Amused

Chapter 5: Eleanor’s Last Warning

Victor forgot how to breathe.

For six years, he had only seen Eleanor in photographs.

Frozen moments.

A smile captured forever.

A hand resting on his shoulder.

A mother holding a newborn Ethan.

But now she was moving.

Speaking.

Alive again on the screen.

Even though he knew it was impossible.

The video showed Eleanor sitting at a desk.

Her hair was tied back.

Her face looked tired.

Not the tiredness of someone who had a long day.

The tiredness of someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

Victor stepped closer.

“Eleanor…”

His voice cracked.

Behind him, Lily covered her mouth.

Martha, who had entered quietly moments earlier, began crying.

Because everyone in that room knew.

This was not just a video.

This was a message from a woman who had expected she might not survive.

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, then I was right.””

Victor froze.

Her voice.

The same voice that had once filled their home.

The same voice that had called him home when he worked too late.

“The truth did not disappear with me.””

Victor gripped the edge of the desk.

Eleanor continued.

“Victor, before you watch the rest of this, I need you to promise me something.””

A pause.

“Do not react with anger.””

Victor almost laughed.

Because anger was the only thing keeping him standing.

“Do not confront anyone until you know everything.””

Her eyes shifted slightly.

Like she was afraid someone might be listening.

“The person who hurt me is not someone outside our family.””

Victor’s blood ran cold.

“Someone inside.””

The video paused for a second.

Then continued.

“I spent months investigating the connection between Blackwood Holdings and Daniel Vale.””

Victor glanced at the documents scattered across the desk.

“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

A silence.

“He had help.””

Victor leaned closer.

“Who?””

As if she could hear him, Eleanor continued.

“I found evidence that someone within Blackwood Holdings was giving Daniel confidential information.””

Victor’s mind raced.

Employees.

Executives.

Family members.

Then Eleanor said something that made him stop.

“I believe the person helping him had access to every major decision our family made.””

Victor’s eyes widened.

Access.

Power.

Trust.

Only a handful of people had that.

The video continued.

“I tried to tell you, Victor.””

Her voice softened.

“I tried so many times.””

Victor closed his eyes.

The memory returned.

The kitchen.

The tea.

Her frightened expression.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

But the recording continued.

“You were always trying to protect us. I knew that.””

A small smile appeared on Eleanor’s face.

“That was the thing I loved most about you.””

Victor looked away.

Because hearing her say that hurt more than any accusation.

“But you were also surrounded by people who knew how to use that love against you.””

The screen flickered.

Then Eleanor reached for something off-camera.

A folder.

She placed it on the desk.

“This folder contains the information I found.””

Victor stared.

“I made copies because I knew someone would try to erase the evidence.””

She opened the folder.

“The first thing you need to understand is this.””

A pause.

“Serena Vale did not meet you by chance.””

Victor’s entire body went still.

“She was placed near you.””

Lily whispered, “Oh my God.””

Victor kept watching.

“I don’t know exactly what Serena knows. I don’t know whether she chose this path willingly or whether she was manipulated by her father.””

A tear formed in Eleanor’s eye.

“But she is connected.””

The video suddenly distorted.

Then Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

“If Serena is in your home, do not let her near Ethan.””

Victor stood completely frozen.

The warning he had ignored.

The warning he had failed to see.

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something about Daniel Vale.””

Eleanor leaned forward.

“He did not want money.””

Victor frowned.

“Then what?””

“He wanted revenge.””

The screen went black.

For five seconds, nobody moved.

Then the video returned.

But Eleanor was no longer sitting at the desk.

She was standing.

Looking nervous.

“The final thing I found was about the night of my accident.””

Victor’s heart stopped.

The room became silent.

“I was not driving home.””

Victor stared.

“What?””

Martha gasped.

Eleanor continued.

“My car was moved.””

Victor stepped back.

No.

His mind rejected it.

Six years.

Six years believing she had died because of a tragic accident.

“I don’t know who caused it.””

Eleanor looked terrified.

“But I know one thing.””

The video froze.

Then her final words appeared.

*Ask Richard why he lied.*

The screen went dark.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Victor stood motionless.

The words repeated in his head.

Ask Richard why he lied.

His father.

Again.

Every path led back to Richard.

Lily looked at him carefully.

“Sir…”

Victor raised a hand.

Not because he was angry at her.

Because he needed silence.

He needed one moment where nobody was telling him what to feel.

Then his phone rang.

The screen showed:

*Richard Blackwood.*

Everyone looked at it.

Victor stared.

Almost as if the phone itself was another betrayal.

Finally, he answered.

“What?””

His father’s voice came through.

“Victor.””

The calmness was gone.

“Where did you find the video?””

Victor’s grip tightened.

“You already know about it?””

Silence.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Richard sighed.

“Victor, listen to me.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You listen.””

A pause.

“You buried the truth about Eleanor.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

“Some truths destroy families.””

Victor looked toward Ethan’s nursery.

“My family was destroyed because you hid the truth.””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“Your wife didn’t understand what she found.””

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“What did she find?””

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“The reason Daniel Vale hated us.””

Victor waited.

But his father didn’t continue.

“Tell me.””

Richard exhaled.

“Your grandfather ruined Daniel’s family.””

Victor frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Blackwood Holdings was built on a decision that destroyed other people.””

Victor shook his head.

“That’s not enough.””

“It’s all you need to know.””

“No.””

Victor’s voice hardened.

“It’s not.””

Richard became quiet.

Then:

“Victor, there are things worse than losing money.””

Victor looked at the computer screen.

At Eleanor’s frozen face.

“What could be worse than losing my wife?””

Richard answered quietly.

“Finding out she was right about everyone.””

The call ended.

An hour later, Victor entered the guest room where Serena was staying.

She was sitting by the window.

No makeup.

No perfect appearance.

For the first time, she looked like an ordinary person.

When she saw him, she stood.

“You watched it.””

Victor didn’t answer.

“How much did you know?””

Serena looked down.

“I knew enough.””

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not good enough.””

She closed her eyes.

“I knew my father was obsessed with the Blackwood family.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed they destroyed him.””

Victor stepped closer.

“And you?””

She looked at him.

“I believed him.””

The honesty surprised him.

“So you came here for revenge.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I wanted to prove him wrong.””

Victor stared.

“What?””

Serena looked away.

“When I met you, I thought you would be exactly like my father described.””

“And?””

“You weren’t.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You were kind to Ethan. You loved your wife. You treated employees like people.””

Victor said nothing.

“Then I started seeing the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That my father wasn’t telling me everything.””

A long silence.

Victor studied her.

He wanted to believe there was a person beneath the lies.

But Ethan’s pain stood between them.

“You hurt my son.””

Serena looked down.

“I know.””

“Why?””

Her voice became barely a whisper.

“Because I was angry.””

Victor stared.

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“It’s the reason.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then she said something unexpected.

“Victor, I did something worse than you know.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Serena walked to the dresser.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in my father’s old belongings after he died.””

She handed it to him.

Victor looked at the writing.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the handwriting immediately.

Eleanor.

“How did you get this?””

Serena whispered:

“My father had it before she died.””

Victor opened the envelope.

Inside was one sentence.

Only one.

Written in Eleanor’s handwriting.

*The person who betrayed me was not Richard. It was someone I loved more.*

Victor looked up.

The room suddenly felt freezing.

Because there was one person Eleanor had loved more than almost anyone.

One person she trusted completely.

One person whose betrayal would have been impossible to imagine.

Then Victor noticed something else inside the envelope.

A photograph.

A photograph of Eleanor standing beside someone.

And the person next to her made Victor’s entire world collapse.

Because it wasn’t Richard.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It was someone he had never suspected.

Someone who had been in his home the entire time.

May you like

Someone who had raised him.

And someone who was still alive.
