Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Richard Bennett.

My father’s older brother.

My uncle.

A man whose name had been erased from every family conversation I ever heard.

I grew up believing he died before I was born.

A tragic accident.

A closed chapter.

A person nobody wanted to discuss.

But now his name was sitting inside a secret file connected to Adrian Cole.

I spent the entire night reading every document Olivia sent me.

The more I learned, the less I recognized the company I had built.

Richard had helped my father create Aurelia Retail Group.

Then, suddenly, he vanished.

No public records.

No announcements.

No explanation.

Just gone.

At 6:00 a.m., I received a message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“You’re looking in the wrong direction.””

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

“Meet me if you want the truth.””

A location followed.

An abandoned private club outside the city.

I showed Olivia.

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“No?””

“Clara, this is exactly what dangerous people do. They isolate you.””

I smiled slightly.

“You sound like my mother.””

“She’s usually right.””

That was annoying.

Because she was.

But I also knew something else.

People who hide secrets always believe they control the timing.

Sometimes the only way to break that control was to walk straight into the room.

“I’m going.””

Olivia sighed.

“Then I’m coming with you.””

The building looked abandoned from the outside.

Broken windows.

Old signs.

A place forgotten by everyone.

Except someone who wanted to be found.

Inside, the air smelled like dust and old wood.

A man stood near the back wall.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar across his hand.

But alive.

My heart stopped.

“Richard Bennett.””

He smiled sadly.

“So Eleanor finally told you.””

I stepped forward.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because disappearing was the only way I survived.””

I stared at him.

“You were involved with Adrian.””

“No.””

“Your name is in his files.””

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Richard walked toward an old table.

“Your father and I built Aurelia together.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

He placed a folder down.

“Your father built the company.””

He tapped the folder.

“I built the protection around it.””

I opened it.

Inside were old contracts.

Ownership agreements.

And something else.

A photograph.

My father.

Richard.

And Adrian.

Young.

Smiling.

I looked at Adrian’s face.

“He was there from the beginning.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he betray us?””

Richard looked away.

“Because he thought your father stole something from him.””

“What?””

Richard took a breath.

“The company.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you know the truth.””

He opened another document.

“Before Aurelia existed, your father and I made a promise.””

I read the agreement.

Two founders.

Equal ownership.

Until one condition.

My eyes moved down.

“The successor would inherit control.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your father.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

“Because he had the vision.””

I closed the document.

“So Adrian believed he deserved it.””

Richard nodded.

“He believed your father chose blood over loyalty.””

I thought about Adrian.

The resentment.

The anger.

The way he said:

“You think you’re different because you wear simple clothes.””

He wasn’t just greedy.

He was hurt.

But hurt didn’t excuse betrayal.

“What happened between you and my father?””

Richard’s face changed.

“I found out Adrian was planning something.””

“The takeover?””

“Something bigger.””

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“He wanted to destroy Aurelia and rebuild it under a new name.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Why?””

“Because he believed if he couldn’t inherit your father’s legacy…”

Richard paused.

“He would erase it.””

A noise came from outside.

Footsteps.

Olivia looked toward the entrance.

“We’re not alone.””

The lights flickered.

Then a voice echoed through the building.

“Still asking questions, Clara?””

I froze.

Adrian stepped into the room.

But he wasn’t alone.

Two men stood behind him.

He looked different.

Not confident.

Desperate.

“You should have stayed away.””

I stared at him.

“You’re afraid.””

He laughed.

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

I stepped closer.

“Because you know you lost.””

His expression hardened.

“No.””

He looked at Richard.

Then at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

He smiled.

“The reason your father chose you wasn’t because he trusted you.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“Then why?””

Adrian reached into his coat.

He pulled out a document.

Then he placed it on the table.

A birth certificate.

My heart stopped.

Because the name printed on it wasn’t mine.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone connected to Aurelia.

Someone connected to my father.

May you like

Adrian whispered:

“You were never the only heir.””
