Amused

Chapter 8: The Bloodline Hidden for Eight Years

The words struck harder than any physical blow.

*“Amara is not your biological daughter.””*

For a moment, I heard nothing.

Not Daniel.

Not Elena.

Not the distant sound of rain hitting the warehouse windows.

Nothing.

My mind rejected the sentence before my heart could even understand it.

I stared at my brother.

The man who had known every important moment of my life.

The man who had watched me hold Amara for the first time.

The man who had called her his little niece.

“You’re lying.””

My voice was quiet.

Daniel didn’t move.

“I wish I was.””

I stepped forward.

“You expect me to believe this?””

“No.””

His eyes were filled with something I had never seen before.

Regret.

“I expect you to hate me.””

I looked at Elena.

She was crying silently.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

She didn’t answer.

That silence destroyed me more than Daniel’s words.

“Elena.””

She looked up.

“I need you to tell me.””

Her lips trembled.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he’s telling the truth.””

The warehouse seemed to tilt.

I grabbed the edge of the table beside me.

“No.””

Elena took a step closer.

“Charles—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No. I raised her.””

Nobody spoke.

“I was there when she learned to walk.””

My voice cracked.

“I was there when she said her first word.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I held her when she had nightmares.””

My eyes filled with anger.

“I was her father.””

Daniel lowered his head.

“Yes.””

That answer confused me.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You are her father.””

I stared at him.

“But?””

He swallowed.

“But not because of blood.””

The rain outside grew heavier.

“You knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“I knew.””

“How long?””

“Since before she was born.””

My chest tightened.

“And you never told me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The night Sophia died.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the floor.

“She wanted to tell you.””

My breathing became uneven.

“Sophia knew?””

“Yes.””

“She knew Amara wasn’t mine?””

“She knew everything.””

I closed my eyes.

The memories came rushing back.

Sophia holding my hand in the hospital.

Sophia crying.

Sophia saying she had something important to tell me.

I remembered being called away because of a business emergency.

I remembered promising her we would talk later.

There was never a later.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel was silent.

“Tell me.””

His face changed.

“Your wife found out who Amara’s biological father was.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then Elena spoke.

“Naomi was not the only person involved.””

My eyes moved toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She took a deep breath.

“Amara was born through a complicated situation.””

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

Elena nodded.

“The man who fathered Amara was someone Sophia knew.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

My patience disappeared.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The man who caused all of this.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

“Your former business partner.””

I felt a chill.

“Adrian Vale?””

Daniel nodded.

The name hit me.

Adrian.

The man who helped me build my company.

The man who disappeared from my life six months before Amara was born.

The man everyone believed had left after a business disagreement.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“He and Sophia had a relationship before she met you.””

I stepped back.

The information was too much.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

“Sophia would never.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She loved you.””

That made me angry.

“Then why?””

“Because she thought she had lost the chance to have a family.””

I looked away.

My anger mixed with pain.

The woman I loved had carried a secret.

But why?

Why didn’t she trust me?

Elena answered softly.

“Because Sophia believed you would leave.””

I closed my eyes.

That was the cruelest part.

Because I knew Sophia.

She had always been afraid.

Afraid she wasn’t enough.

Afraid love had conditions.

But I never imagined she carried that fear alone.

We returned to the mansion before sunrise.

Nobody spoke during the drive.

There was nothing left to say.

My entire understanding of my family had changed overnight.

When I entered the house, Amara was sitting at the kitchen table.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were sleepy.

“Daddy?””

The sound of her voice nearly broke me.

I walked toward her.

She smiled.

“You’re home.””

I knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

She touched my face.

“You look sad.””

I forced a smile.

“I’m okay.””

She studied me.

“You promise?””

I nodded.

“I promise.””

She hugged me.

And in that moment, nothing else mattered.

Not blood.

Not secrets.

Not the people who had lied to me.

Because this little girl was my daughter.

No document could change that.

No DNA test.

No hidden truth.

Nothing.

But I also knew she deserved the truth one day.

The right truth.

Not the painful version adults had created around her.

Later that morning, I confronted Daniel again.

This time in my office.

“You need to tell me everything.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Why did Adrian disappear?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Because he knew Sophia was going to expose him.””

“Expose him for what?””

He opened a folder.

Inside were financial records.

Contracts.

Emails.

My company documents.

I scanned them.

Then I saw it.

Fraud.

Money transfers.

Hidden accounts.

My hands went cold.

“Adrian was stealing from us.””

Daniel nodded.

“Sophia discovered it.””

“And Amara?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Adrian wanted to use Sophia’s secret to control her.””

My expression hardened.

“Explain.””

“He threatened to reveal everything.””

“Why?””

“Because Sophia was the only person who could prove what he had done.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you?””

He looked ashamed.

“I found out too late.””

“Then why hide it?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because after Sophia died, I believed protecting Amara meant protecting the lie.””

I stared at him.

“You had no right.””

“I know.””

“You let me mourn a lie.””

“I know.””

“You let me raise my daughter without knowing the truth.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“I thought if you knew everything, you would lose her.””

I became quiet.

Because that fear was real.

Not because I would stop loving Amara.

But because the world around her had become dangerous.

That afternoon, Marcus entered my office with new information.

“Sir.””

I looked up.

“What happened?””

“We found Adrian Vale.””

My body went still.

“Where?””

“He’s been living under a different name.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“How long has he been hiding?””

“Eight years.””

Eight years.

The same amount of time since Sophia died.

“Where is he now?””

Marcus placed a file on my desk.

“Back in the city.””

I opened it.

A photograph stared back at me.

Adrian.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

Then I noticed something else.

A recent photograph.

Taken two days ago.

Adrian standing outside my mansion.

My blood turned cold.

“When was this taken?””

Marcus looked at the date.

“Yesterday.””

I stared at the image.

He had been watching us.

Watching Amara.

Watching me.

Then Marcus pointed to another detail.

“Sir.””

I looked closer.

Adrian wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was a woman.

A woman I recognized.

Victoria.

My stomach dropped.

“Impossible.””

Marcus remained silent.

Because the photograph showed the truth.

Victoria and Adrian weren’t strangers.

They weren’t enemies.

They were connected.

And then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

*“Ask Victoria why she chose you instead of me.””*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*“And ask her who Amara was supposed to belong to.””*

I looked toward the window.

Across the mansion, I could see Amara playing in the garden.

My daughter.

The little girl everyone had been fighting over.

And suddenly I understood.

This was never just about a hidden mother.

Or a false birth story.

Someone had been trying to control Amara’s life from the moment she entered this world.

May you like

And the person holding the final piece of the truth was the woman who had been living beside me all these years.

Victoria.
