Amused

Chapter 3: The Money She Couldn't Explain

Vanessa didn't sit for long.

The moment Dad mentioned his corporate reserve account, she stood so abruptly that her chair scraped backward across the floor.

"This is unbelievable," she said.

"I come home every day, take care of this house, make sure your daughter has everything she needs, and now you're accusing me of stealing from your company?""

Dad remained seated.

"I'm asking whether you moved money from an account that requires my authorization.""

"And I'm telling you that I don't know what you're talking about!""

"Then sit down and help me understand.""

"I will not be interrogated in my own home.""

Dad looked around the living room.

The expensive sofa. The framed vacation photographs. The glass coffee table Vanessa had chosen because she said it made the room look like something from a magazine.

Then he looked back at her.

"Our home," he said.

"And right now, I'm trying to understand why money is disappearing from accounts I am responsible for.""

Vanessa's nostrils flared.

"You always do this.""

"Do what?""

"Make everything about money! If I buy something nice, you ask how much it costs. If Mia needs something, you question whether it's necessary. If I try to make this family comfortable, you treat me like I'm wasting your precious company profits.""

Dad placed his phone on the table.

"Your comfort has never been the issue.""

"Then what is?""

"Honesty.""

The word hung between them.

I remained at the edge of the hallway, gripping the banister.

Part of me wanted to go upstairs and shut my door. I didn't want to witness another argument. I'd already spent the afternoon crying over my savings.

But another part of me needed to know what Dad had discovered.

Vanessa had taken $2,327.33 from me.

If she'd done something similar to Dad, I wanted to understand how far it went.

Dad picked up his phone again.

"On Monday, $4,800 left the reserve account. On Tuesday, another $6,200. Yesterday, there was a transfer for $8,500.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"Those could be ordinary business expenses.""

"They could be. That's why I'm checking.""

"Then check your records instead of accusing me!""

"I am checking my records.""

Dad opened a spreadsheet and began comparing transactions.

He worked quickly, his expression growing darker with every swipe.

"These payments weren't made to our regular vendors.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Maybe you don't recognize the companies.""

"I built this business from the ground up. I recognize our vendors.""

"Well, excuse me for not memorizing every company you deal with.""

"Then you'll have no trouble explaining why several payments were routed through an account that isn't on our approved vendor list.""

She laughed, but it sounded forced.

"You're being ridiculous.""

Dad turned his phone around.

"Look at this.""

Vanessa didn't move.

He pointed to a transaction.

"Thirty-two hundred dollars. Then another payment for forty-one hundred. Both sent to a company called Northstar Digital Services.""

She swallowed.

"What about it?""

"Do you know that company?""

"No.""

"Have you ever heard of it?""

"I just told you I haven't.""

Dad tapped the screen.

"Because it was registered three months ago, and its mailing address is a private mailbox in Plano.""

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward the kitchen.

It was a tiny movement, almost invisible.

But Dad noticed.

"So you do know something.""

"I looked away because I'm tired of this conversation!""

"Vanessa, I need you to be honest with me.""

"I am being honest!""

Her voice rose so sharply that Mia appeared in the doorway, still holding her new MacBook.

"Mom? What's going on?""

Vanessa turned toward her daughter.

"Nothing. Go upstairs.""

"But Dad looks—"

"Go. Upstairs.""

Mia flinched.

For once, she didn't argue. She clutched the laptop against her chest and disappeared down the hall.

Dad waited until her footsteps faded.

Then he picked up his phone and called someone.

"Marcus? It's Daniel. I need you to check a series of transactions from the corporate reserve account.

I'll send you the reference numbers. No, all of them. I want the receiving accounts verified, and I want the authorization records preserved.""

Vanessa's face tightened.

"Who are you calling?""

"Our accountant.""

"You don't need to involve Marcus.""

Dad ignored her.

"Also, freeze any further outgoing transfers until we've confirmed what's legitimate. Yes, immediately.""

He ended the call.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You froze the account?""

"Only outgoing transfers pending review.""

"Daniel, that account pays company expenses!""

"Then legitimate expenses can be reviewed and handled properly.""

"What about payroll?""

"Payroll has its own operating account.""

She looked stunned.

I realized then that she had expected the mention of the corporate account to make Dad panic.

Instead, he had separated the problem into pieces and started checking each one.

It was what he did at work.

It was also what he'd taught me to do whenever a problem felt too large to handle.

Start with what you know.

Find the evidence.

Don't guess.

Dad returned his attention to the phone.

"Vanessa, I need you to tell me whether you authorized any of these transfers.""

She shook her head.

"I don't know how many times I have to say no.""

"Then perhaps the bank can clarify how the approvals were recorded.""

He opened another screen.

"These transfers required my authorization. Some were approved through the business portal, and some appear to have used a secondary verification method.""

Vanessa stared at the phone.

"I don't have access to your business portal.""

Dad looked up.

"That's an interesting answer.""

"Why?""

"Because the system shows that the verification messages were sent to the phone number ending in 4812.""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then closed.

Dad slowly set the phone on the table.

"That's your number.""

She shook her head.

"Lots of things are connected to my number. You asked me to help organize the company calendar. Maybe the bank had my information from that.""

"Did you approve the transfers?""

"No!""

"Did you receive verification codes for them?""

"I don't remember!""

"Did you enter any of those codes?""

Vanessa's eyes shone with angry tears.

"How dare you talk to me like I'm some criminal?""

Dad's expression didn't change.

"I'm asking you direct questions about company money. Answer them.""

She pressed both hands against her chest.

"I have given everything to this family. I gave up so much when I married you. I took care of Emily when you were traveling.

I made sure Mia had a good life. I managed this house while you were building your business. And now you sit here and treat me like a thief because your daughter can't handle a little disappointment?""

I felt something hot rise in my throat.

A little disappointment.

My college fund had been reduced to the price of a cheap lunch.

Dad stood.

"Don't use Emily to distract me from the questions I'm asking you.""

"I'm not distracting you!""

"You took money from her account.""

"I moved it!""

"Without her permission.""

"She is a member of this family!""

"So are you. That doesn't give you ownership of her paycheck.""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Fine. I'll give her the money back.""

"With what money?""

She hesitated.

Dad pointed to the MacBook on the kitchen island.

"Did you use the money from Emily's account to purchase that computer?""

Vanessa glanced at it.

"Yes.""

"Then we'll preserve the receipt, return it if possible, and make sure Emily gets her savings back.""

Mia reappeared in the hallway.

"You're returning my laptop?""

Her voice sounded small.

Vanessa immediately turned toward her.

"Nobody is taking anything from you.""

"But Dad said—"

"Your father is upset. He doesn't understand what happened.""

Dad looked at Mia.

"Mia, did you know Emily's savings were used to pay for your computer?""

Mia's face reddened.

"I thought Mom had money.""

"Did you know it was Emily's money?""

She looked down at the laptop.

"No.""

I wanted to believe her.

I really did.

But the memory of her sitting beside Vanessa that afternoon, peeling the sticker off her new computer while I stood there crying, made it difficult.

Dad softened his voice.

"All right. Go upstairs for now. We'll discuss the computer after we understand everything.""

Mia nodded and retreated.

Vanessa watched her go.

Then she turned back to Dad.

"You've embarrassed her enough.""

"She isn't the person I'm investigating.""

The word investigating seemed to frighten Vanessa more than anything else he'd said.

She sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked less like the woman who controlled every conversation in our house and more like someone who had run out of prepared answers.

Dad's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

A message from Marcus, our accountant.

Dad read it once.

Then again.

His expression went completely still.

"What?"" Vanessa whispered.

He didn't answer.

He opened an attached document and scrolled through a list of payments.

I stepped closer.

"What is it, Dad?""

He looked at me, and for a moment I saw something that frightened me more than his anger.

Disbelief.

"Marcus has confirmed that several transfers went to an account that isn't registered to one of our vendors.""

Vanessa stood again.

"That doesn't prove anything.""

Dad continued reading.

"He's also found an electronic authorization tied to a device registered in this household.""

The room became so quiet that I could hear the faint ticking of the clock above the fireplace.

Dad looked directly at Vanessa.

"Do you want to tell me whose device it is before I ask the bank to identify it?""

She stared at him.

Her lips parted, but no words came out.

Then Dad's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

I watched his face as he listened.

First, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Finally, a cold, terrifying certainty.

"You're telling me the account wasn't just used for transfers?"" he asked.

He listened again.

"How long has this been happening?""

Vanessa backed toward the kitchen.

Dad lifted one hand, silently signaling her to stay where she was.

"No," he said into the phone.

"Don't change anything. Preserve every record. I'll be there first thing tomorrow morning.""

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"You didn't just move money from my corporate reserve account.""

Her face had gone deathly pale.

Dad's voice dropped to a whisper.

"You used the company account to make payments that were deliberately disguised as legitimate business expenses.""

Vanessa shook her head frantically.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

"I was going to fix everything!""

Dad stared at her.

"Fix what?""

She looked toward the stairs, then at the front door, as if calculating how quickly she could leave.

Finally, she whispered, "It wasn't supposed to become this big.""

My stomach dropped.

Dad stepped closer.

"How much money did you take, Vanessa?""

She said nothing.

"How much?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I can explain the transfers from Emily's account.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She gripped the edge of the counter.

"I can pay her back.""

"With what?""

Vanessa looked at him helplessly.

Dad took out his phone again.

"I want the bank to preserve every authorization record. And tomorrow, we're going to find out exactly where that money went.""

Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.

Then she said something so quietly that I almost missed it.

"Daniel, if you contact the police, you'll destroy this family.""

Dad didn't raise his voice.

"No, Vanessa. If you've done what these records suggest, you did that yourself.""

He turned toward the hallway.

"Emily, sweetheart, go upstairs. I need to make a few more calls.""

I obeyed, but halfway up the stairs, I heard Vanessa speak again.

"Daniel, wait.""

I stopped.

Her voice was no longer angry.

It was desperate.

"There's something else you need to know about those transfers.""

Dad turned back toward her.

"What?""

Vanessa looked at the phone in his hand.

Then she whispered the words that made the blood drain from my face.

"The account receiving the money isn't mine.""

Dad stared at her.

"Whose account is it?""

Vanessa's lips trembled.

May you like

And before she could answer, Dad's phone lit up with a new message from Marcus.

*The receiving account has been identified. The name on the account is someone Daniel knows personally.*
