Chapter 4: The Name on the Account
Dad read Marcus's message three times.
I stood halfway up the stairs, one hand wrapped around the banister, watching his expression change with every second.
Vanessa remained beside the kitchen counter. Her fingers were curled around its edge so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
"Who is it?"" she asked.
Dad didn't answer.
"Daniel, I'm talking to you.""
He lifted his eyes from the screen.
"You said you could explain the transfers.""
"I can.""
"Then start explaining.""
Vanessa glanced toward me.
"Not in front of Emily.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"Emily is the person whose money you took. She's already been dragged into this whether you like it or not.""
"But she's sixteen!""
"And she's old enough to know when someone has stolen from her.""
Vanessa flinched as if he'd slapped her.
I came down the remaining stairs.
"I want to know, too.""
Dad looked at me, then nodded.
He placed his phone on the kitchen island and opened the message again.
The screen showed a spreadsheet with dates, amounts, transaction references, and the names of receiving institutions. One account number had been highlighted.
Beside it was a name.
*Richard Carter.*
My father's older brother.
I frowned.
"Uncle Richard?""
Dad went completely still.
Richard was the last person I would have expected to see connected to any of this.
He was fifty-two, divorced, and lived in a large house in Frisco. He'd attended my mother's funeral and held my hand when I was nine and couldn't stop crying. He'd brought Dad coffee during the first terrible months after she died and helped him keep his business running when grief made even ordinary decisions difficult.
He'd also been the person who gave me a secondhand bicycle when I was twelve and spent an entire Saturday teaching me how to ride it.
Uncle Richard wasn't around every week, but whenever he visited, he remembered my favorite candy and asked about my grades.
He had always seemed safe.
"Why would Uncle Richard have the money?"" I whispered.
Dad didn't answer immediately.
He picked up his phone and called Marcus.
"Tell me exactly what you've confirmed.""
Marcus's voice was faint through the speaker.
"We've verified the receiving account belongs to Richard Carter. Several transfers from the reserve account were routed there through Northstar Digital Services. We're still checking the full trail.""
"How much?""
"The transactions we identified total $68,400. There may be additional transfers.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I stared at Dad.
"Sixty-eight thousand?""
"Emily, go upstairs for a moment," Dad said gently.
"No. Please. I need to understand.""
He hesitated, then pulled out a chair for me.
"Sit down, sweetheart.""
I sat.
Dad continued speaking to Marcus.
"Have you contacted Richard?""
"Not yet. I wanted you to see the records first. The company authorization logs show activity that needs further review, and I don't want anyone altering anything.""
"Good. Preserve everything. Don't accuse anyone until we have the complete records.""
He ended the call.
Vanessa immediately stepped toward him.
"Richard has nothing to do with this.""
Dad looked at her.
"How do you know?""
She opened her mouth, then closed it.
"You told me the receiving account wasn't yours," he continued.
"Now you're telling me you know it belongs to my brother. How?""
"I've met Richard, Daniel. Of course I know his name.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Vanessa rubbed her forehead.
"Richard was helping me with some financial arrangements.""
"What arrangements?""
She glanced at the staircase again.
Dad followed her gaze.
"Stop looking at Emily as though she's the problem.""
"I'm trying to protect this family!""
"From what? The truth?""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"You don't understand how difficult things have been for me.""
"Then explain them.""
She pulled out a chair and sat down, suddenly looking exhausted.
"Richard came to me several months ago. He said the company had opportunities for expansion and that there were ways to move money temporarily without affecting operations. He said you'd approved similar arrangements before.""
Dad stared at her.
"Did he show you written authorization?""
"No.""
"Did you ask me?""
She shook her head.
"Then why did you believe him?""
"Because he's your brother!""
The words burst out of her.
For the first time that evening, her anger seemed genuine rather than calculated.
"You've trusted him your entire life. He helped you build the company. He introduced you to suppliers. He was the one who told me how to organize the household finances when I first married you.""
Dad's face became unreadable.
"Richard has helped me with the business, yes. That doesn't mean he has permission to move money whenever he wants.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He said the transfers were temporary. He said there was a cash-flow issue with a project and that the money would be returned before the quarterly review.""
"And you believed him?""
"I wanted to believe him!""
Dad leaned forward.
"Did you authorize those transfers?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I entered some verification codes.""
The admission landed like a dropped plate.
I felt my stomach twist.
"You told me you didn't know anything about the transfers," Dad said.
"I panicked!""
"You lied to me.""
"I was trying to fix it before you noticed.""
Dad stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the sky over the Dallas suburbs had turned dark. A porch light flickered on across the street, illuminating a parked SUV and a patch of neatly trimmed grass.
Inside our house, everything felt unfamiliar.
Dad turned around.
"Why did you take Emily's money?""
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
"Richard told me I needed to contribute something of my own if I wanted to be included in the next arrangement.""
"What arrangement?""
"He said he could make a significant return on the money. He told me I could use some of it to pay for things around the house, and the rest would be returned with interest.""
Dad's voice became colder.
"So you gave him money from Emily's account.""
"I thought I'd replace it before she noticed.""
"You thought you'd steal from a sixteen-year-old and gamble that you'd earn enough to cover it?""
"I wasn't gambling!""
"What would you call it?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
"I thought it was an investment.""
I looked at the MacBook on the kitchen island.
Its silver surface reflected the overhead lights.
"Was Mia's computer part of your investment?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
"No.""
"Then why did you use my money?""
She had no answer.
I stood.
"You could have asked me.""
"Emily—"
"You could have told me you needed help. You could have asked Dad. You could have sold something. You could have done anything other than take the money I worked for.""
Tears ran down my face again, but I didn't wipe them away.
"You watched me work every weekend. You knew I was saving for college. You knew how much it mattered to me.""
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I never meant to hurt you.""
"But you didn't care enough to stop.""
She looked up sharply.
For a moment, I thought she would yell at me.
Instead, she began crying.
It was the first time I'd seen her cry without an audience she was trying to impress.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I stared at her.
The apology felt too small for what she'd done.
Dad returned to the table.
"An apology doesn't resolve this. The money needs to be recovered, and we need to determine the full extent of what happened.""
Vanessa nodded quickly.
"I can call Richard. I'll make him explain everything.""
"No," Dad said.
"We aren't going to coordinate stories or give anyone an opportunity to alter records. The bank and our accountant will handle the verification.""
"But he's your brother.""
"That is precisely why I need facts before I speak to him.""
Dad took his phone and stepped into his office.
Vanessa remained seated.
I watched her stare at the new MacBook.
For the first time, the computer looked less like a prize and more like evidence.
I went upstairs, shut my bedroom door, and opened my college savings account again.
The balance remained $12.67.
I refreshed the screen.
Nothing changed.
I opened the folder where I kept my pay stubs, school awards, and college brochures. Inside was a printed budget I'd made the previous summer, listing how much I hoped to save before graduation.
I'd calculated everything.
Tuition.
Books.
Transportation.
Application fees.
I had even included the cost of a used laptop because I didn't want Dad to have to pay for one.
My eyes landed on a note I'd written beneath the total.
If I work hard enough, I can give myself a choice.
I sat on the floor and cried into my hands.
A knock sounded at the door.
"Emily?""
Dad's voice.
I wiped my cheeks and opened it.
He stood in the hallway holding a glass of water.
"Can I come in?""
I nodded.
He sat beside me on the edge of the bed.
For a few moments, neither of us spoke.
Then he said, "I need you to understand something. None of this is your fault.""
I stared at the carpet.
"But if I hadn't called you, you might never have checked the account.""
"That's not your responsibility.""
"What if the money doesn't come back?""
Dad's expression softened.
"Then we'll pursue every lawful way to recover it. I'll help you protect your education, and we'll make sure you aren't left alone to deal with this.""
"But I wanted to do it myself.""
"I know.""
He reached for my hand.
"And I am proud of you for trying.""
My throat tightened.
"Do you think Uncle Richard stole from you?""
Dad looked toward the closed door.
"I think the records raise serious questions. I won't pretend to know more than we've verified.""
"Could Vanessa be telling the truth?""
"Some of what she said may be true. Some may not be. We'll establish that through evidence.""
He paused.
"But I can tell you this: nobody had the right to take your savings without permission.""
I leaned against his shoulder.
For a few minutes, I let myself be sixteen again.
Not the girl who needed to gather transaction records or understand corporate banking.
Just a daughter sitting beside her father, wishing the world were simpler.
Then Dad's phone rang.
He checked the screen.
It was Marcus.
"Give me a second, sweetheart.""
He answered.
"What's happened?""
He listened.
Then he straightened.
"You're certain?""
Another pause.
"Send me the original authorization records.""
His eyes shifted toward me.
"What do you mean the account was accessed from inside our house?""
My breath caught.
Dad listened for several more seconds before ending the call.
I sat upright.
"What did Marcus find?""
Dad looked at me.
"The bank has confirmed that at least one of the corporate transfers was approved using a device connected to our home network.""
He paused.
"And it wasn't Richard's device.""
My heart began pounding.
"Then whose was it?""
Dad looked down at his phone.
Before he could answer, someone downstairs slammed a door.
We both turned toward the hallway.
A moment later, we heard Vanessa's voice.
"Richard? You need to come over. Right now.""
Dad rose so quickly that the glass of water nearly toppled from the bedside table.
He opened my bedroom door.
"Stay here.""
"But, Dad—"
"Please, Emily.""
He walked toward the stairs.
I followed him anyway, stopping just out of sight at the landing.
Downstairs, Vanessa stood in the entryway with her phone pressed to her ear.
Her voice was shaking.
"I don't care what you told me. Daniel knows about the account.""
She listened.
Then her face crumpled.
"No, you don't understand. He has the records.""
Another pause.
"Richard, you promised me nobody would find out.""
Dad stepped into the hallway.
Vanessa spun around.
Her phone slipped in her hand.
For several seconds, the three of us stood motionless.
Then Dad held out his hand.
"Put the call on speaker, Vanessa.""
She stared at him.
"Daniel—"
"Now.""
Her fingers trembled as she touched the screen.
A man's voice filled the entryway.
"Vanessa? What's going on? I told you not to call me unless—"
He stopped.
Perhaps he heard the silence.
Perhaps he realized someone else was listening.
Then my uncle spoke again, his voice suddenly sharp.
"Vanessa, is Daniel there?""
Dad stepped closer to the phone.
"Yes, Richard.""
A long silence followed.
Then my uncle said something that made my stepmother close her eyes.
"Daniel, before you do anything, you need to understand that Vanessa wasn't the one who came up with the plan.""
Dad's expression turned to stone.
"What plan?""
Richard exhaled.
"The money was supposed to be transferred back tomorrow.""
"How much money?""
Silence.
Dad's voice rose.
"Richard, how much money did you take from my company?""
My uncle answered with five words.
May you like
And every one of them changed everything.
"Not nearly as much as Vanessa.""
