Chapter 7: The Brother Behind the Door
The name on the screen felt impossible.
*Daniel Ashford.*
My brother.
My own blood.
For several seconds, I convinced myself I had misunderstood.
Maybe the video was unclear.
Maybe the shadow was someone else.
Maybe Marcus had made a mistake.
Because the alternative was something my mind refused to accept.
Daniel had been there through everything.
He stood beside me when our father died.
He helped me build my company from nothing.
He held Amara the day she came home from the hospital.
He called himself her uncle.
Family.
I stared at the frozen image of him behind Sophia.
“Play it again.””
Marcus looked at me carefully.
“Sir—”
“Play it again.””
He pressed the button.
The video restarted.
Sophia appeared on the screen.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“Charles, if you’re watching this, something happened.””
I watched every second.
Every movement.
Every sound.
Then Daniel appeared in the background.
The same posture.
The same voice.
The same man.
No mistake.
My stomach turned.
“How long has this existed?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“We found several files hidden in Elena’s apartment.””
“Several?””
“Yes.””
“Why would Elena have this?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I stood.
The room suddenly felt too small.
“My brother knew.””
Marcus didn’t respond.
Because he knew what I meant.
Daniel knew about Amara.
He knew about Sophia.
He knew the truth.
And he let me live in a lie for eight years.
I found Daniel the next morning at Ashford Industries.
The building was the symbol of everything we had built together.
The glass walls.
The marble lobby.
The employees walking quickly with their coffee and laptops.
Everyone respected the Ashford name.
Everyone believed we were unstoppable.
They didn’t know the family behind the name was falling apart.
Daniel’s assistant looked surprised when I walked in.
“Mr. Charles, you didn’t have an appointment.””
“I don’t need one.””
She immediately stood.
“Should I tell Mr. Daniel you’re here?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I walked past.
The door to Daniel’s office was slightly open.
He was standing by the window.
Exactly like he owned the world.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Charles.””
I closed the door behind me.
The smile disappeared.
Because he saw my face.
“What happened?””
I placed the folder on his desk.
“Tell me about Sophia.””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“What about her?””
“You were there the night she died.””
Silence.
Daniel stared at me.
Then he laughed softly.
“Where did you hear that?””
Not denial.
A question.
My anger rose.
“You’re not even going to pretend?””
He looked away.
“Charles.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I watched the video.””
His face became still.
“What video?””
“The one Sophia recorded before she died.””
That was when his confidence disappeared.
Just for a moment.
But enough.
“You found it.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
“I knew you would eventually find out.””
Those words were worse than any confession.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“How could you?””
He looked tired.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to use that excuse anymore.””
He stood.
“You have no idea what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
He remained silent.
“Tell me why my wife was afraid.””
Daniel looked down.
“Because she discovered something dangerous.””
“What?””
He walked toward the cabinet and poured himself a drink.
The calmness made me furious.
“My business partner was involved in things he shouldn’t have been involved in.””
I stared at him.
“What does that have to do with Sophia?””
“She found out.””
“Found out what?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Your company wasn’t as clean as you thought.””
The words hit me.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying there were people around you making decisions without your knowledge.””
“Who?””
He looked at the floor.
“Victoria.””
I froze.
“Victoria?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
He walked closer.
“She married you because she knew your position. Your money. Your influence.””
I felt anger.
“Be careful.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“You lied to me for eight years.””
His face changed.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You made choices.””
I returned to the mansion with more questions than answers.
The worst part wasn’t knowing there was a conspiracy.
The worst part was realizing everyone around me had pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
When I entered the living room, I saw Victoria standing near the window.
She looked like she had been waiting.
“You saw him.””
I stopped.
“You knew I would.””
She turned around.
“Daniel always knew this day would come.””
My eyes narrowed.
“How much do you know?””
She looked away.
“Enough.””
“Enough?””
I walked toward her.
“You knew my brother was involved.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“Because telling you would have put Amara in danger.””
“That’s not your decision to make.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“But someone had to keep her alive.””
I stared at her.
“Alive?””
She nodded.
“You think Sophia’s death was the end?””
I said nothing.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Charles, you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who else?””
Victoria hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Someone inside your company.””
I frowned.
“My company?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Where Amara’s room was.
Then back at me.
“Someone who has access to everything.””
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered immediately.
“Sir.””
His voice was urgent.
“We found Elena.””
“Where?””
“She’s at an old warehouse near the river.””
“Is she alone?””
A pause.
“No.””
My grip tightened.
“Who is with her?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then answered:
“Daniel.””
My eyes moved toward Victoria.
She saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer.
Because my brother and Elena were together.
The two people connected to Sophia’s death.
And I knew I had to get there before the truth disappeared again.
The warehouse was abandoned.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal.
Dust covering the floor.
Marcus and I entered quietly.
Voices came from inside.
Daniel.
“You should have destroyed it years ago.””
Elena’s voice shook.
“I tried.””
“You failed.””
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
I stopped outside the doorway.
Daniel continued.
“Charles cannot know everything.””
Elena whispered:
“He already knows enough.””
My blood ran cold.
I stepped inside.
“Then maybe you should explain the rest.””
Both of them turned.
Elena’s face went pale.
Daniel looked shocked.
For the first time in years, my brother looked afraid of me.
“Charles.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why did you let me believe Sophia’s death was an accident?””
Silence.
Elena started crying.
Daniel looked away.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Because Sophia was going to expose me.””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“She discovered what I had done.””
“What did you do?””
Daniel took a breath.
And then he said:
“I wasn’t trying to take Amara away.””
A pause.
“I was trying to protect her from her real father.””
My face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked at Elena.
Then back at me.
And his next words destroyed everything I believed.
“Charles…”
May you like
He swallowed.
“Amara is not your biological daughter.””
