Amused

Chapter 3: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The emergency lights painted the ballroom in deep red shadows.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The billionaire who had just stood after seven years of being trapped in a wheelchair was now facing a stranger standing in the doorway, holding a photograph that seemed to carry the weight of a buried secret.

Adrian’s hand remained wrapped around his phone.

“Clara?””

The line was still open.

But there was no answer.

Only silence.

Then the call ended.

Adrian stared at the blank screen.

“She hung up.””

Daniel Reeves immediately stepped closer.

“Mr. Hawthorne, we need to get you somewhere secure.””

Adrian didn’t look at him.

His eyes stayed fixed on the man in the doorway.

The stranger slowly walked into the ballroom.

He was in his late forties, wearing a dark coat and carrying himself with the calm confidence of someone who knew exactly how much power he held.

The guests moved away as he passed.

Nobody recognized him.

But Adrian noticed one thing.

The man wasn’t afraid.

Not of him.

Not of the security team surrounding the estate.

Not of the hundreds of wealthy people watching.

That bothered Adrian more than anything.

“Who are you?”” Adrian demanded.

The man stopped several feet away.

“My name is Marcus Vale.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Adrian noticed.

“You know him?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That name…”

“What?””

The attorney looked uncomfortable.

“I’ve heard it before.””

Marcus gave a faint smile.

“Of course you have.””

He lifted the photograph.

“Because I was there the night everything changed.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“What photograph?””

Marcus looked down at it.

“Before I show you, I need you to understand something.””

Adrian took a step forward.

His legs shook.

But he stayed standing.

The entire room noticed.

Marcus noticed too.

His eyes briefly moved to Adrian’s feet.

Interesting.

“You really did it,” Marcus said quietly.

Adrian frowned.

“Did what?””

“Walk.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked toward Sofie.

“And she really found you.””

Sofie stared at him.

For the first time since entering the mansion, the little girl looked different.

Not scared.

But cautious.

Adrian saw it.

“You know her?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“Who are you?””

Marcus looked back at him.

“I’m the man who tried to tell you the truth seven years ago.””

Adrian laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Everyone has a story.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“Show me.””

Marcus walked closer.

Daniel stepped in front of Adrian.

“Stop.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You still protect him.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you should have told him the truth years ago.””

The room erupted in whispers.

Adrian turned toward Daniel.

“What is he talking about?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Daniel.””

The attorney looked away.

“Daniel.””

This time, the voice carried more weight.

“I asked you a question.””

Daniel slowly removed his glasses.

For fifteen years, he had been the man who always had an answer.

The man who could solve problems.

The man who could make crises disappear.

But now he looked like someone standing in front of a storm.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Adrian stared at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus finally spoke.

“From the truth.””

He handed the photograph to Adrian.

Adrian took it.

His fingers tightened immediately.

The image showed a car.

A black sedan.

Parked on a road surrounded by trees.

At first, it looked ordinary.

Then Adrian noticed the date.

Seven years ago.

The night of his accident.

His breathing slowed.

Marcus watched his reaction.

“Look closer.””

Adrian brought the photograph closer to the light.

Then he saw it.

A second vehicle.

A dark SUV parked behind his car.

Someone standing beside it.

A person wearing a black jacket.

The face was blurry.

But the license plate was visible.

Adrian froze.

Because he recognized it.

“That’s…”

His voice disappeared.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

His face went pale.

Adrian turned sharply.

“You knew?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Adrian…”

“You knew?””

The billionaire’s voice shook.

“You knew someone was there?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I suspected.””

The room became silent.

Adrian felt something inside him break.

Not his body.

Something worse.

Trust.

“You let me believe it was an accident.””

“I didn’t have enough proof.””

“You let me spend years thinking my life was destroyed by bad luck.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was afraid.””

Adrian stared at him.

“Afraid of what?””

Daniel looked around the room.

Then at Sofie.

Then at Marcus.

“Of what would happen if the person behind it found out I knew.””

A chill moved through the ballroom.

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“That’s the question you should have asked seven years ago.””

Adrian’s hands curled.

“I’m asking now.””

Marcus looked toward the crowd.

“Not here.””

Adrian immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“Mr. Hawthorne—”

“No.””

His voice echoed.

“You walked into my home, turned my life upside down, and brought me proof that someone tried to kill me.””

He stepped closer.

“I want answers now.””

Marcus studied him.

Then he looked at Adrian’s legs.

“You should not be standing.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“That’s not your concern.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at Sofie.

“It’s hers.””

Everyone looked at the little girl.

Sofie lowered her eyes.

Adrian noticed.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Marcus was quiet.

Too quiet.

Adrian’s voice became sharper.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Before Marcus could answer, Evelyn stepped forward.

“Because Sofie is the reason Clara survived.””

The entire ballroom turned.

Adrian stared at Evelyn.

“What?””

The older woman looked like she had been carrying this secret for years.

“She found Clara.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Clara died.””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””

Adrian stepped backward.

His legs almost failed him.

Daniel reached toward him.

Adrian pushed his hand away.

“No.””

He looked at Sofie.

The little girl stood silently.

“Tell me.””

Sofie looked up.

“Your wife is alive.””

The words were simple.

But they destroyed the world Adrian had lived in for seven years.

He turned away.

His eyes closed.

A thousand memories came rushing back.

Clara laughing in their kitchen.

Clara sitting beside him in the hospital.

Clara crying when doctors told them his injury might be permanent.

Clara promising him:

“I’m not leaving you.””

He had believed she broke that promise.

Now he didn’t know what was real anymore.

Marcus stepped closer.

“The person behind the accident wanted you gone.””

Adrian opened his eyes.

“Why?””

“Because you were about to discover something.””

“What?””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Then at the photograph.

“Something inside Hawthorne Global.””

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

His company.

His empire.

The thing he built from nothing.

“What about it?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Your company was being stolen from you.””

Adrian stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Nothing is impossible.””

The phrase reminded him of Sofie.

Marcus continued.

“Someone close to you had been moving money, changing contracts, and hiding evidence.””

Adrian’s face became colder.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the mansion windows.

Outside, rain began falling against the glass.

Then he said:

“The person who benefited most from your accident.””

Adrian waited.

The room waited.

Marcus finally spoke.

“Your own brother.””

A wave of shock moved through the ballroom.

Adrian went completely still.

His brother.

Nathan Hawthorne.

The man who had stood beside him since childhood.

The man who visited him every week after the accident.

The man who cried at his hospital bedside.

The man who told him:

“Brother, I’ll help you rebuild.””

“No,” Adrian whispered.

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

The lights suddenly flickered again.

Everyone looked upward.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“What is it?”” Adrian asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message had appeared.

Only one sentence.

May you like

But it was enough to make everyone in the room go silent.

*Stop digging, Adrian. The next miracle won’t save you.*
