Amused

Chapter 6: The Enemy Inside My Empire

The message stayed on my phone screen.

*Ask yourself why Adrian knew your daughter existed before you did.*

I read it again.

And again.

Each time, the words felt heavier.

Someone wanted me to doubt everything.

My wife.

My family.

My company.

My entire life.

I looked around my mother’s living room.

The place where I spent my childhood.

The place where my father taught me honesty.

And somehow, even here, secrets had followed me.

“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered.

I looked up.

“What?””

She pointed at my phone.

“Who sent that?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because I was watching her face.

Looking for fear.

Guilt.

Anything.

But all I saw was confusion.

“I don’t know.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then her expression changed.

“What?””

I noticed immediately.

“You know something.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Mom.””

She looked away.

That was the same reaction everyone had when they were hiding something.

A pause.

A breath.

A decision.

I was tired of those moments.

“I’m done being the last person to know.””

My voice was calm.

But everyone heard the anger underneath.

Vanessa looked down.

My mother sat slowly on the couch.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

My mother had always been strong.

Proud.

The kind of person who never admitted mistakes.

But now she looked broken.

“Your father was investigating Adrian.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed Adrian was connected to something dangerous.””

“What kind of something?””

She looked at the floor.

“Business.””

I frowned.

“My father was a businessman. Everyone had enemies.””

“No.””

Her voice became serious.

“This was different.””

I stepped closer.

“What did he find?””

She hesitated.

“Your father believed Adrian wasn’t just trying to control Vanessa.””

“What was he trying to control?””

She looked at me.

“Your company.””

The room went quiet.

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded impossible.

“Adrian wanted my company?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father discovered something about a deal you made seven years ago.””

I froze.

Seven years.

The same amount of time Emily had been alive.

“What deal?””

My mother looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“The Whitmore acquisition.””

I stared at her.

That was one of the biggest deals of my career.

The deal that transformed my small company into a global business.

The deal that made me wealthy.

The deal everyone said changed my life.

“You’re saying Adrian was involved?””

“I’m saying your father thought he was.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My mother looked surprised.

“No?””

“That deal was clean.””

I remembered every meeting.

Every document.

Every signature.

It had been reviewed by lawyers, accountants, and executives.

There was no way.

“There has to be another explanation.””

My mother’s eyes softened.

“You sound exactly like your father.””

“What does that mean?””

“He also believed everything could be explained.””

She looked at the letter.

“Until he found something that couldn’t.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Emily was still asleep.

I lowered my voice.

“What did Dad find?””

My mother stood.

“Come with me.””

She walked toward the old study.

The room smelled like old books and wood.

My father’s room.

I hadn’t entered it since his funeral.

My mother opened a cabinet.

Behind several books was a small locked box.

I stared at it.

“You kept that all this time?””

She nodded.

“Your father told me never to open it unless something happened.””

“What something?””

She looked at me.

“Unless Adrian came back.””

My chest tightened.

“He knew?””

“He suspected.””

My mother handed me the key.

My fingers closed around it.

I opened the box.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Copies of emails.

And a folder with my company logo.

I picked it up.

The title made my blood run cold.

*Project Orion — Internal Investigation.*

I opened the folder.

The first page contained a list of names.

Executives.

Managers.

Employees.

People I knew.

People I trusted.

Then I saw one name.

My breath stopped.

I dropped the folder slightly.

Vanessa noticed.

“What is it?””

I looked at the page.

“No.””

My voice was barely audible.

“What?””

I looked again.

The name was still there.

A person I had trusted for years.

Someone who had stood beside me while building my company.

Someone who knew every weakness.

Every secret.

Every financial move.

My closest business partner.

Daniel Cross.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus?””

I closed the folder.

“Nothing.””

She stared at me.

“You’re lying.””

I looked at her.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“You spent years doing the same thing.””

Her face fell.

I immediately regretted the words.

But the damage was done.

Silence filled the room.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A familiar voice replied.

Adrian.

“You finally found the box.””

My body went still.

“How do you know about that?””

A quiet laugh.

“Because Robert Whitmore was predictable.””

My father’s name coming from his mouth made my blood boil.

“Don’t say my father’s name.””

“Why?””

Adrian’s voice remained calm.

“He was the only person who understood what was happening.””

“What happened?””

“You’re closer than you think, Marcus.””

“Where is Emily?””

A pause.

Then:

“She’s safe.””

My grip tightened.

“If you touched my daughter—”

“I didn’t.””

His voice became colder.

“But someone else might.””

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?””

“Ask Daniel.””

My heart dropped.

I looked at the folder.

Adrian continued.

“Your friend has been lying to you for years.””

“You expect me to believe you?””

“No.””

A pause.

“I expect you to investigate.””

The call ended.

I stood there, staring at the phone.

Vanessa watched me.

“Who was it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what scared me more.

That Adrian was lying.

Or that he wasn’t.

The next morning, I returned to my company headquarters.

For the first time in years, I walked through those doors feeling like a stranger.

Employees greeted me.

Assistants smiled.

Executives shook my hand.

Nobody knew.

Nobody knew my entire world had cracked open.

My office was on the top floor.

A place I built from nothing.

A place where I made decisions that affected thousands of people.

But that morning, I wasn’t thinking like a CEO.

I was thinking like a father.

And I was looking for whoever had threatened my family.

My assistant, Rachel, entered.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

I looked up.

“Yes?””

“Daniel is waiting for you.””

My expression changed.

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“He said it was urgent.””

Of course.

The timing was almost too perfect.

“Send him in.””

A minute later, Daniel walked through the door.

He was the same man I had known for fifteen years.

Same expensive suit.

Same confident smile.

Same handshake.

“Marcus.””

He smiled.

“I heard you had a family emergency.””

I studied him.

“How?””

His smile faded slightly.

“What?””

“How did you hear?””

A pause.

Small.

But I noticed.

“News travels.””

“Not that fast.””

Daniel sat down.

“Are we really doing this?””

“Doing what?””

“You’re looking at me like I’m your enemy.””

I leaned back.

“Should I?””

He laughed softly.

“After everything we built?””

I opened the folder.

Placed one document on the desk.

His eyes moved toward it.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

He recognized it.

“You know what this is.””

Daniel became quiet.

Then he looked at me.

“Where did you get that?””

Not denial.

Not confusion.

A question.

That was my answer.

“You were involved.””

His face hardened.

“Marcus.””

“Were you?””

He stood.

“This is not what you think.””

“Everyone says that right before the truth comes out.””

Daniel looked at the window.

Then back at me.

“Your father warned you.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

“He warned you because he knew you wouldn’t listen.””

My heart started racing.

“You knew my father?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Daniel.””

He sighed.

Then quietly said:

“I was there the night he discovered the truth.””

The room went cold.

“What truth?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the next words changed everything.

“Your father didn’t die naturally, Marcus.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with something I couldn’t identify.

Regret.

Fear.

Maybe both.

“He was killed.””

The world seemed to stop.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man whose secrets had started this nightmare.

Dead because someone wanted him silent.

“Who killed him?””

Daniel looked at the closed office door.

Then whispered:

“The same person who has been watching your family for seven years.””

I stood up.

“Who?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, my office door suddenly opened.

Rachel stood there, pale.

“Mr. Whitmore…”

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

Then at Daniel.

And whispered:

“There’s someone downstairs asking to see you.””

“Who?””

Her voice shook.

“Adrian Cole.””

My entire body went cold.

Because Adrian wasn’t supposed to be there.

May you like

And yet…

He had walked straight into my building.
