Amused

Chapter 8: The Hidden Heir

I couldn’t move.

The document sat between us like a weapon.

A single piece of paper had the power to rewrite my entire life.

“You’re lying.””

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

Adrian smiled.

“That’s exactly what your father wanted you to believe.””

I looked at Richard.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

That scared me more than Adrian’s words.

“Richard.””

Silence.

“Tell me.””

He slowly looked up.

“I didn’t know.””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t know?””

“No.””

Adrian laughed.

“Everyone was kept in the dark.””

I grabbed the document.

The name was clear.

A person I had never heard of.

A person who carried the Bennett family name.

My hands shook.

“Who is this?””

Adrian leaned closer.

“Your father’s daughter.””

The room went silent.

My mind rejected the words.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

I looked at Olivia.

She looked just as shocked.

My father had another child.

A secret.

A hidden heir.

Everything I believed about my family cracked open.

Adrian watched my reaction carefully.

“That’s why your father created the guardian clause.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“He knew if the truth came out too early, the company would collapse.””

Richard spoke quietly.

“Adrian…”

But Adrian continued.

“He didn’t trust you with the truth.””

That sentence hurt.

More than I wanted to admit.

Because my entire life, I believed my father chose me because he believed in me.

Now I wondered if he chose me because there was nobody else.

I walked away from the table.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

“Where is she?””

Adrian smiled.

“Finally asking the right question.””

I turned around.

“Tell me.””

“She’s closer than you think.””

My phone rang.

Olivia answered it.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“Clara…”

“What?””

She lowered the phone.

“The person who filed the legal challenge against your ownership.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She whispered the name.

“Isabella Bennett.””

The world seemed to stop.

Because that name appeared everywhere.

On the documents.

On the news.

On the lawsuit.

I just never knew who she was.

I had been fighting an enemy I didn’t understand.

And now I knew why.

She wasn’t trying to destroy Aurelia.

She was trying to claim what she believed was hers.

Three days later, I met Isabella.

She chose a quiet restaurant.

No cameras.

No lawyers.

Just two women sitting across from each other.

She looked nothing like me.

Dark hair.

Different eyes.

A different energy.

But there was something familiar.

Maybe the way she held herself.

Maybe the sadness.

“You hate me,” she said.

I looked at her.

“I don’t know you.””

She smiled sadly.

“That’s the problem.””

I stayed silent.

“My entire life, I knew about you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“My father told me everything.””

“Your father?””

She looked down.

“Richard.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked up.

“Richard Bennett is my father.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I was trapped inside someone else’s story.

“So you’re saying…”

“I’m the hidden heir.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because they were protecting you.””

I laughed softly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Her expression hardened.

“Because it’s true.””

She leaned forward.

“You think you were abandoned?””

I said nothing.

“I was.””

The words hit harder than expected.

“My mother died when I was young. Richard disappeared. Your father helped me financially but never publicly acknowledged me.””

“Why?””

“Because if people knew I existed, Adrian would come after me too.””

I looked away.

For the first time, I saw the difference.

Isabella wasn’t like Adrian.

She wasn’t trying to steal.

She was trying to understand why she had been erased.

“What do you want?””

She answered immediately.

“The truth.””

I believed her.

Then she placed something on the table.

A recording.

“Your father left this for me.””

I pressed play.

His voice filled the room.

“Isabella, if you are hearing this, then I failed to protect both of my children.””

My breath caught.

Both.

“My children.””

The recording continued.

“You both deserve the truth. Aurelia was never meant to belong to one person.””

I looked at Isabella.

“It was meant to belong to the people who could protect it.””

The recording ended.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Olivia.

I answered.

“Clara.””

Her voice was urgent.

“We found Adrian.””

“Where?””

“He’s at Aurelia headquarters.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“He accessed the executive floor.””

“That’s impossible.””

A pause.

Then:

“He has someone helping him.””

I stood.

“Who?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Someone from inside the company.””

“Who?””

May you like

Her answer came quietly.

“The person who has been approving his moves since the beginning.””
