Chapter 4: The Secret My Father Left Behind
I stared at the signature for nearly a minute.
It didn’t make sense.
My father had been gone for eight years.
He had never owned shares in Aurelia Retail Group.
At least, that was what I believed.
“Olivia,” I said quietly.
“Yes?””
“Find every document connected to my father.””
She hesitated.
“Clara…”
“Everything.””
She nodded.
That night, I returned to the old family house.
The place looked exactly the same.
The wooden floors still creaked.
The small kitchen still smelled faintly like coffee.
My father’s old watch repair tools were still sitting in the corner.
I opened the drawer where I kept his belongings.
At the bottom was the note he left me.
Never measure a person by what they own. Measure them by what they protect.
I turned it over.
Nothing.
Then I remembered something.
The old watch.
The one he gave me before he died.
I picked it up.
There was something strange about the back.
A tiny engraving I had never noticed.
A symbol.
The same symbol used by Aurelia Retail Group.
My breath caught.
The next morning, Olivia arrived with an old file.
“Your father was involved in the company before you.””
I looked through the papers.
“He was an investor?””
“More than that.””
She placed another document down.
“He helped create the original ownership structure.””
I looked up.
“Why would he hide this?””
Olivia didn’t answer.
Because neither of us knew.
Then the board meeting began.
Adrian entered confidently.
Vivian followed him.
Of course she did.
She wore a black designer suit and a smile that suggested she had already won.
“Clara,” Vivian said.
“I hope you enjoyed your final day in control.””
I looked at her.
“You really believe that?””
She smiled.
“I don’t believe. I know.””
The board members took their seats.
Adrian presented his case.
He talked about stability.
Growth.
Leadership.
All the words people use when they want to make greed sound professional.
Then Vivian spoke.
“She has emotional attachments that cloud her decisions.””
I almost laughed.
The woman who tried to remove me from my own store was accusing me of poor judgment.
Then Adrian placed the ownership documents on the table.
“The controlling shares belong to the Bennett family trust.””
He looked at me.
“And based on the transfer completed last night, leadership authority is no longer solely Clara Bennett’s.””
The board members looked shocked.
I remained silent.
Because I wanted to know how far he would go.
Then the chairman opened the document.
His expression changed.
“Adrian.””
“Yes?””
“Where did you get this?””
“From the legal department.””
The chairman looked at me.
“Clara, did you authorize this transfer?””
“No.””
A long silence followed.
Then the chairman turned the page.
And smiled.
Not at Adrian.
At me.
“Because this document is not valid.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
The chairman held up the paper.
“This signature was copied.””
Vivian’s face changed.
“What?””
The chairman continued.
“Your mistake was assuming Mr. Bennett’s records were incomplete.””
I looked at Adrian.
He suddenly looked less confident.
The chairman opened another folder.
“Your father created a protection clause.””
I stepped forward.
“What kind of clause?””
The chairman looked directly at me.
“A clause preventing anyone from taking control of Aurelia Retail Group through manipulation or deception.””
Adrian’s face went white.
Then the chairman said the words nobody expected.
“The person who inherits full authority is not the person with the most shares.””
He looked at me.
“It is the person your father named as the true guardian of this company.””
The room went silent.
Vivian whispered:
“Who?””
The chairman smiled.
“You’re looking at her.””
I felt every eye turn toward me.
But before I could speak, Adrian’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Then his entire expression collapsed.
“What is it?”” Vivian demanded.
Adrian slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s my bank.””
“And?””
His voice barely came out.
“They froze my accounts.””
Nobody moved.
Then another phone rang.
Then another.
Every executive in the room looked down.
Something bigger was happening.
Something Adrian didn’t expect.
And then Olivia received a message.
She read it.
Her face changed.
“Clara…”
“What?””
She looked at me.
“The person who exposed Adrian just sent another message.””
I stepped closer.
“Who sent it?””
Olivia swallowed.
Then she turned the phone around.
May you like
The name on the screen was:
“Eleanor Bennett.””
