Amused

Chapter 8: The Son They Tried to Destroy

The message on Laura’s phone felt like the final piece of a trap snapping into place.

*Remove Harrison from company access immediately.*

But the account behind it was not Mia’s.

Not Robert’s.

It was Daniel’s.

My son stood frozen.

The same man who had spent the last hour discovering he had been manipulated was now watching the evidence point toward him.

I knew that feeling.

The helplessness.

The anger.

The disbelief.

Only hours earlier, I had stood in the hallway watching everyone believe I had done something horrible.

Now Daniel was standing in the middle of the room, watching the same thing happen to him.

“Dad,” he said quietly.

I looked at him.

“I didn’t send that.””

I believed him.

Not because I was his father.

Because I had seen enough tonight to understand the pattern.

Someone was using our names like weapons.

Our trust.

Our history.

Everything that made us believable.

Laura looked at her phone again.

“The instruction was submitted twenty minutes ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“Twenty minutes?””

“Yes.””

“That was right after Mia left.””

Nobody missed the timing.

She had left the house.

Then immediately started the next step.

“She knew the camera would expose her,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

“So she changed the plan.””

Michael’s voice came through the phone.

“Exactly.””

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“What does she gain by blaming me?””

Michael answered:

“Control.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Explain.””

“She couldn’t make Harrison disappear anymore.””

The words sounded terrible.

But true.

“So she needed another target.””

Michael continued.

“You are the easiest person to replace.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Her own husband.””

“Yes.””

A silence followed.

Because that was the part that hurt the most.

Mia had not only betrayed my family.

She had betrayed the person closest to her.

Daniel walked away.

He stopped near the fireplace.

Near Margaret’s photograph.

For a moment, he looked like the little boy who used to sit on the floor while his mother read him stories.

Then he whispered:

“How did I not see this?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was asking themselves the same question.

How had we missed it?

How had someone entered our family and built a plan right in front of us?

Emily moved closer to her brother.

“Daniel…”

He turned.

“I accused Dad.””

Her eyes filled.

“You didn’t know.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I didn’t ask.””

That was the truth.

And it was the hardest truth.

He had not been forced to hit me.

He had chosen to believe the worst.

But he was also a victim of something carefully designed.

Both things could be true.

I walked toward him.

“Your mistake hurt me.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“But fixing it matters more than punishing yourself.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

Daniel looked at me.

“I think it’s her.””

He answered.

“Mia.””

Her voice came immediately.

“You’re angry.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Where are you?””

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I want to understand how you could do this.””

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

Not a happy one.

A tired one.

“You still think this is about one night.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“You think I suddenly became a bad person.””

Nobody spoke.

Mia continued.

“You don’t understand anything.””

Daniel walked toward the center of the room.

“Then explain.””

“You all think Harrison is the center of this family.””

I looked at the phone.

“What does that mean?””

She heard me.

“Exactly.””

Her voice sharpened.

“Everyone revolves around him.””

“That isn’t true,” Daniel said.

“Isn’t it?””

A pause.

“Your father built everything. Your father made every decision. Your father always knew what was best.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Mia.””

“No, Daniel. Tell me I’m wrong.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was some truth hidden inside her bitterness.

My family had always looked to me.

Not because I demanded it.

Because I had spent years being the person they depended on.

But maybe Mia saw that as something else.

Something unfair.

She continued.

“I married you, and I was always standing behind someone else.””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Then you should have talked to me.””

“Would you have listened?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

The certainty in her voice was unsettling.

“You would have defended him.””

Daniel looked at me.

Maybe years ago, he would have.

Maybe she knew him better than we thought.

But knowing someone’s weaknesses did not give you the right to destroy them.

Daniel asked:

“So your answer was to frame my father?””

“No.””

A pause.

“My answer was to stop being powerless.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You hurt innocent people.””

Mia laughed softly.

“Innocent?””

Emily’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

“You really think your father is innocent in everything?””

I felt a strange coldness.

Because that was not anger.

That was accusation.

Daniel noticed too.

“What are you talking about?””

Mia didn’t answer.

“Ask him.””

The line went quiet.

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad?””

I felt my chest tighten.

Because I had no idea what she was referring to.

“What is she talking about?””

Mia spoke again.

“You never told them.””

I stared at the phone.

“Told them what?””

“You know.””

“No, I don’t.””

Her voice became softer.

“You always make yourself the hero, Harrison.””

I felt something inside me shift.

Because suddenly this was not just about documents.

Not just about money.

There was something else.

Something from my past.

Something Mia believed she could use.

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad?””

I had no answer.

Because I truly didn’t know.

Mia continued:

“Tell them about Robert.””

My heart stopped.

My brother’s name.

Again.

“What about Robert?””

Daniel asked.

Mia laughed.

“You still don’t know.””

The room went silent.

Michael’s voice came through the phone.

“Mia.””

Everyone looked at the speaker.

“What?”” Daniel asked.

Michael sounded nervous.

“Mia, don’t do this.””

“Why?””

“Because you’re changing the plan.””

A pause.

Then Mia said:

“The plan failed.””

Her voice became colder.

“So I’m telling the truth instead.””

Nobody moved.

“What truth?”” I asked.

Mia answered:

“The truth about why Robert hates your father.””

I stared at the phone.

My brother.

My own brother.

I remembered the years of silence between us.

The arguments.

The distance.

But I never knew why it had become so deep.

Daniel asked:

“What happened between them?””

Mia didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Ask your father what happened twenty years ago.””

Then the call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because once again, she had planted a question.

A doubt.

A crack.

I looked at my children.

And I realized something terrifying.

Mia had spent months collecting information about us.

But she had also discovered something about my past.

Something I had buried.

Something even my children didn’t know.

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad.””

I swallowed.

“Yes?””

“Is there something you never told us?””

I looked at Margaret’s photograph.

At the woman who had always believed honesty mattered.

Then I looked back at my children.

“I need to tell you something.””

Nobody moved.

“Twenty years ago…”

My voice became quiet.

“Your uncle Robert and I lost our company.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“I never told you the whole story.””

Emily sat down slowly.

“What happened?””

I took a breath.

“Because the truth was more complicated than I wanted you to know.””

Daniel stared.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“Your uncle Robert didn’t leave because we disagreed.””

A silence followed.

“He left because I made a decision.””

“What decision?””

I closed my eyes.

A memory I had buried for two decades came back.

The meeting.

The argument.

The signature.

The betrayal.

Then I said the words I had never spoken to my children.

“Twenty years ago, I chose the company over my brother.””

Nobody spoke.

And then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Mia.

May you like

One final sentence.

*“Now they’ll know why Robert helped me.””*
