Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal

I arrived at Aurelia headquarters with Isabella beside me.

Not because I trusted her completely.

Not yet.

But because for the first time in days, I realized something important.

The people I thought were enemies weren’t always the ones holding the knife.

Sometimes the person standing closest was the one you should fear.

The elevator doors opened.

The executive floor was dark.

Too dark.

Normally, this floor was alive.

Assistants moving.

Phones ringing.

Employees rushing between meetings.

Now it was silent.

I stepped forward.

Then I saw him.

Adrian.

Standing in my office.

Looking out at the city.

“You always loved this view,” he said.

I didn’t answer.

“Your father did too.””

“What are you doing here?””

He turned around.

“I’m finishing what I started.””

Isabella stepped beside me.

Adrian looked at her.

“Interesting.””

“You knew she existed.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

He smiled.

“Because secrets are useful.””

I looked around.

“You broke into my company.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I returned to my company.””

Before I could respond, another person walked out.

My heart dropped.

Marcus Hill.

Our corporate representative.

The man who had helped investigate everything.

The man who stood beside me.

The man I trusted.

“You.””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.””

I felt something colder than anger.

Disappointment.

“You were the insider.””

He nodded.

Adrian smiled.

“Marcus was never loyal to you.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Careful.””

The confidence disappeared from Adrian’s face.

Interesting.

A crack.

A weakness.

I noticed.

“Why?”” I asked Marcus.

He looked at the floor.

“Because your father destroyed my family.””

Silence.

“What?””

“My father worked with Richard and Edward Bennett.””

He looked at Isabella.

“He was blamed for the original company conflict.””

I shook my head.

“So you helped Adrian for revenge?””

“Yes.””

“Even after seeing what he was doing?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Adrian stepped forward.

“You still don’t understand, Clara.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“You think this is about money.””

I looked at him.

“It isn’t?””

“It’s about recognition.””

The room became quiet.

“I gave your father everything.””

“You worked for him.””

“I built Aurelia.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You helped build it.””

His face tightened.

“And he gave it to you.””

There it was.

The wound.

The thing that had controlled him for years.

“I was there,” Adrian whispered.

“Every late night. Every deal. Every risk.””

I looked at him.

“And my father trusted you.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.””

He pointed at me.

“He trusted his daughter more than the person who sacrificed everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Adrian, you didn’t want the company because you loved it.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You wanted it because you believed it owed you something.””

For the first time, he had no response.

Then Isabella spoke.

“You know what’s sad?””

Everyone looked at her.

“You spent your entire life trying to prove you deserved what others had.””

She looked at Adrian.

“And you never realized you destroyed the one thing that could have made you worthy.””

His face changed.

The words landed.

Then alarms started ringing.

Adrian looked confused.

“What?””

The office doors opened.

Security entered.

Behind them was Olivia.

And the police.

Adrian stared.

“How?””

Olivia smiled slightly.

“You were so focused on controlling the company that you forgot the company controls everything you do inside it.””

She held up a tablet.

“Every file transfer. Every access point. Every conversation.””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

“You said—”

“I lied.””

Marcus looked away.

“I was trying to help expose you.””

The realization hit Adrian.

He wasn’t surrounded by enemies.

He was surrounded by witnesses.

Security moved toward him.

But before they took him away, Adrian looked at me.

“Your father knew.””

I froze.

“Knew what?””

His smile returned.

Small.

Cold.

“That one day you would have to choose.””

“Choose what?””

He looked at Isabella.

Then at me.

“Whether to keep the company…”

A pause.

“Or save the family.””

The doors closed behind him.

I stood there.

Because I knew Adrian was right about one thing.

The final decision wasn’t about ownership.

It was about legacy.

The next morning, the board gathered.

And I walked into the room with Isabella beside me.

The final vote began.

But before the chairman could speak, Olivia entered.

Her face was pale.

“Clara.””

“What happened?””

She handed me a document.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

Then I looked up.

“No.””

Isabella looked concerned.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the document revealed the final secret my father had hidden.

The company I thought I owned…

was never actually mine.
