Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Shadows
Victor Blackwood had spent his entire life believing he understood power.
Power was money.
Power was influence.
Power was having the ability to make people listen.
But as he drove alone toward the abandoned Blackwood estate property on the outskirts of the city, he realized something.
True power was knowing someone’s weakness.
And Adrian Cross had spent decades learning exactly where Victor’s weakness was.
His family.
His son.
His trust.
The location Richard sent was an old private facility that belonged to Blackwood Holdings years ago.
A place Victor barely remembered.
A place that had been abandoned after a failed business project.
A place his father had never allowed anyone to enter.
The rain fell heavily as Victor parked outside the building.
He turned off the engine.
For several seconds, he simply sat there.
His hands rested on the steering wheel.
His son was somewhere inside.
His father was somewhere inside.
And somewhere in the middle of all this was the truth that had destroyed his family.
Victor stepped out of the car.
He walked toward the entrance.
The door opened before he touched it.
Richard was waiting.
Older.
Tired.
Not the powerful man Victor remembered.
Just a father who looked like he had finally run out of ways to hide.
“Where is Ethan?””
That was the first thing Victor said.
Not hello.
Not why.
Not how could you.
Richard looked at him.
“He’s safe.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You took my son.””
“I protected him.””
“You kidnapped him.””
Richard looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
Victor stepped closer.
“Then explain.””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Richard opened the door wider.
“Come inside.””
Victor entered.
The old facility smelled like dust and forgotten memories.
The walls were covered with old company logos.
Blackwood Holdings.
A symbol that once represented success.
Now it felt like a warning.
Richard led him down a hallway.
“I never wanted this.””
Victor laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
Richard stopped.
“What?””
“You keep acting like everything happened to you.””
Victor stared at him.
“But you made choices.””
Richard lowered his head.
“Yes.””
That answer surprised Victor.
His father rarely admitted mistakes.
“I made choices.””
They continued walking.
“And some of those choices destroyed people.””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“Eleanor.””
Richard stopped.
The pain in his face was immediate.
“Yes.””
Victor looked at him.
“Tell me what happened.””
Richard took a deep breath.
“Your wife discovered Adrian’s plan.””
“What plan?””
“To take control of Blackwood Holdings.””
Victor frowned.
“Through Daniel Vale?””
Richard nodded.
“Daniel was only a piece.””
“What about Serena?””
Richard looked away.
“She was supposed to be the final piece.””
Victor felt cold.
“Explain.””
“Adrian knew I was vulnerable.””
Richard’s voice became quieter.
“He knew I would do anything to protect the company.””
Victor stared.
“So he used you.””
“Yes.””
“And Eleanor found out.””
“Yes.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“She found evidence that Adrian had been manipulating both families for years.””
Victor remembered the journal.
The documents.
The warnings.
“Then why didn’t you stop him?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because I thought I could control him.””
The answer was painful.
“I was wrong.””
Victor shook his head.
“You sacrificed Eleanor because you were arrogant.””
Richard didn’t argue.
“Yes.””
The honesty made Victor angrier.
Because it was easier when people lied.
Easier when there was someone to hate.
But Richard looked like a man who had spent twenty years hating himself.
“Where is Ethan?””
Richard pointed toward the end of the hallway.
“Before you see him, there’s something you need to know.””
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“I don’t have time.””
“You do.””
Richard looked at him.
“Because the person you think kidnapped Ethan is not the person who took him.””
Victor froze.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“When I arrived at the mansion, Ethan was already gone.””
Victor stared.
“The video.””
Richard nodded.
“Manipulated.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“What?””
“Adrian has controlled the security system for years.””
Richard walked toward a room.
“He made it look like I took Ethan.””
Victor followed.
“Why?””
“To make you hate me.””
A pause.
“And to isolate you.””
The door opened.
Inside was a control room.
Hundreds of old monitors covered the walls.
Richard turned one screen on.
Security footage appeared.
The Blackwood mansion.
Tonight.
Victor watched.
He saw Richard entering the nursery.
But then the footage changed.
A second angle appeared.
A person behind Richard.
A shadow.
Someone else.
Richard pointed.
“That’s him.””
Victor stared.
The figure moved closer.
The face remained hidden.
But the voice recording played.
A man spoke.
“Take the child.””
Victor felt his blood run cold.
The voice.
Calm.
Confident.
Familiar.
Richard looked at him.
“You know who that is.””
Victor didn’t answer.
Because he did.
Adrian Cross.
A door opened behind them.
Victor turned.
And his heart stopped.
Ethan.
A woman held him.
Serena.
Victor immediately moved forward.
But Ethan was asleep.
Safe.
Uninjured.
Serena looked exhausted.
“I found him.””
Victor stared.
“You?””
She nodded.
“Adrian took him through the hidden passage.””
Richard looked shocked.
“How did you get here?””
Serena looked at him.
“Because I followed him.””
Victor studied her.
For the first time, he saw something different.
Not the glamorous woman from the parties.
Not the woman who thought she was untouchable.
A frightened person trying to undo the damage she helped create.
She handed Ethan to Victor.
The moment he held his son, his entire body relaxed.
“My baby.””
Ethan opened his eyes slightly.
“Daddy.””
Victor closed his eyes.
The sound nearly broke him.
Then he looked at Serena.
“Why?””
She understood the question.
Why hurt him?
Why lie?
Why become part of this?
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because I was angry.””
She looked down.
“My whole life, I believed the Blackwoods destroyed my family.””
A pause.
“I thought hurting you would make things right.””
Victor said nothing.
“But when I saw Ethan…”
Her voice cracked.
“I realized I was becoming the same kind of person I hated.””
The room was silent.
Then the lights went out.
Everyone froze.
A slow clap echoed through the darkness.
One.
Two.
Three.
A man stepped from the shadows.
Older.
Calm.
Confident.
Victor immediately knew.
Adrian Cross.
The man who had existed only in documents and warnings.
The man who had destroyed families without ever appearing.
He smiled.
“Family reunions are always emotional.””
Victor held Ethan tighter.
Adrian looked at him.
“You look exactly like your grandfather.””
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“You used everyone.””
Adrian smiled.
“Everyone uses everyone.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You ruined everything.””
Adrian laughed softly.
“No, Richard.””
He looked around the room.
“I simply finished what your family started.””
Victor stared.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian walked closer.
“Your grandfather built an empire by destroying people.””
Victor said nothing.
“Your father spent decades trying to hide it.””
Adrian smiled.
“And your wife discovered it.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“You killed Eleanor.””
Adrian tilted his head.
“No.””
A pause.
“But I know who did.””
The room went silent.
Victor stared.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Richard.
Then back at Victor.
“Your father has been protecting one final secret.””
Richard’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Adrian smiled.
“You deserve to know.””
Victor looked between them.
“What secret?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“The night Eleanor died…”
He paused.
“Richard wasn’t the only person in that car.””
Victor felt his stomach drop.
Adrian continued.
“She wasn’t killed because she found the truth.””
A pause.
“She was killed because she found out who betrayed her.””
Victor looked at Richard.
His father looked devastated.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“Dad?””
Richard closed his eyes.
And whispered:
“Victor…”
The entire room went silent.
Because before Richard could finish, Adrian said the words that shattered everything.
“The person who caused your wife’s death…”
May you like
He smiled.
“Was someone you have been protecting your entire life.””
