Amused

Chapter 1: The Recording Beneath the Table

The first thing Victor Blackwood heard when he stepped into his mansion was not the sound of his son's laughter.

It was a scream.

A small, terrified scream that did not belong in a home built to protect a child.

Victor froze in the entrance hall, one hand still resting on the brass handle of the front door. He had expected silence. He had expected the familiar emptiness of the Blackwood estate after midnight, the quiet hum of the security system, the soft footsteps of employees finishing their evening duties.

He had not expected to hear his fourteen-month-old son crying like he was in pain.

For three seconds, Victor didn't move.

Then every instinct he had as a father took over.

He crossed the marble floor without making a sound.

The billionaire who had negotiated billion-dollar deals, survived ruthless competitors, and stared down investors who wanted him destroyed now moved like a man afraid of making one wrong noise.

Because somewhere inside his home, Ethan needed him.

Victor reached the doorway of the living room and stopped in the shadows.

What he saw made his blood run cold.

Serena Vale, the woman he had planned to marry in three months, stood beside the expensive white sofa wearing a designer dress that probably cost more than most people earned in a year.

Her hair was perfectly styled.

Her diamond earrings sparkled under the chandelier.

She looked exactly like the woman everyone admired at charity events.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Untouchable.

But on the floor in front of her was Ethan.

His son.

The little boy Victor had carried through sleepless nights after his wife died.

The little boy who still reached for the photograph of his mother every morning.

Ethan was crying as Serena gripped his tiny arm.

Not holding him.

Dragging him.

Across the cold marble floor.

Victor felt something inside him break.

Before he could step forward, another voice cut through the room.

"Stop!""

Lily Harper, Ethan's nanny, rushed forward with panic written across her face.

"You're hurting him!""

Serena turned sharply.

For a moment, Victor thought she would let go.

She didn't.

Instead, she looked annoyed.

Not frightened.

Annoyed.

"Don't raise your voice at me," Serena said.

Lily dropped to her knees and carefully reached for Ethan.

"Miss Vale, please. He's a baby. Look at his arm. He's scared.""

Serena laughed softly.

A cold, humorless sound.

"You really think you have authority here?""

Lily pulled Ethan close.

"You could have injured him.""

That was when Serena's expression changed.

The sweet smile she showed the world disappeared.

Victor watched from the darkness as the woman he thought he knew became someone else.

Someone cruel.

"You forget your place," Serena whispered.

Lily stood up slowly.

"My place is protecting Ethan.""

Serena stepped closer.

"Your place is doing what you're paid to do.""

"My job is not watching you hurt him.""

The room became silent.

Then Serena moved.

Fast.

Her heel struck Lily's stomach.

The nanny gasped and fell backward onto the floor.

Victor's hands curled into fists.

He wanted to rush forward.

He wanted to tear Serena away from them.

But something stopped him.

A realization.

Serena thought she was alone.

And if she thought she was alone, Victor wanted to know how far she would go.

She walked over Lily's fallen body and leaned down.

Her voice became almost gentle.

That was the worst part.

"Touch him again," Serena whispered, "and you disappear.""

Lily stared at her in disbelief.

"You can't do this.""

Serena smiled.

"Oh, Lily. You still don't understand.""

She glanced around the room.

At the cameras mounted in the corners.

At the security sensors.

At the empty hallway.

Then she lowered her voice.

"No one is going to believe you.""

Victor's eyes narrowed.

Cameras.

She was looking at the cameras.

Then he noticed something.

The small red lights were off.

Every single one.

His security system never went offline.

Not unless someone turned it off.

Someone inside the house.

Someone who knew exactly how it worked.

Serena picked up Ethan and placed him on the sofa.

The child immediately reached toward Lily.

"Ma...""

His weak little voice broke Victor's heart.

Serena grabbed a blanket and covered him.

Then she pulled out her phone.

Victor watched her type.

A few seconds later, she smiled.

"Perfect.""

Lily slowly pushed herself up.

"What did you do?""

Serena looked at her.

"I fixed the problem.""

"What problem?""

"The problem where everyone might believe you.""

Lily's face went pale.

Serena walked toward the hallway mirror and checked her reflection.

Then she practiced a sad expression.

Victor almost couldn't believe what he was seeing.

She wasn't panicking.

She was preparing.

Preparing a performance.

"I'll tell Victor you became aggressive," Serena said casually.

"I'll tell him I found you shaking Ethan and tried to stop you.""

Lily stared at her.

"You would lie about this?""

Serena turned around.

"Who do you think he'll believe?""

She walked closer.

"The nanny who has worked here for six months?""

A pause.

"Or the woman he's about to marry?""

Lily said nothing.

Because deep down, she knew the answer was not simple.

Victor had spent months introducing Serena to the world.

She had been beside him at every event.

She had smiled beside Ethan in photographs.

She had convinced everyone she was the perfect future stepmother.

Then Serena said the words that made Victor finally step out of the shadows.

"People like us don't lose to people like you.""

Victor's voice filled the room.

"People like who?""

Serena spun around.

The color drained from her face.

For the first time all night, she looked afraid.

"Victor?""

He stepped into the light.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

Lily looked at him, shocked.

"Mr. Blackwood...""

Victor ignored everyone except Ethan.

He walked straight to his son.

The little boy immediately reached for him.

"Daddy.""

That single word almost destroyed Victor.

He lifted Ethan carefully and checked his arm.

"Did she hurt you?""

Ethan buried his face against his father's shoulder.

Victor looked at Lily.

"How long?""

Lily hesitated.

"Sir...""

"How long has this been happening?""

The nanny's eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer, Serena stepped forward.

"Victor, don't listen to her.""

Her voice was shaking now, but she tried to hide it.

"She attacked Ethan. I came in and stopped her.""

Victor looked at her.

"You expect me to believe that?""

Serena's expression hardened.

"Yes.""

A strange silence filled the room.

Because Serena sounded confident again.

She had recovered.

She knew exactly what she wanted to say.

"Think about this," she continued.

"Why would I hurt Ethan? He's your son. I love him.""

Victor stared at her.

Then he noticed something beneath the side table.

A tiny blue light.

Blinking.

Once.

Twice.

A small device hidden behind a stack of magazines.

Victor walked over.

Serena's face changed.

Just slightly.

But Victor saw it.

"What is that?""

She said nothing.

Victor picked up the recorder.

The room went completely still.

Lily whispered, "I didn't put that there.""

Victor pressed the button.

Static filled the air.

Then Serena's voice echoed through the mansion.

"You think anyone will believe a cheap nanny over me?""

Serena stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Her own voice.

Her own cruelty.

Then Ethan's scream.

Then Lily's desperate cry.

"You're breaking his arm!""

Serena stepped backward.

"No...""

Victor didn't look at her.

He kept listening.

Because the recording had not ended.

There were more voices.

More sounds.

More evidence.

And then, after a few seconds of silence, a voice whispered from somewhere behind them.

A voice none of them expected.

"Sir...""

Everyone turned.

An older housemaid stood near the doorway, trembling.

Her name was Martha.

She had worked for the Blackwood family for twenty years.

Victor had never seen her look afraid.

Until now.

She looked at Serena.

Then at Ethan.

Then back at Victor.

"Sir... this wasn't the first time.""

The mansion became silent.

Victor slowly lowered the recorder.

"What did you say?""

Martha gripped her apron with shaking hands.

"I wanted to tell you.""

Her voice cracked.

"But she threatened my job.""

Serena's face turned pale.

"Martha, don't.""

The old housemaid flinched.

Victor noticed.

And that was enough.

"Tell me everything.""

Martha looked down.

"I saw things before tonight.""

Victor's jaw tightened.

"What things?""

Martha swallowed.

"Things that made me afraid for Ethan.""

Serena stepped forward.

"Victor, she's lying.""

But Victor didn't even glance at her.

Because beneath the fear in Martha's eyes, he saw something else.

Guilt.

She had been carrying this secret for a long time.

And as Victor held his son closer, he realized the recording beneath the table was not the beginning of Serena's betrayal.

It was only the first piece of a much darker truth.

Then Martha reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Her hands were shaking.

"Sir...""

She looked at Victor.

"There is something else you need to know about Miss Vale.""

May you like

Victor unfolded the paper.

And the name written at the bottom made his entire world stop.
