Chapter 3: The Call That Changed Everything
“Your father wasn’t the person Mia was trying to frame tonight.””
The voice on the other end of Daniel’s phone was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm that comes from someone who has been carrying a secret for a long time.
Daniel stood in the middle of the living room, staring at the screen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
“Who is this?”” Daniel asked.
The voice hesitated.
Then answered.
“Someone who should have spoken sooner.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Michael Reeves.””
My heart stopped.
I knew that name.
Everyone in the room knew that name.
Michael had been Daniel’s business partner for almost ten years.
He was the man who attended company dinners, signed contracts with Daniel, and stood beside him when his company expanded.
But he was also the last person I expected to hear from at that moment.
Daniel walked away from the others.
“What does this have to do with Mia?””
Michael sighed.
“Everything.””
Daniel looked back at me.
His eyes were full of questions.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“Why are you calling me now?””
“Because I saw the video.””
The room went silent again.
Daniel gripped the phone.
“You saw the security footage?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Another pause.
“Because Mia sent it to me.””
The words landed like a stone dropping into deep water.
Nobody reacted immediately.
It was too confusing.
Too impossible.
Daniel frowned.
“She sent you the footage?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael’s voice lowered.
“Because she wanted me to help her.””
Daniel looked around.
Emily’s face had gone pale.
I felt a strange heaviness in my chest.
The truth was coming out.
But it was arriving piece by piece.
And every piece seemed darker than the one before.
Daniel turned back to the phone.
“Help her do what?””
Michael didn’t answer right away.
That silence said more than words.
“Michael.””
“She wanted me to create a story.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What story?””
“The story where you believed your father was dangerous.””
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the staircase.
Then back at the phone.
“Why would she need you?””
Michael exhaled.
“Because she knew you loved your father.””
The sentence hit harder than I expected.
Because it was true.
Daniel and I had disagreements over the years.
Every family did.
But underneath everything, I believed my son loved me.
Until tonight.
Until the moment he looked at me and decided I was guilty.
Michael continued.
“She knew if she accused you directly, Daniel would ask questions. But if she made it about your father…”
His voice faded.
Daniel finished the sentence.
“I would react emotionally.””
“Yes.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
I watched my son absorb every word.
Not as a husband defending his wife.
But as a man realizing he had been manipulated.
“Why are you telling me this?”” Daniel asked.
Michael was quiet.
Then he said:
“Because I’m tired of covering for her.””
Those words changed the atmosphere.
Covering for her.
Not helping her.
Not supporting her.
Covering.
Daniel noticed too.
“What have you been covering?””
Nobody answered.
Then Michael said something that made everyone look at each other.
“Mia wasn’t interested in your father’s house.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
Daniel looked toward me.
Michael continued.
“She was interested in your company.””
Daniel went completely still.
“What are you talking about?””
“I’m saying the house was a distraction.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
The house.
The accusation.
The camera.
The humiliation.
All of it suddenly felt like part of something much larger.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“How?””
Michael answered carefully.
“Mia has been asking questions about your financial records.””
Daniel looked confused.
“My financial records?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“For months.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Nobody had an answer.
Because apparently, everyone had been seeing different pieces of the same puzzle.
Michael continued.
“She asked about your ownership shares. She asked about company accounts. She asked about what would happen if you were unable to make decisions.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Unable to make decisions?””
“Yes.””
The room became painfully quiet.
I understood before Daniel did.
“She wanted to make me look unstable,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
Michael heard me through the phone.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What do you mean?””
I stared at the floor.
The pieces were connecting.
Mia hadn’t just wanted people to hate me.
She wanted people to doubt me.
A false accusation could damage someone’s reputation.
But questions about someone’s mental ability, judgment, or reliability?
Those could damage everything.
Michael spoke again.
“She knew one accusation alone wouldn’t be enough.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“So she planned more.””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
Michael was silent.
Then he said:
“She had documents.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What documents?””
“Documents claiming your father was no longer capable of managing his affairs.””
Emily gasped.
I felt the room shift.
My own children looked at me.
Not with suspicion anymore.
With fear.
Not fear of me.
Fear for what almost happened.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“No.””
Michael continued.
“She wanted control over the situation before anyone realized what was happening.””
Daniel covered his face with one hand.
“My wife…”
He couldn’t finish.
I wanted to feel anger.
I wanted to feel betrayed.
But all I felt was sadness.
Because my son had been standing closest to the fire.
And he hadn’t realized he was burning.
“Michael,” Daniel said.
“Yes?””
“Do you have proof?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
Everyone looked up.
Daniel stood immediately.
“What kind?””
“Emails.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“From Mia?””
“Yes.””
“To you?””
“Yes.””
“Why would she send those?””
Michael’s voice became heavy.
“Because she trusted me.””
A bitter silence followed.
Then Michael added:
“Or she thought she could control me.””
Daniel walked toward the window.
Outside, the night was completely dark.
The same night that had started with laughter and family memories had become something else entirely.
A night where trust had disappeared.
“Send me everything,” Daniel said.
“I already did.””
Daniel looked at his phone.
A notification appeared.
New email.
From Michael.
He opened it.
His eyes moved across the screen.
Then his face changed.
“What?”” Emily asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He kept reading.
I watched his expression shift from confusion…
to disbelief…
to anger.
Finally, he looked at me.
“Dad.””
“Yes?””
“There’s something else.””
I felt a chill.
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The camera wasn’t the only thing Mia didn’t know about.””
Nobody understood.
Not yet.
Daniel turned the phone around.
On the screen was a photograph.
A document.
An old document.
My name was written across the top.
But the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.
Emily stepped closer.
“What is that?””
Daniel looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“It’s a legal agreement.””
My heart began pounding.
“What kind of agreement?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“One that says you transferred ownership of the house.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“I did not.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Then why are you looking at me like that?””
“Because Dad…”
He turned the phone toward me.
The signature at the bottom was clearly visible.
My name.
My handwriting.
But I had never signed it.
Daniel whispered:
“Someone forged your signature.””
And before anyone could respond, another message appeared on Michael’s email.
One sentence.
May you like
One sentence that revealed Mia’s plan had started long before tonight.
*“The first step is making Harrison look dangerous. The second step is making him disappear.””*
