Chapter 7: The Midnight Battle for Everything
“The house was only step one. By morning, the company will belong to us.””
Daniel read the message again.
Then again.
As if the words might somehow change.
As if the person who wrote them might suddenly become someone else.
But the name at the top of the screen remained the same.
Mia.
His wife.
The woman who had smiled across our dinner table.
The woman who had held his hand in front of everyone.
The woman who had spent months building a plan to take everything away.
Daniel lowered the phone.
“She’s still doing it.””
Nobody asked who he meant.
We already knew.
Laura stepped closer.
“Mr. Harrison, we need to move quickly.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She opened the folder again.
“Because the emergency authorization request is already in the system.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means if the request is approved before morning, temporary control could be transferred.””
“To whom?””
Laura looked at the documents.
“That is the problem.””
She pointed to a section.
“The request does not name a single person.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then who controls it?””
Laura looked at him.
“A trust.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What kind of trust?””
She handed the document to me.
I read the name.
And immediately felt something was wrong.
The trust was not mine.
Not Daniel’s.
Not the family’s.
It was a newly created organization.
Created six months earlier.
The same time the forged house documents appeared.
I looked at Daniel.
“She planned this carefully.””
He nodded.
“She did.””
For the first time that night, my son sounded less like someone defending his wife.
And more like someone trying to understand how he had been fooled.
Michael spoke through the phone.
“You need to understand something.””
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
“What?”” Daniel asked.
“Mia didn’t wake up one day and decide to do this.””
A pause.
“She built a system.””
I looked at the documents.
A system.
That word bothered me.
Because systems required more than one person.
They required planning.
Support.
Access.
People willing to help.
I looked at Laura.
“Who else knows about these documents?””
She hesitated.
“Very few people.””
“Who?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“People inside the company.””
Daniel immediately understood.
“Employees?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Laura took a breath.
“There are two names attached to the authorization process.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Tell me.””
She turned the page.
“The first is your wife.””
Nobody was surprised.
“The second…”
She stopped.
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“Who?””
Laura looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“The name is Harrison.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“What?””
Daniel took the paper.
His eyes scanned it.
Then his face changed.
“No.””
“What is it?”” Emily asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He handed me the page.
At the bottom were two approval signatures.
One belonged to Mia.
The other belonged to…
“Me?””
My voice barely came out.
The signature looked like mine.
Again.
Another perfect copy.
Another lie.
“They used my name.””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
“But why?””
Michael answered.
“Because your name gives the documents power.””
I stared at the paper.
All my life, I had built my reputation.
My signature meant trust.
My word meant something.
And now someone had turned that into a weapon.
Daniel walked toward the window.
“I should have seen it.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I should have seen it.””
His voice broke.
“She knew exactly how I would react tonight.””
He looked at me.
“She knew I would believe her.””
I said nothing.
Because there was no easy answer.
Forgiveness did not erase what happened.
But anger would not fix it either.
After a moment, I said:
“You made a mistake.””
Daniel looked surprised.
I continued.
“But what matters is what you do after you realize it.””
His eyes filled.
And for the first time that night, he looked like my son again.
Not the man who had hurt me.
Not the man who had been manipulated.
Just my son.
“I’m going to fix this.””
Laura nodded.
“Then we need to act now.””
She placed another folder on the table.
“What is that?””
“Evidence.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Transaction records.
I looked over his shoulder.
Most were between Mia and someone named “R.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who is R?””
Michael went silent.
That silence was enough.
“You know who it is,” Daniel said.
Michael sighed.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Robert.””
The name hit me.
Robert.
My younger brother.
Daniel’s uncle.
The room became completely still.
Emily whispered:
“Uncle Robert?””
I sat down slowly.
That was impossible.
My brother and I had not always agreed.
But family was family.
Or at least I thought it was.
Daniel looked at Michael.
“How long?””
Michael answered quietly.
“Since the beginning.””
My hands tightened.
“My own brother?””
Michael continued.
“I’m sorry.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wasn’t sure.””
Daniel looked angry.
“You said you had proof.””
“I have proof of communication.””
“Then why hesitate?””
Michael’s voice became heavy.
“Because Robert helped build the company.””
That was true.
Years ago, before the company became successful, Robert had worked beside me.
Long hours.
Small offices.
Difficult years.
I trusted him.
We had disagreements later.
Money.
Decisions.
Ownership.
But I never imagined betrayal.
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad…”
I raised my hand.
Not because I wanted silence.
Because I needed a moment.
My mind was filled with memories.
My brother beside me when we were young.
My brother helping me after our parents died.
My brother promising we would always protect each other.
And now his name was sitting inside a folder of evidence.
Laura spoke softly.
“There’s more.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She opened another document.
“This was the original plan.””
Daniel took it.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Dad…”
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
Emily took the paper.
Then her face changed.
“Dad…”
I looked between them.
“Tell me.””
Emily whispered:
“It says Mia and Robert needed you removed before the anniversary dinner.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the final page.
Because that was where the answer was.
The reason they chose tonight.
The reason everything happened at the family gathering.
He handed me the paper.
At the top was a date.
Tomorrow.
The day after the anniversary dinner.
And underneath was a sentence:
*“After Harrison signs the final transfer, the company acquisition will be complete.””*
I stared.
“I was supposed to sign something?””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
“But I didn’t.””
“No.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why are they still confident?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because they already have the signature they need.””
I looked at him.
“What signature?””
Michael’s voice lowered.
“The one they forged.””
Daniel stood up.
“But forged documents can be challenged.””
“Yes.””
“Then why aren’t they worried?””
Michael answered:
“Because tomorrow morning, they’re not planning to use the documents against Harrison.””
A pause.
“They’re planning to use them against Daniel.””
My son froze.
“What?””
Michael continued.
“Mia’s entire plan was never just to remove your father.””
The room became silent.
“She needed you to become the person responsible.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
Michael’s voice was barely audible.
“She planned to make Daniel look like the one who stole the company from his own father.””
I felt a chill.
The betrayal was deeper than we thought.
Mia wasn’t just destroying one person.
She was setting everyone against each other.
Father against son.
Brother against brother.
Family against family.
Then Laura’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel asked.
She didn’t answer immediately.
She listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“We have a problem.””
“What happened?””
Laura looked at all of us.
“The company security team just received an instruction.””
“From who?””
She looked at Daniel.
“From an account registered under your name.””
Daniel went pale.
“What instruction?””
Laura swallowed.
“To remove Harrison from company access immediately.””
Nobody moved.
Because the final trap had already started.
And this time…
May you like
The person being framed was not me.
It was my son.
