Chapter 5: The Brother Who Came Smiling
The footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Confident.
Unhurried.
Everyone in the ballroom turned toward the dark hallway.
Adrian did not move.
He couldn’t.
Because the voice belonged to someone he had spent seven years trusting.
Someone whose name had just been connected to the worst betrayal imaginable.
Nathan Hawthorne stepped into the light.
He looked exactly as Adrian remembered.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly calm.
The same carefully styled hair.
The same expensive suit.
The same confident smile that had convinced board members, investors, and the entire world that he was the loyal younger brother standing beside a wounded billionaire.
But tonight, Adrian saw something different.
Not the brother he loved.
The man behind the mask.
Nathan stopped when he saw Adrian standing.
For a brief moment, genuine shock crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
“Adrian.””
His voice softened.
Almost emotional.
“You’re standing.””
Nobody spoke.
Nathan looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the security guards.
At Marcus.
At Daniel.
Then his eyes landed on Sofie.
A tiny flicker of something unreadable appeared.
Fear.
Adrian noticed.
And so did Marcus.
“You know her,” Adrian said.
Nathan’s smile faded slightly.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Adrian took one step forward.
A small movement.
But one that changed everything.
Seven years ago, Nathan had watched his brother lose the ability to walk.
Tonight, he was watching him take steps again.
And Adrian saw the discomfort.
“You’re lying.””
Nathan sighed.
“Brother…”
“Don’t call me that.””
The words cut through the room.
Nathan stopped.
For years, Adrian had dreamed about seeing him again.
He imagined anger.
He imagined forgiveness.
He imagined asking why.
But he never imagined feeling nothing.
Just emptiness.
Nathan slowly raised his hands.
“Adrian, I know something happened here tonight.””
“Something?””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“My wife, who everyone told me was dead, is alive.””
Nathan’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Adrian saw it.
“You knew.””
Nathan looked at him.
“No.””
“You knew Clara was alive.””
“No.””
“You knew.””
The billionaire’s voice became louder.
“You stood beside me for seven years while I mourned a woman who was alive.””
Nathan looked hurt.
“You think I would do that?””
Adrian stared at him.
“Yes.””
The answer landed heavily.
Nathan looked down.
For a moment, he appeared wounded.
Then he looked toward Daniel.
“This is what you’ve done?””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“You filled his head with accusations.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Don’t pretend you’re the victim.””
Nathan looked at him.
“And you must be Marcus Vale.””
A strange silence followed.
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“You know me.””
Nathan smiled faintly.
“I know everyone who gets close to my family.””
Adrian noticed the wording.
My family.
Not our family.
His family.
“You sound like you own us.””
Nathan looked back at him.
“After everything I’ve done for you?””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“What have you done?””
Nathan stared.
“I took care of the company when you couldn’t.””
“You took control.””
“I protected your legacy.””
“You benefited from my accident.””
The room went silent.
Nathan’s expression changed.
“Who told you that?””
Nobody answered.
That was all Adrian needed.
“You didn’t deny it.””
Nathan looked around.
At the people watching.
At the cameras.
At the security team.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No.””
“Adrian.””
“No.””
The billionaire stepped closer.
“I spent seven years alone because everyone around me decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
His voice trembled.
“I woke up every morning believing the woman I loved was dead.””
Nathan looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words made Adrian angrier.
“Sorry?””
Nathan looked at him.
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Nathan hesitated.
Adrian noticed.
“For letting you believe a lie?””
Nathan said nothing.
“For hiding Clara?””
Still nothing.
“For what?””
The silence became an answer.
Suddenly, Nathan looked at Sofie.
The little girl was holding Evelyn’s hand.
“Who is she?””
Adrian immediately moved between them.
A protective instinct he didn’t understand.
Nathan noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
“That’s interesting.””
“What?””
“You’ve known her for one night, and you already trust her more than people who have stood beside you for years.””
Adrian stared.
“Maybe because she’s the only person who hasn’t lied to me.””
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
For the first time, the calm expression cracked.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
Marcus saw it.
“He’s scared.””
Nathan turned.
“You don’t know anything about me.””
“I know enough.””
Nathan stepped closer.
“Do you?””
The room became tense.
Daniel moved between them.
“Enough.””
Both men looked at him.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I should have told Adrian years ago.””
Nathan’s expression changed.
“You’re really doing this?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No more.””
A heavy silence followed.
Nathan looked at him.
“You think confessing now makes you innocent?””
Daniel looked down.
“No.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“I know what I did.””
Adrian watched.
Daniel continued.
“I was afraid.””
Nathan laughed softly.
“Afraid?””
“Yes.””
“Of me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Nathan’s face became colder.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Nathan smiled.
“No, you don’t.””
He stepped closer.
“You think this is about money?””
Nobody spoke.
“You think I wanted your company?””
Adrian stared.
“Then what?””
Nathan looked at him.
For the first time, the anger beneath his calm appeared.
“I wanted you to stop destroying everything.””
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“You always thought you were the hero.””
The room went quiet.
“You built your empire. You saved people. You donated millions. Everyone loved Adrian Hawthorne.””
His voice became sharper.
“But nobody knew what it was like living in your shadow.””
Adrian stared.
Nathan continued.
“Every room we entered, people compared us.””
“My brother built this.””
“My brother achieved that.””
“My brother changed the world.””
His hands tightened.
“I was never Nathan.””
A strange sadness appeared in his voice.
“I was always Adrian’s little brother.””
Nobody expected that answer.
Even Adrian looked surprised.
For a moment, he saw the child Nathan had been.
The boy standing beside him.
The boy always trying to catch up.
Then Adrian remembered the documents.
The threat.
The accident.
The lies.
“Feeling invisible doesn’t give you the right to destroy my life.””
Nathan’s eyes hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I understand perfectly.””
Nathan looked away.
Then he reached into his coat.
Every security guard immediately moved.
“Don’t.””
Nathan slowly removed a small object.
Not a weapon.
A phone.
He held it up.
“There is something you need to see.””
Adrian didn’t move.
Nathan tapped the screen.
A video appeared.
The image was dark.
Shaky.
But Adrian recognized the location immediately.
The hospital.
The night after his accident.
His heart began racing.
Nathan pressed play.
The video showed Adrian lying unconscious.
Clara sitting beside him.
Then the door opened.
Someone entered.
Someone whose face was hidden.
But whose voice was clear.
A voice Adrian knew.
A voice he had heard thousands of times.
Then Nathan stopped the video.
Adrian looked up.
“What was that?””
Nathan stared at him.
“You wanted the truth.””
“Yes.””
Nathan handed him the phone.
“Then watch the rest.””
Adrian pressed play.
The hidden figure stepped closer to the hospital bed.
Closer to Clara.
Then the person spoke.
And Adrian felt the entire world collapse.
Because the voice belonged to the one person he never suspected.
The one person who had comforted him after the accident.
The one person who had cried with him.
The one person who had promised:
“I’ll always protect you.””
The video continued.
And Clara’s voice suddenly screamed:
“Please… don’t hurt him!””
Adrian froze.
Because now he understood.
The accident was not the beginning.
It was the middle.
May you like
Someone had been planning everything long before that night.
And the next person revealed on the recording was someone Adrian had invited into his home only hours earlier.
