The room became silent.
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Daniel hesitated.
“I found something after Clara disappeared.””
Adrian waited.
“Something I never showed you.””
The anger returned.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
Adrian recognized it immediately.
It was from the hospital.
The week after his accident.
He looked at the image.
There he was.
Lying in bed.
Broken.
Exhausted.
Clara sitting beside him.
But that wasn’t what caught his attention.
Behind the hospital window was a reflection.
A person standing outside.
Watching.
Adrian looked closer.
Then he saw the face.
His entire body went still.
Because the person outside the hospital room wasn’t Nathan.
It wasn’t Marcus.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone he trusted.
Someone who had visited him every day.
Someone who had held his hand and promised everything would be okay.
“Who took this photo?”” Adrian whispered.
Daniel looked away.
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because I saw him outside your room.””
Adrian’s eyes remained locked on the picture.
“Who?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The same person who signed the transfer documents.””
Adrian looked up.
“Say it.””
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“It wasn’t Nathan.””
A strange silence filled the room.
Adrian stared.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
Toward the place where the mysterious message had appeared.
Toward the person who had been controlling everything from the shadows.
Then he said:
“The person who wanted you gone…”
He paused.
“And the person who helped you survive…”
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Daniel finished the sentence.
“Are the same person.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Sofie suddenly grabbed Adrian’s hand.
Her small fingers tightened around his.
“Someone is coming.””
Adrian looked down.
“What?””
The little girl stared toward the dark hallway leading deeper into the mansion.
Her face had lost its calm innocence.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“He’s angry.””
A second later…
The sound of slow footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Someone was walking toward them.
And a familiar voice called out:
“Adrian?””
Every person in the ballroom turned.
Because they all knew that voice.
May you like
The voice of the man who had just been accused.
Nathan Hawthorne had arrived.
