Chapter 10: The Truth That Set Them Free

Victor Blackwood had spent six years asking one question.

Why?

Why did Eleanor die?

Why did his mother disappear?

Why did his father hide the truth?

Why did Serena enter his life?

But standing in that abandoned facility, holding his son while Adrian Cross watched with a cruel smile, Victor realized something.

The question had never been *why*.

It had always been *who*.

And now everyone was waiting for the answer.

Victor looked at Richard.

His father looked older than he ever had.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just broken.

“Dad.””

The word came out quietly.

Almost like when Victor was a child.

Richard looked at him.

“I never wanted you to know this way.””

Victor’s grip tightened around Ethan.

“Then tell me the truth.””

A long silence.

Adrian smiled.

“Finally.””

Richard turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

Adrian laughed.

“You spent twenty years hiding behind silence.””

He stepped closer.

“Let him hear it.””

Victor looked at Richard.

“Is it true?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And that hurt more than any confession.

“Did you cause Eleanor’s death?””

Richard’s eyes filled with pain.

“No.””

Victor searched his face.

“Then why does he think you did?””

Richard swallowed.

“Because I lied.””

A pause.

“I lied about everything.””

Twenty years earlier.

That was where the truth began.

Richard explained slowly.

After Clara discovered Adrian’s plan, she tried to expose him.

But Adrian was already too powerful.

He had people inside the company.

People who owed him money.

People who owed him favors.

People who feared him.

“He didn’t destroy families by force,” Richard said.

“He destroyed them by making them destroy themselves.””

Victor listened.

“And Eleanor?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“She found the documents.””

“The same ones you hid?””

“Yes.””

Victor’s expression hardened.

“She trusted you.””

“I know.””

Richard’s voice cracked.

“She came to me because she thought I would help her.””

The room became silent.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“I hesitated.””

That answer surprised Victor.

“Hesitated?””

“I was afraid.””

Richard looked at him.

“I had spent my entire life building Blackwood Holdings. I thought if the truth came out, everything would collapse.””

Victor shook his head.

“So you protected the company.””

“No.””

Richard’s eyes filled with regret.

“I protected my pride.””

The honesty was painful.

“But when I realized Adrian was willing to hurt Eleanor, I tried to stop him.””

Victor stared.

“Too late.””

Richard nodded.

“Too late.””

Adrian leaned against the wall.

Enjoying every second.

“You see, Victor?””

His voice was calm.

“Your father wasn’t a hero.””

Victor looked at him.

“No.””

A pause.

“He wasn’t.””

Richard lowered his head.

“But he wasn’t the monster you wanted him to be either.””

Adrian’s smile faded slightly.

Victor noticed.

For the first time, Adrian looked uncomfortable.

Because the truth was not going the way he wanted.

“You’re very confident for someone standing in a room full of enemies,” Victor said.

Adrian smiled.

“I have no enemies.””

He looked around.

“Only people who eventually understand reality.””

Victor stared at him.

“You manipulated Serena.””

“Yes.””

Serena looked away.

“You manipulated Daniel Vale.””

“Yes.””

“You manipulated my father.””

Adrian smiled.

“Yes.””

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

The question finally came.

Why.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Because the Blackwood family had everything.””

Victor said nothing.

“Money.””

A step.

“Power.””

Another step.

“Respect.””

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“And my family had nothing.””

Victor looked at him.

“Your father made choices.””

Adrian laughed.

“Exactly.””

He pointed at Victor.

“That’s what makes this interesting.””

He walked closer.

“Everyone in this room made choices.””

A pause.

“Your father chose money.””

He looked at Serena.

“She chose revenge.””

Then at Richard.

“He chose silence.””

Finally, at Victor.

“And you chose trust.””

Victor stared.

“And what did you choose?””

Adrian smiled.

“Patience.””

Then the sound of sirens filled the distance.

Everyone froze.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Victor saw it.

For the first time.

Fear.

“You called the police.””

Adrian looked at Victor.

Victor said nothing.

Because he had.

While driving to the facility, he had activated the emergency location system built into his phone.

A system his father had installed years ago.

A system Adrian apparently didn’t know about.

Adrian stepped backward.

“You think this ends here?””

Victor held Ethan closer.

“Yes.””

Adrian laughed.

“No.””

He looked at Serena.

“At least tell him the last secret.””

Serena frowned.

“What?””

Adrian smiled.

“The reason you were chosen.””

Victor looked at Serena.

“What is he talking about?””

Serena’s face changed.

“I…”

Adrian continued.

“Tell him.””

Serena looked down.

Then she spoke.

“When I was young, my father told me I had a sister.””

Victor frowned.

“What?””

Serena’s eyes filled with tears.

“She died before I was born.””

Silence.

Adrian smiled.

“But that wasn’t true.””

Victor felt something cold move through him.

“Explain.””

Serena looked at him.

“My father said my sister was taken away.””

A pause.

“By the Blackwoods.””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

Serena nodded.

“I spent my entire life believing that.””

She looked at Adrian.

“He used that pain.””

Victor understood.

Another manipulation.

Another weapon.

Adrian had spent years turning people’s suffering into control.

“But later I found the truth.””

Victor waited.

“Your family didn’t take my sister.””

Serena wiped her tears.

“Adrian did.””

The room went silent.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Serena looked at him.

“You lied to my father.””

For the first time, Adrian looked angry.

“You were supposed to hate the Blackwoods.””

Serena shook her head.

“I did.””

A pause.

“Until I saw what you really were.””

The police arrived minutes later.

Adrian Cross was finally taken away.

But before he left, he looked at Victor.

“You think you won?””

Victor stood silently.

Adrian smiled.

“Truth doesn’t fix everything.””

Victor looked at Ethan.

“No.””

A pause.

“But it gives people a chance to.””

And for once, Adrian had no answer.

Months passed.

The Blackwood mansion changed.

Not because of renovations.

Not because of money.

Because the people inside it changed.

The cameras were replaced.

The security system was rebuilt.

But more importantly, the secrets were gone.

Victor never forgot what happened.

He never pretended everything was suddenly perfect.

Some wounds stayed.

Some memories hurt.

But Ethan was safe.

And that mattered most.

Lily remained with the family.

Not as an employee.

As someone Victor trusted.

Someone who had protected his son when he failed to see the danger.

Martha retired peacefully.

But she visited every week.

She always brought Ethan his favorite cookies.

And Clara?

Victor spent every day rebuilding what twenty years had stolen.

Their relationship was not magically repaired.

There were too many lost moments.

Too many birthdays.

Too many memories they could never recover.

But they created new ones.

And sometimes, that was the only way forward.

A year later, Victor stood in the garden watching Ethan run through the grass.

His son laughed.

A real laugh.

The kind Victor feared he might never hear again.

Clara stood beside him.

“He looks like Eleanor.””

Victor smiled softly.

“He does.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Clara said:

“She would be proud of you.””

Victor looked down.

“I failed her.””

His mother shook her head.

“No.””

She placed a hand on his shoulder.

“You found the truth.””

Victor watched Ethan.

“And almost lost everything doing it.””

“But you didn’t.””

A small smile appeared.

“Because you finally learned something Eleanor always knew.””

“What?””

Clara looked at him.

“Love is not protecting people by hiding pain.””

A pause.

“Love is trusting them enough to face the truth together.””

Victor thought about that.

The lies.

The secrets.

The years stolen by fear.

Then he nodded.

That evening, Victor returned to the old archive one final time.

Not to search.

Not to uncover another secret.

Just to close the door.

He found Eleanor’s letter.

The one she had written before everything fell apart.

He read it again.

*If you are reading this, it means you found the truth.*

*I hope you understand something.*

*The truth may hurt you.*

*It may change everything.*

*But lies will slowly destroy the people you are trying to protect.*

Victor smiled through the tears.

She had known.

She had always known.

He folded the letter carefully.

Then placed it back where it belonged.

Not hidden.

Not buried.

Preserved.

Because some stories deserved to be remembered.

Not because they were painful.

But because surviving them proved something.

A family could be broken by secrets.

A family could be controlled by fear.

But when the truth finally came into the light…

May you like

A family could choose to heal.

And this time, Victor Blackwood made sure no one would ever take that choice away from them again.
