Amused

Chapter 2: My Father Opened His Phone

Dad didn't call out when he came through the front door.

That was the first sign that something was wrong.

Usually, Daniel Carter announced his arrival with a cheerful, "Where's my favorite troublemaker?"" before asking whether anyone wanted food from the airport.

That evening, I heard only the scrape of his suitcase rolling across the entryway.

Then Vanessa's voice floated down the hall.

"Daniel! You're home early!""

Her tone was bright enough to make my skin crawl.

I opened my bedroom door.

From the landing, I could see her hurrying toward him in a cream-colored blouse, her gold bracelet sliding down her wrist. She reached up to kiss his cheek, but Dad turned slightly, making the gesture land near his ear instead.

"Your flight was supposed to get in tomorrow," she continued.

"My meetings ended early.""

"Well, that's wonderful. I've made dinner reservations for us this weekend. We haven't had a proper night out in ages.""

Dad placed his suitcase beside the stairs.

"Where's Emily?""

Vanessa blinked.

"Upstairs, I imagine. Why?""

"I want to talk to her.""

"Daniel, she's been in one of her moods all afternoon. She accused me of doing something outrageous, and I think she's worked herself into a state.""

I gripped the banister.

Dad looked at her.

"What did she accuse you of?""

Vanessa gave a tiny, exasperated laugh.

"She says I took money from her account.""

"Did you?""

Her smile froze.

Then she reached for his arm.

"Can we please not do this the moment you walk through the door? I'm sure she's already told you some emotional, exaggerated version of events.""

"I asked you a question, Vanessa.""

She pulled her hand away.

"I moved some money around to help the family. That's all.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"How much?""

"Daniel—"

"How much?""

She glanced toward the stairs and spotted me.

For a moment, our eyes met.

Her expression told me everything I needed to know.

She wanted me to disappear.

Instead, I walked downstairs.

"I had $2,340," I said.

"Now I have $12.67.""

Dad turned toward me.

His face softened immediately.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

I handed him my phone.

"I took screenshots. The transfers started six days ago. I didn't authorize any of them.""

He studied the screen without speaking.

The longer he looked, the more rigid his shoulders became.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're making this sound like a crime. It was a family decision.""

Dad didn't look up.

"These are transfers from Emily's personal savings account.""

"Which you helped her open," Vanessa replied.

"You could easily replace the money later.""

"That's not the point.""

"Then what is the point? Mia needed a computer for school. Emily is young.

She has years before college. She can earn more.""

I watched Dad scroll through the transactions.

His thumb stopped on one entry.

Then another.

He looked at the dates.

"Six days ago," he murmured.

He tapped the screen.

"Five days ago.""

Another tap.

"Four days ago.""

His face changed.

I had seen Dad angry before. Once, when a contractor tried to cheat one of his employees out of overtime pay, he'd spent an entire afternoon on the phone until the man corrected the payroll.

But this was different.

He wasn't simply angry.

He looked as though he were assembling a puzzle and beginning to realize how large the picture might be.

"Vanessa," he said, "how did you access Emily's account?""

She lifted her chin.

"You gave me access to the household banking information when you asked me to help organize expenses.""

"Household banking information is not permission to empty a child's savings account.""

"Don't call her a child when it's convenient for you. You expect her to work, save, and behave like an adult, but the moment the family needs something, suddenly she's too young to contribute?""

Emily.

That was how I knew Vanessa was losing control.

She had stopped using my name with affection or even irritation. Now she spoke about me as if I were a line item in a budget.

Dad handed my phone back to me.

"Go upstairs for a moment, sweetheart.""

I stiffened.

"Are you going to let her keep the money?""

His eyes met mine.

"No.""

"Because she says it's for the family.""

"I don't care what she says.""

I searched his face.

"Promise?""

He reached out and squeezed my shoulder.

"I promise.""

I returned to the stairs, but I didn't go all the way up. I sat on the bottom step, where I could hear everything without being seen.

Dad walked into the living room.

Vanessa followed him, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor.

"You cannot seriously be taking her side over mine," she said.

"This isn't about sides.""

"Of course it is. You always make me the villain whenever Emily doesn't get her way.""

"She worked for that money.""

"And I work in this house!""

"Then explain what that has to do with her savings.""

Vanessa let out a sharp breath.

"Everything costs money, Daniel. Groceries. Utilities.

School expenses. Insurance. I've been managing this household while you're away building your company, and you have no idea how much pressure I'm under.""

Dad removed his jacket and draped it over a chair.

"If you needed money for household expenses, you could have asked me.""

"I shouldn't have to ask permission for every little thing.""

"Taking money from Emily's account isn't a little thing.""

"She's your daughter. Her future is your responsibility.""

"And because I'm her father, I have the right to decide how to provide for her. You don't get to make that decision by taking money without her consent.""

Vanessa went silent.

Then she said, more softly, "I thought we were a family.""

Dad stared at her.

"So did I.""

The words seemed to land harder than shouting would have.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa reached for her phone.

"Fine. I'll transfer the money back when I can.""

"When you can?""

"Yes, Daniel. I don't have thousands of dollars sitting around.""

Dad glanced toward the kitchen.

"That MacBook cost more than two thousand dollars.""

"Mia needed it.""

"Her existing laptop was working.""

"How would you know? You barely ask about her schoolwork!""

"Because I asked her last week how her classes were going, and she told me her laptop was fine.""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

No answer came.

Dad took his own phone from his pocket.

"I'm calling the bank.""

Her expression changed instantly.

"Why?""

"To find out how these transfers were authorized.""

"You don't need to do that.""

"Why not?""

"Because it's unnecessary. I can explain everything.""

"Then explain it to the bank.""

She moved toward him.

"Daniel, please. Think about what you're doing. You're turning a private family disagreement into a financial investigation.""

Dad looked at her for a long moment.

"Emily trusted us to protect her money. One of us broke that trust. I intend to find out exactly how.""

He walked into his home office and shut the door.

Vanessa stood in the living room, staring after him.

Then she turned toward the stairs.

I pulled back before she could see me.

Her footsteps climbed slowly.

When she reached the landing, she stopped outside my bedroom.

"Emily?""

I didn't answer.

"Open the door.""

I remained silent.

She knocked once, hard.

"You have no idea what you've started.""

I heard her inhale sharply.

"Your father is under enough pressure without you inventing problems for him. If he loses his temper with me, that will be on you.""

My stomach twisted, but I remembered Dad's promise.

I had done nothing wrong.

I opened the door just enough to look at her.

"I didn't take the money.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Families make sacrifices for each other.""

"Then why didn't you ask me?""

She looked startled by the question.

Only for a second.

"Because you would have said no.""

"Yes," I whispered.

"I would have.""

Her lips pressed together.

"That selfish attitude is exactly why you need to learn how the real world works.""

She turned away before I could answer.

I watched her descend the stairs.

For years, I'd thought the worst thing about Vanessa was that she didn't love me the way she loved Mia.

Now I understood that her lack of love was only part of the problem.

She believed my needs mattered less.

She believed my work belonged to her.

And she believed that if she spoke confidently enough, she could turn anything she did into something I owed her gratitude for.

A few minutes later, Dad emerged from his office.

His phone was in his hand.

He looked directly at Vanessa.

"Sit down.""

She frowned.

"Daniel, I've already told you—"

"Sit down.""

Something in his voice made her obey.

Dad took a seat opposite her and opened a banking application.

"Emily's account is one issue," he said.

"But the transfers raised another question.""

Vanessa shifted in her chair.

"What question?""

Dad turned the screen toward himself.

"Why were there transfers from my corporate reserve account during the same period?""

The room went still.

I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.

Vanessa blinked rapidly.

"What are you talking about?""

Dad scrolled through the transactions.

"Payments I didn't authorize. Transfers to an account I don't recognize. And withdrawals that don't match any company expenses.""

He looked up.

"Have you been moving money out of Carter Commercial's reserve account?""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Dad's voice became dangerously quiet.

May you like

"Then I suggest you start remembering.""

And for the first time since she had married my father, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
