Chapter 9: The Choice That Changed Everything
I spent the entire night staring at the photograph.
Victoria.
Standing beside Adrian.
Two people I thought belonged to completely different parts of my life.
Two people who had no reason to stand together.
But they did.
The image sat on my desk like a silent accusation.
I wanted to believe there was an explanation.
I wanted to believe there was something I didn’t understand.
Because the alternative meant accepting that the woman I married had been connected to the man who destroyed my family.
I looked through the glass wall of my office.
The mansion was quiet.
Everyone was asleep.
Except me.
I picked up the photograph again.
The date was clear.
Yesterday.
Victoria had lied.
Again.
The next morning, I found her in the living room.
She was sitting beside the window, drinking coffee.
For once, she didn’t look confident.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.
When she saw me, she knew.
“You found him.””
I stopped.
“You knew I would.””
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.””
“Adrian.””
Her fingers tightened around the cup.
“Yes.””
The answer came too easily.
I walked closer.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“How long have you known he was alive?””
A long silence.
“Eight years.””
My chest tightened.
Eight years.
The same amount of time I had lived with unanswered questions.
“You knew where he was?””
“Not always.””
“But you found him.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
Victoria looked at me.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
I almost laughed.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She looked away.
“I don’t know if you’ll forgive me.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not your decision.””
She closed her eyes.
“Fine.””
A deep breath.
“Adrian was the reason Sophia was in danger.””
I waited.
“Not because of Amara.””
“Then why?””
“Because Sophia discovered what he had done.””
“The fraud.””
Victoria nodded.
“He was stealing money from the company.””
I frowned.
“That explains why Daniel hated him.””
“It explains more than that.””
She looked at me.
“Adrian wasn’t just stealing.””
“What else?””
“He was building something.””
“Something?””
“A network.””
The word made my expression change.
“What kind of network?””
Victoria’s voice became quieter.
“People who controlled information.””
I stared at her.
“You’re saying he manipulated everyone?””
“Yes.””
“Then why were you with him?””
Her face changed.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Because before I met you…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“Before I met you, Adrian owned my life.””
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked down.
“I was young. I trusted the wrong people.””
She swallowed.
“Adrian knew things about me.””
“What things?””
“Things that could destroy my reputation.””
I studied her.
“Blackmail.””
She nodded.
“He used fear to control me.””
I wanted to believe her.
But trust was something I no longer gave easily.
“So you married me because he told you to?””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“No.””
“Then why?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward Amara’s room.
“Because I fell in love with you.””
The words surprised me.
She continued.
“At first, Adrian wanted information. Your company. Your investments. Your weaknesses.””
“And you?””
“I was supposed to help him.””
The honesty shocked me.
“You were working for him.””
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“But then I met Amara.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And everything changed.””
Victoria told me about the first time she held Amara.
About the moment she realized the little girl wasn’t a weapon.
She was a child.
A child surrounded by adults fighting over secrets.
“I wanted to leave.””
Victoria’s voice shook.
“But Adrian threatened me.””
“With what?””
“Everything.””
She looked at me.
“He said if I left, he would expose Sophia’s secret.””
I frowned.
“What secret?””
“That Amara wasn’t your biological daughter.””
I looked away.
“So he used it against you.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would look at Amara differently.””
I immediately shook my head.
“I never would.””
“I know that now.””
She wiped a tear.
“But eight years ago, I didn’t.””
The silence between us was heavy.
Then I asked the question I had avoided.
“Did you hurt her?””
Victoria looked confused.
“Amara?””
“Yes.””
Her face changed.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She lowered her head.
“No.””
The answer was quiet.
“I never wanted to hurt her.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
The admission mattered.
Because for the first time, she wasn’t defending herself.
She was accepting what she had done.
“I was angry at the world.””
She looked at me.
“And Amara reminded me of everything I couldn’t fix.””
I listened.
“But that was my weakness.””
Her voice broke.
“She didn’t deserve any of it.””
Later that day, I met Daniel and Elena at a private location.
There were too many secrets between us.
But now we needed the truth.
No more hiding.
Elena looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t respond.
She deserved honesty.
But forgiveness was not something I could give yet.
“Tell me about Sophia’s death.””
Her eyes lowered.
“I was there.””
Daniel looked away.
I already knew.
“Start.””
Elena took a breath.
“Sophia called me that night.””
“Why?””
“She had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Adrian was planning to take control of your company.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“By using Amara.””
The room became silent.
“He wanted custody.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Amara was his biological daughter.””
The words still hurt.
Even though I knew.
“He believed she gave him power over you.””
I shook my head.
“He didn’t want his daughter.””
“No.””
Elena looked at me.
“He wanted control.””
“What happened that night?””
She looked devastated.
“Sophia was going to meet me. She wanted to give me the evidence.””
“But she never arrived.””
Elena nodded.
“Because someone followed her.””
“Adrian?””
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“Then who?””
Elena looked at Daniel.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I was there.””
I stared at him.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I followed Sophia.””
My anger returned.
“Why?””
“Because I knew she was in danger.””
“Then why didn’t you save her?””
His face broke.
“Because I was too late.””
The room became quiet.
“She was already gone when I arrived.””
“Then why did you hide it?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because Adrian threatened me.””
“With what?””
“He said if I exposed him, he would make sure Amara disappeared.””
I stared at him.
“You all kept choosing secrets over me.””
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
That evening, Marcus called.
“Sir.””
His voice was urgent.
“What happened?””
“We found Adrian.””
My body went still.
“Where?””
“At an old property outside the city.””
“Is he alone?””
“No.””
A pause.
“Victoria is there.””
My heart dropped.
I looked toward the room where Amara was drawing.
“Keep watching.””
“Sir, should we move in?””
“No.””
I needed answers.
Real answers.
“Wait.””
I arrived at the property thirty minutes later.
The building was abandoned.
Broken windows.
Empty rooms.
A place where secrets were stored.
I entered quietly.
Voices came from inside.
Adrian.
“I told you this would happen.””
Victoria’s voice answered.
“You don’t control me anymore.””
I stopped.
“You still don’t understand.””
Adrian laughed.
“You think Charles will forgive you?””
Silence.
“He knows everything now.””
“I know.””
“And he still doesn’t know the worst part.””
My heart tightened.
The worst part.
Victoria sounded scared.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian replied:
“The truth about Amara’s birth.””
I stepped closer.
Victoria whispered:
“What truth?””
Adrian laughed.
“The truth that even Naomi doesn’t know.””
I froze.
Even Naomi?
Adrian continued.
“Charles thinks this is about blood.””
A pause.
“But he doesn’t know the real reason Sophia died.””
My hand tightened.
I pushed open the door.
Everyone turned.
Adrian smiled.
“Charles.””
I stared at him.
“Tell me.””
His smile faded.
“Tell you what?””
“Why Sophia died.””
Silence.
Then Adrian looked at Victoria.
And said:
“Because your wife wasn’t the only person who made a deal eight years ago.””
I looked at Victoria.
Her face turned pale.
Adrian continued:
“The person who changed Amara’s birth records…”
He paused.
“And erased her real identity…”
May you like
His eyes moved toward Victoria.
“Was Victoria herself.””
