Chapter 7: The Enemy Who Walked Through My Door
For seven years, I believed Adrian Cole was a ghost.
A name from my wife’s past.
A shadow that belonged to another life.
A man who had disappeared.
But now he was standing in my building.
In my company.
In the place I had built with my own hands.
And somehow, I knew this was not a coincidence.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
That bothered me.
Because if Daniel was working with Adrian, he should have expected this.
Unless he didn’t know everything either.
“Where is he?”” I asked Rachel.
“Lobby.””
“Alone?””
She nodded.
“He refused security escort.””
Of course.
A man like Adrian didn’t ask for permission.
He entered places like he already owned them.
I walked toward the door.
Daniel stood.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“What?””
His expression was serious.
“Be careful.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Because Adrian never shows up without a reason.””
I almost smiled.
“Interesting advice from someone who knew more about him than he told me.””
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
I left the office.
The elevator ride down felt longer than any meeting I had ever attended.
Every floor passing reminded me of everything I had built.
The company logo on the walls.
The employees working behind glass offices.
The people who believed I had complete control.
But I didn’t.
Not anymore.
When the elevator doors opened, I saw him.
Adrian Cole stood in the center of the lobby.
He looked exactly like the photographs.
Older now.
But still powerful.
A perfectly tailored dark suit.
Calm eyes.
A confident posture.
The kind of person who never looked nervous because he believed the world would move around him.
People nearby pretended not to stare.
But everyone was watching.
I walked toward him.
“You have some nerve coming here.””
Adrian smiled slightly.
“Hello, Marcus.””
I stopped several feet away.
“You know my name.””
“I know much more than your name.””
My jaw tightened.
“Where is Emily?””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
The mention of her mattered.
“She’s safe.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then prove it.””
Adrian looked around the lobby.
“Not here.””
“You don’t get to make demands.””
He smiled.
“There’s the Marcus I expected.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you finally stopped being the businessman.””
He stepped closer.
“Now you’re acting like a father.””
I hated that he was right.
Because every decision I made now was about Emily.
Not money.
Not power.
Not reputation.
My daughter.
“What do you want?””
Adrian looked directly into my eyes.
“The same thing I wanted seven years ago.””
I waited.
“The truth.””
I laughed.
“The truth?””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed my family.””
His face remained calm.
“No.””
“You threatened me.””
“No.””
“You called me and told me I was raising your daughter.””
“Because you deserve to know.””
I stepped closer.
“You had seven years to tell me.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
A flicker of anger appeared.
“You think I didn’t try?””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked away.
“Ask Vanessa.””
My stomach tightened.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
Before I could respond, Daniel appeared behind me.
“Adrian.””
The moment Adrian saw him, his expression became colder.
“Daniel.””
There was history between them.
A lot of it.
I looked between them.
“How do you two know each other?””
Neither answered.
That silence was an answer.
I turned toward Daniel.
“You told me you were there the night my father discovered the truth.””
Daniel nodded.
“I was.””
“And you know Adrian.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
“Because before I worked for you…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“I worked for him.””
The words landed like a punch.
The lobby noise disappeared.
“You worked for Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Three years.””
I stared at him.
Three years.
My closest friend.
My business partner.
A man who knew everything about my company.
Had worked for the man who had been haunting my family.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps using my father’s name.””
“Because he knew what was coming.””
Adrian spoke quietly.
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to talk about my father.””
“I knew Robert Whitmore better than you think.””
That angered me.
“My father hated you.””
Adrian smiled sadly.
“No.””
I frowned.
“He hated what I became.””
The answer surprised me.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked toward the windows.
“Your father and I were partners once.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
He knew this part.
“You never told me.””
“I couldn’t,” Daniel said.
“Why?””
“Because your father wanted you away from it.””
“From what?””
Nobody answered.
I felt anger building.
“I am done with secrets.””
My voice echoed through the lobby.
“Everyone keeps protecting me by lying to me.””
I looked at Adrian.
“Everyone.””
Adrian studied me.
Then said:
“You’re finally asking the right question.””
“What question?””
“Who benefits from you never knowing?””
The words stayed with me.
Because it was true.
Someone had spent years keeping me in the dark.
But why?
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know about Emily?””
His silence was immediate.
And painful.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Did you know she wasn’t mine?””
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
The betrayal felt different coming from him.
Vanessa was my wife.
She had her reasons.
Terrible reasons.
But Daniel?
He was my brother in everything but blood.
“You looked me in the eyes every day.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
Because maybe he knew.
Adrian watched silently.
Then he said:
“Your friend is not the only one who lied.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He reached into his jacket.
My security team immediately tensed.
But Adrian slowly removed an envelope.
He held it out.
“This is from Robert.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
“He wanted you to have it when you learned the truth.””
I didn’t take it.
“How do I know it’s real?””
“You don’t.””
His honesty surprised me.
“You read it.””
I slowly took the envelope.
My father’s handwriting was on the front.
Marcus.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
The letter was short.
Son,
If you are reading this, then the people around you have finally run out of places to hide.
I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.
But I was trying to protect you.
Not from Adrian.
From someone closer.
My breathing stopped.
Someone closer.
I continued reading.
The person who betrayed you is someone you trust completely.
Someone who has access to your home.
Your company.
Your private life.
My eyes moved to the final sentence.
And that was when my entire world shifted.
Because my father had written:
*The person who destroyed our family is not Adrian Cole.*
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
Daniel looked nervous.
“What else does it say?”” Adrian asked.
I folded the letter.
“You already know.””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
Adrian’s face became serious.
“The person who arranged everything…”
He paused.
“Was Vanessa’s closest ally.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at me.
And whispered a name.
A name I never expected.
A name that made no sense.
Because that person had been standing beside my family for years.
“Your mother.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
Adrian didn’t blink.
“I know what you believe.””
“My mother loved my father.””
“I know.””
“She loved Emily.””
“I know.””
“Then why would she do this?””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Because love and control can look very similar.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
He handed me another piece of paper.
A bank record.
A transaction.
A payment.
My eyes moved to the name.
The sender.
The receiver.
And the date.
The date was seven years ago.
The same week Emily was born.
The same week my entire life changed.
I looked at Adrian.
“What is this?””
His voice was quiet.
“The reason your father started investigating.””
I stared at the document.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
Only four words.
*Don’t trust Adrian.*
I looked up.
Adrian was watching me.
And suddenly I realized something terrifying.
Maybe Adrian was telling the truth.
Maybe he wasn’t the enemy.
May you like
Maybe the person I needed to fear…
Was someone I had been calling family my entire life.
