Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Wanted to See
The hallway felt smaller than it had ever been.
Everyone stood beneath the blinking red light, staring at the camera that had suddenly become the most important object in the house.
A few minutes earlier, my family had looked at me like I was a stranger.
Now they looked at Mia.
And she hated it.
I could see it in the way her fingers tightened around Daniel’s arm.
In the way her eyes moved from face to face, searching for someone who would rescue her.
Nobody did.
Not yet.
Daniel stared upward.
“The camera was recording?””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Confused.
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Mia immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
The room went quiet again.
Emily looked at her.
“Why?””
Mia blinked.
“What?””
Emily’s voice trembled.
“Why are you so desperate for us not to watch it?””
Mia’s face hardened.
“I’m upset. I just had the worst moment of my life, and everyone is standing here talking about a camera.””
I looked at her.
“The worst moment of your life?””
She turned toward me.
“Yes.””
I swallowed the pain in my cheek.
“The moment you created?””
Daniel looked at me sharply.
“Dad.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“You need to hear this.””
Mia shook her head.
“This is exactly what he wants. He wants to confuse everyone.””
I almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the accusation was unbelievable.
A seventy-year-old man standing in his own hallway was supposedly the person controlling everything.
But before I could answer, Emily walked toward the small security monitor near the staircase.
My daughter had always been practical.
When she was a child, she was the one who fixed broken toys with tape and screws while Daniel simply threw his away.
She looked at the screen.
“Dad, how do we access the footage?””
I pointed toward the cabinet near the entrance.
“The recorder is inside.””
Mia’s voice became louder.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She immediately softened her tone.
“I mean… maybe we shouldn’t do this right now.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I’m your wife.””
The words hung in the air.
Daniel frowned.
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
For the first time, I saw uncertainty on my son’s face.
The same son who had slapped me without hesitation was now looking at his wife like he was seeing a side of her he didn’t recognize.
Mia noticed.
And she changed tactics.
She started crying again.
“I can’t believe you’re questioning me.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Mia…”
“No. I came here tonight to spend time with your family. I trusted everyone here.””
Emily crossed her arms.
“You’re the one who said don’t watch the video.””
Mia looked at her.
“Because I’m embarrassed.””
“Embarrassed?””
“Yes.””
She touched her torn blouse.
“Do you know what it feels like to have something like this happen?””
Nobody answered.
Because the question sounded powerful.
Almost convincing.
That was Mia’s talent.
She knew how to turn every situation around.
She didn’t need people to believe every detail.
She only needed them to feel something.
Fear.
Sympathy.
Anger.
Anything except curiosity.
But curiosity was exactly what the camera created.
I walked slowly toward the cabinet.
My legs felt heavier than usual.
Not from age.
From disappointment.
Every step reminded me that my son had believed the worst version of me before hearing one word.
When I reached the recorder, I opened the cabinet.
Inside was the security system.
A small screen.
A keyboard.
Several saved recordings.
Daniel followed behind me.
“Dad…”
I didn’t look at him.
“Yes?””
He hesitated.
“I…”
He couldn’t finish.
That hurt more than anything.
Because there was nothing he could say that would erase what happened.
Emily stood beside me.
“Play it.””
Mia’s voice cut through the room.
“Daniel, don’t.””
He turned around.
“Why not?””
She stared at him.
“Because I know what happened.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you should trust me.””
A silence followed.
Then Daniel said something I never expected.
“I did trust you.””
Mia froze.
“What?””
“I trusted you enough that I didn’t even ask him what happened.””
Her expression changed slightly.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
Daniel noticed too.
I inserted the recording drive.
The screen came alive.
A list of timestamps appeared.
The family gathered around.
I entered the time from when I walked upstairs.
The video loaded.
At first, it showed an empty hallway.
Then Mia appeared.
Alone.
Standing exactly where she had been.
Everyone watched.
Nobody spoke.
On the screen, Mia looked toward the staircase.
Then toward the camera.
My stomach tightened.
She had seen it.
She knew.
Emily whispered.
“She knew the camera was there?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I wanted to see.
A few seconds later, the video showed something that made the entire room go silent.
Mia smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not a scared smile.
A confident one.
The kind of smile someone makes when they think they have already won.
Daniel took one step backward.
“No…”
Mia’s face changed.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Nobody looked at her.
They were watching the screen.
On the recording, Mia adjusted her hair.
She practiced a frightened expression.
Then she looked toward the stairs again.
Waiting.
Waiting for me.
My hands tightened.
The truth was painful.
But it was also clear.
She had prepared.
She had rehearsed.
Then I appeared on the screen.
The room became completely silent.
The recording continued.
I watched myself walk into the hallway.
An old man looking for a photo album.
Nothing more.
Mia approached me.
The conversation played through the speakers.
Her question about the house.
Her strange behavior.
Her checking the hallway.
Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.
Mia grabbed her blouse.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emily covered her mouth.
The sound of ripping fabric echoed through the living room.
Then the scream.
“Help!””
The recording showed everything.
Not what Mia claimed.
What actually happened.
My hands never touched her.
I never moved toward her.
I never threatened her.
I only stepped backward in shock.
When the video ended, nobody spoke.
Not even Mia.
The screen froze on the final image.
Mia looking directly at the camera.
Her face no longer looked frightened.
It looked angry.
Daniel slowly turned around.
His expression was impossible to read.
“Mia.””
She said nothing.
“Mia, explain.””
She crossed her arms.
“You’re seriously believing a camera over your wife?””
Daniel stared at her.
“It recorded you.””
“It recorded a moment.””
“A moment you created.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You’re all making a mistake.””
Emily looked at her.
“What mistake?””
Mia looked around the room.
At all of us.
Then her eyes landed on me.
And something cold appeared in her expression.
“This isn’t over.””
The words were quiet.
Almost a whisper.
Then she grabbed her purse.
Daniel reached for her.
“Where are you going?””
She stopped.
Without turning around, she said:
“I’m leaving before your father destroys this family completely.””
The front door slammed.
Nobody moved.
I stood in the hallway, staring at the empty space where she had been.
I should have felt relieved.
The truth was finally visible.
The camera had saved me.
But instead, I felt something worse.
Because as everyone slowly began to understand what Mia had done, I remembered something she had said earlier.
She hadn’t asked what would happen to the house.
She had asked what would happen when everything changed.
And now I wondered why.
Why had she chosen that night?
Why had she risked everything?
And why did she seem so certain that one recording would not be enough to stop her?
Then Daniel’s phone started ringing.
He looked at the screen.
The color drained from his face.
“Who is it?”” Emily asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because the name flashing on his phone belonged to someone none of us expected.
Someone who had not been part of our family dinner.
Someone who knew exactly what Mia had planned.
May you like
And when Daniel finally answered the call, the first words he heard were:
“Your father wasn’t the person Mia was trying to frame tonight.””
