Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Who Never Left

The call ended.

But the voice stayed.

For several seconds, I stood frozen in the middle of my living room, staring at my phone screen as if the unknown number might appear again and explain everything.

It didn’t.

The silence that followed felt heavier than the call itself.

Across the room, Vanessa was watching me.

She already knew.

That was the part that terrified me most.

She wasn’t surprised.

She wasn’t asking who called.

She wasn’t demanding answers.

She looked like someone who had been waiting for a storm she knew was coming.

“Was that him?”” I asked.

Her lips parted slightly.

But she didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“That was Adrian.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

The name felt like a threat.

A shadow that had been standing outside our family for years.

“How did he get my number?””

Vanessa walked slowly toward the couch.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“Don’t lie to me.””

Her eyes flashed.

“I’m not lying.””

“You lied to me for seven years.””

The words landed between us.

She looked down.

And for the first time that night, she looked smaller.

Not like the confident woman who controlled every room she entered.

Just a person who had been carrying a secret for too long.

“I thought I could protect her,” she whispered.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“Protect her?””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“You let our daughter believe she had to hide things from me.””

Her face tightened.

“That wasn’t about Adrian.””

“No?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“It was because I knew you would leave.””

Those words stopped me.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“When you found out Emily wasn’t yours, I thought you would disappear.””

I stared at her.

“You thought I would abandon my daughter?””

“She wasn’t your daughter.””

My expression changed.

Vanessa immediately regretted saying it.

“I mean—”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

“You meant exactly what you said.””

She looked away.

“I was scared.””

“You were scared, so you let me live a lie?””

“I was scared because I knew how much you loved her.””

The room went silent.

Because that was the truth.

I did love her.

More than anything.

And maybe Vanessa knew that.

Maybe that was why she hid it.

But fear did not erase betrayal.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I wanted to.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted to trust the version of me that made you comfortable.””

She didn’t respond.

Because she knew I was right.

I looked toward the stairs.

Emily was upstairs.

Sleeping.

Probably thinking everything would be okay because Daddy was home.

But I knew something she didn’t.

The world she knew was about to change.

I walked toward the kitchen and placed my phone on the counter.

“Tell me everything.””

Vanessa remained silent.

“Now.””

She took a deep breath.

Then she sat down.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked exhausted.

“Before I met you, I was with Adrian.””

I leaned against the counter.

“How long?””

“Almost two years.””

“And Emily?””

“She was born after we separated.””

I frowned.

“You said he disappeared.””

“He did.””

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“Adrian wasn’t the kind of man who accepted losing control.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“When I told him I was pregnant, he wanted me to terminate the pregnancy.””

My expression hardened.

“He didn’t want her?””

“No.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said a child would ruin his plans.””

The anger inside me grew.

“And when you refused?””

“He threatened me.””

“What kind of threats?””

She looked at me.

“Enough that I believed him.””

The room became quiet.

I wanted to ask a hundred questions.

But one mattered more.

“Why me?””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“Why did you marry me?””

She looked hurt.

“Because I loved you.””

“After Adrian?””

“Yes.””

I studied her face.

There were things I didn’t believe.

But there were things I did.

I believed she had been afraid.

I believed Adrian was dangerous.

But I also believed she had made choices that hurt Emily.

Both things could exist.

“When did you find out he knew about Emily?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Three months ago.””

“The letter.””

She nodded.

“He sent it.””

“What did it say?””

“He wanted to meet.””

“Why?””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Because he found out Emily was alive.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“Someone told him.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I walked to the window.

Outside, the mansion grounds were dark.

The security lights illuminated the driveway.

Everything looked safe.

But I knew better now.

A wall and a gate couldn’t protect a family from secrets.

“What did you do after receiving the letter?””

Vanessa’s voice became quieter.

“I panicked.””

“And?””

“I told him Emily wasn’t available.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I told him she was not part of his life.””

I stared at her.

“You lied to him too.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to protect her.””

I looked away.

“And you thought making Emily clean floors would protect her?””

Her face changed.

Guilt appeared.

Real guilt.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s one way to say it.””

She accepted the criticism.

“I was angry.””

“At Emily?””

“No.””

She looked down.

“At myself.””

I didn’t answer.

Because for a moment, I saw something human in her.

Someone who had made terrible choices out of fear.

But then I remembered Emily’s hands.

The red skin.

The tears.

The way she asked if I would still be her father.

And my anger returned.

“You don’t get to call it protection when she suffers because of your fear.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I know.””

The confession surprised me.

She wiped her eyes.

“I know.””

Before I could respond, a sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Both of us looked toward the staircase.

“Emily?””

No answer.

I moved immediately.

I ran upstairs.

Her bedroom door was open.

The bed was empty.

My heart stopped.

“Emily!””

I searched the room.

The bathroom.

The closet.

Nothing.

Then I saw it.

The window was open.

A cold breeze moved the curtains.

“Vanessa!””

She rushed upstairs.

When she saw the empty room, her face turned white.

“No.””

“What?””

“She would never leave.””

“Then where is she?””

Vanessa looked around.

Then she noticed something on the bed.

A small piece of paper.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

It was written in a child’s handwriting.

Daddy,

I’m sorry.

I heard you and Mommy talking.

I know you’re upset.

I don’t want you to fight because of me.

I’m going to Grandma’s house.

I love you.

—Emily

I closed my eyes.

For one second, I couldn’t breathe.

My daughter thought she was the reason our family was falling apart.

Because of secrets adults created.

Because of mistakes she never made.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“This is what happened when you made her afraid.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t think she would—”

“You didn’t think.””

My voice cracked.

“That’s the problem.””

I grabbed my keys.

“I’m going to get her.””

Vanessa followed.

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“I’m her mother.””

“And I’m her father.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

But I meant them.

Vanessa looked at me.

Then she whispered:

“Marcus…”

I walked toward the door.

“I need to find my daughter.””

As I reached the entrance, my phone rang again.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

Silence.

Then Adrian’s voice returned.

Calm.

Confident.

“You still don’t understand, Marcus.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where is Emily?””

A pause.

Then:

“She came looking for the truth.””

My blood turned cold.

“What did you do?””

Another quiet laugh.

“I didn’t do anything.””

The voice lowered.

“But now that she’s found me…”

A long silence followed.

Then Adrian said the words that made my entire body freeze.

“You should know something.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“She wasn’t the only thing Vanessa kept from you.””

The call ended.

And standing in my doorway, I realized finding Emily was only the beginning.

May you like

Because Adrian Cole wasn’t just holding a secret about my daughter.

He was holding a secret about me.
