Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Our First Meeting

For a moment, I couldn't understand the words.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

Mason was following Emma.

Not me.

My mind tried to reject it.

Tried to rearrange the pieces into something less painful.

But there was no version of this where it didn't hurt.

I looked at my sister.

The person who had held my hand through every heartbreak.

The person who had stood beside me at my wedding.

The person who knew every secret I had ever carried.

"What does that mean?""

Emma wiped her face.

"It means I was the person he was watching first.""

The room felt silent.

Even the sound of traffic outside disappeared.

"Why?""

Emma looked down.

"I don't know everything.""

"But you know something.""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I sat down slowly.

"Start from the beginning.""

Emma took a deep breath.

"Nine years ago, I was working at the marketing firm that handled Richard Cole's company.""

I frowned.

"Richard?""

She nodded.

"I didn't know who he really was at the time.""

"Then why was he watching you?""

Emma hesitated.

"Because I found something.""

"What?""

"Financial records.""

The words connected immediately.

My company.

Mason.

Richard.

The plan.

"What kind of records?""

"Records showing Richard was moving money through fake consulting companies.""

Daniel looked up.

"You found evidence of fraud?""

Emma nodded.

"I didn't know how serious it was. I just knew something didn't feel right.""

I stared at her.

"And Mason?""

She looked away.

"Mason worked with Richard.""

The room became colder.

"Worked with him?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

Nine years.

Nine years of memories.

Nine years of believing I knew my husband.

And every piece was becoming something else.

Emma continued.

"Richard wanted the documents back.""

"Why didn't he just take them?""

"Because I had already copied them.""

Daniel looked surprised.

"You had copies?""

Emma nodded.

"I gave them to someone I trusted.""

"Who?""

She looked at me.

"You.""

My breath caught.

"What?""

"Claire, remember the night we met Mason?""

I did.

Of course I did.

That night had always been special.

The beginning.

The moment my life changed.

"We were supposed to have dinner.""

Emma nodded.

"But before you arrived, Mason approached me.""

My heart tightened.

"What did he say?""

"He pretended to be concerned.""

"About what?""

"About Richard.""

I frowned.

"He told me Richard was dangerous.""

The irony almost made me laugh.

"He was warning you about his own partner?""

Emma nodded.

"At the time, I believed him.""

She looked ashamed.

"He acted like he wanted to help.""

I understood then.

Mason wasn't just good at lying.

He was good at becoming whatever someone needed him to be.

"So why me?""

Emma looked at the floor.

"Because when he saw you, everything changed.""

I hated that sentence.

Not because it was romantic.

Because it wasn't.

It sounded like an explanation for a business decision.

"He saw you as an opportunity.""

My stomach twisted.

"An opportunity?""

Emma nodded.

"Your company was growing. You had investors. You had access to information Richard wanted.""

I whispered:

"So he chose me.""

Emma's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Because somewhere inside me, a small part had still been holding onto something.

Maybe he was a terrible husband.

Maybe he betrayed me.

But maybe our beginning was real.

Now even that was gone.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Why didn't you tell Claire?""

Emma looked at him.

"Because Mason found me first.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"The week after your wedding.""

My heart stopped.

"He came to my apartment.""

"What did he want?""

Emma swallowed.

"He wanted the copies.""

"And?""

"I refused.""

"What happened?""

She looked at me.

"He threatened me.""

My hands tightened.

"How?""

"He said if I exposed him, Claire would lose everything.""

I shook my head.

"He was already planning this?""

Emma nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel looked at the files on the computer.

"The timeline makes sense.""

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?""

"Everything we found connects.""

He pointed to the screen.

"Mason spent years preparing.""

The words made me sick.

Years.

Not months.

Not a mistake.

A plan.

A long, patient plan.

I stood.

"I need to know what the accident was.""

Emma went quiet.

I knew she didn't want to answer.

But I needed to.

"What happened that night?""

She looked at me.

"The night you met Mason?""

"Yes.""

Emma nodded slowly.

"After dinner, I followed Richard.""

"Why?""

"Because I thought he was meeting someone connected to the records.""

"And Mason?""

"He followed me.""

I waited.

"He confronted Richard outside the restaurant.""

"What happened?""

"They argued.""

"About what?""

"The documents.""

My heart raced.

"And then?""

Emma closed her eyes.

"Then a car came around the corner.""

I felt cold.

"Whose car?""

She looked at me.

"Mason's.""

I froze.

"No.""

Emma started crying.

"I didn't know at first.""

"What are you saying?""

"I thought it was an accident.""

My voice became sharper.

"Emma.""

She looked at me.

"Mason hit someone.""

The room went silent.

"Who?""

Her answer came softly.

"Richard.""

I stared.

"What?""

"He didn't die.""

I exhaled.

"He survived.""

"Then why...""

"Because Mason used it.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Used what?""

Emma looked at him.

"The accident.""

She wiped her tears.

"He told Richard he could make the problem disappear if Richard helped him.""

I shook my head.

"Help him do what?""

Emma looked at me.

"Get close to you.""

The words were devastating.

Everything.

Every dinner.

Every kiss.

Every promise.

A strategy.

"Why didn't Richard expose him?""

"Because Mason had leverage.""

"What leverage?""

Emma looked at the files.

"The same thing Mason always used.""

Fear.

I walked to the window.

The city moved below me.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Everyone living normal lives.

And I wondered how many people were carrying invisible disasters.

"Where is Richard now?""

Daniel answered.

"According to public records, he left the country five years ago.""

Emma shook her head.

"No.""

Everyone looked at her.

"No?""

"He didn't leave.""

"How do you know?""

"Because I saw him.""

My heart stopped.

"When?""

Emma looked at the phone.

"Yesterday.""

Silence.

"Where?""

She hesitated.

Then:

"At the Lakeshore Grand.""

I turned.

"What?""

"He was there.""

Daniel's face changed.

"Impossible.""

Emma nodded.

"I saw him.""

"Why didn't you say anything?""

"Because I thought I was imagining it.""

She looked at me.

"Until I saw the video.""

I looked at the screen.

Richard.

Mason.

The gala.

Everything connected.

Then my computer made a sound.

A new file appeared.

None of us touched it.

The title:

*FINAL PRESENTATION*

My skin went cold.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Don't open it.""

But I already knew.

Mason wanted us to see it.

He wanted the final move.

I clicked.

The screen showed Mason sitting at a desk.

Recording himself.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Calm.

Like he was giving a business presentation.

"Claire.""

He looked directly into the camera.

Like he knew I would watch.

"I knew you would find this eventually.""

My breathing stopped.

He continued.

"I also know what you're thinking.""

A small smile.

"You think this proves I used you.""

I stared.

"You're wrong.""

The video changed.

Documents appeared.

Photos.

Records.

Then Mason said:

"The truth is, Claire, you were never my target.""

I frowned.

"What?""

His eyes looked almost sad.

Almost.

"You were the only person who could save me.""

The screen flickered.

Then one final document appeared.

A document I had never seen before.

My name was at the top.

But this time, it wasn't a forged signature.

It was mine.

A real signature.

My heart dropped.

Because I remembered signing it.

Nine years ago.

On the day I met Mason.

The document title appeared.

*Confidential Ownership Agreement.*

And beneath it was one sentence:

*In the event of financial misconduct by Mason Bennett, all assets and evidence will be transferred to Claire Bennett.*

I stopped breathing.

Because Mason wasn't showing me proof that he won.

He was showing me something else.

A document that proved he knew I would eventually discover everything.

And at the bottom of the video, he left one final message.

"Claire, if you're watching this, it means I failed.""

A pause.

Then:

"But if I failed, you need to find the person who helped me.""

The video ended.

And a name appeared on the screen.

A name none of us expected.

Because it wasn't Mason.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Brooke.

May you like

It was:

*Emma Bennett.*
