Amused

Chapter 6: The Person Who Knew Everything

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The email sat in my hand.

Daniel's name stared back at me from the screen.

And the strange thing was, I didn't feel angry first.

I felt confused.

Because anger required understanding.

And I didn't understand.

Daniel had been with me since the beginning.

Before the company had a tenth employee.

Before we had offices with glass walls and conference rooms.

Before investors knew my name.

He was there when Bennett Financial Solutions was nothing more than a laptop on my kitchen table and a notebook full of handwritten plans.

He had protected my company.

Protected my contracts.

Protected my employees.

When I fought through the first difficult years, Daniel was the person who told me I was building something real.

Now his name was attached to the one thing that could destroy everything.

"Claire.""

His voice sounded different.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I looked at him.

"Tell me this isn't real.""

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

"Daniel.""

He looked away.

And the betrayal hurt more than I expected.

Because Mason was a shock.

But Daniel?

Daniel was impossible.

Victoria quietly gathered the documents in front of her.

"I think we should postpone this meeting.""

Nobody responded.

Even she seemed to understand that something much bigger had just entered the room.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Claire, please.""

I held up my hand.

"No.""

My voice was quiet.

And somehow that made it stronger.

"Do not say please like you don't know what you did.""

His face changed.

"I can explain.""

Everyone always said that.

I was starting to hate those words.

I can explain.

Mason said them.

Brooke said them.

Now Daniel.

"I don't want an explanation yet.""

I looked at the email again.

"I want the truth.""

The room was silent.

Finally, Daniel sat down.

He looked older suddenly.

Not because he had changed.

Because I was seeing him differently.

"There are things you don't know.""

I laughed softly.

"Apparently, there are a lot of things I don't know.""

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

"I never intended for this to happen.""

"That sentence means nothing.""

"I know.""

"Then tell me what happened.""

He looked at the floor.

And when he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.

"Mason approached me eight months ago.""

Eight months.

Before the gala.

Before Brooke.

Before the forged documents.

Before I knew anything was wrong.

"What did he want?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Advice.""

I stared at him.

"Advice?""

"He said he was worried about you.""

I almost laughed.

Everyone was worried about me.

Everyone except the one person who actually loved me.

"He said the pregnancy was putting pressure on you.""

My jaw tightened.

"And you believed him?""

"At first.""

The words hit me.

At first.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked up.

"It means he showed me things.""

"What things?""

"Emails. Messages. Notes about your workload.""

I stared.

"My workload?""

"He said you were exhausted. That you were making decisions without considering the consequences.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Claire...""

"No.""

My voice cracked.

"Because he wasn't showing you concern.""

I looked at him.

"He was building a case.""

Daniel didn't answer.

Because he knew.

He finally understood.

Or maybe he had always understood.

That possibility hurt more.

"What did you give him?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I gave him access.""

The room felt colder.

"Access to what?""

"Financial reports.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He already had access to some systems as your husband. I helped him understand the structure.""

I stared at him.

"You helped my husband take my company.""

"No.""

Daniel stood quickly.

"No, Claire. I helped him because I thought I was protecting the company.""

"From me?""

"No.""

"Then from who?""

Daniel looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw regret.

Real regret.

"I thought you were being manipulated.""

I went still.

"By who?""

He hesitated.

"Mason.""

The answer surprised me.

"What?""

"He was so convincing.""

Daniel's voice broke slightly.

"He came to me worried. He said you refused to slow down. He said he was scared your health was suffering. He said he wanted to create safeguards.""

I looked at Victoria.

Then back at Daniel.

"And when did you realize he was lying?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That was when I knew.

There was a moment.

A specific moment.

"When?""

He looked down.

"Three weeks ago.""

Three weeks.

The same time I found the phone.

The same time everything changed.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

His silence was unbearable.

"Why?""

Daniel's eyes filled with shame.

"Because he threatened me.""

The room went still.

"What did he threaten you with?""

Daniel looked at the door.

Like he was afraid someone was listening.

Then he said:

"He had evidence that I made a mistake years ago.""

I frowned.

"What mistake?""

"A legal filing.""

"Daniel.""

"It wasn't fraud. It wasn't criminal.""

"Then why were you afraid?""

He looked at me.

"Because Mason knew I would lose everything if the board found out.""

I understood.

Mason didn't need to control everyone.

He just needed everyone to have something to lose.

That was his real talent.

Not money.

Not charm.

Control.

"He blackmailed you.""

Daniel nodded.

"I tried to fix it.""

"How?""

"I started collecting evidence.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What evidence?""

Daniel reached into his briefcase.

Then stopped.

He looked toward the others.

"Not here.""

I immediately understood.

He was still afraid.

Even now.

"Daniel.""

"I need to show you something privately.""

Victoria stood.

"I believe my client has a right to know what information is being shared.""

I looked at her.

"No.""

Her expression changed.

"No?""

"No.""

I picked up the email.

"My husband tried to take my company. Someone inside my company helped him. And right now, I don't care about your client's rights.""

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

For the first time, her professional mask slipped.

"You should be careful, Mrs. Bennett.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because if Mr. Bennett's allegations are proven, you may lose more than your position.""

There it was.

The threat.

The same language.

The same pressure.

I stepped closer.

"Is that what you tell all your clients?""

"What?""

"That fear is a better strategy than truth?""

Nobody spoke.

Victoria picked up her folder.

"This meeting is over.""

She walked out.

The door closed behind her.

Only then did Daniel breathe.

"Claire.""

I looked at him.

"What did Mason really want?""

Daniel reached into his briefcase again.

This time he pulled out a small flash drive.

"I found this in his office.""

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"Everything.""

He placed it on the table.

"Emails. Recordings. Documents.""

My heartbeat increased.

"Recordings?""

Daniel nodded.

"Mason recorded conversations.""

"With who?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Everyone.""

The answer chilled me.

"He recorded employees.""

"Yes.""

"Investors?""

"Yes.""

"Me?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I didn't need him to.

The silence was enough.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photo appeared.

A photo of Daniel handing me the flash drive.

Taken from outside the conference room.

My blood froze.

Someone had been watching us.

Then another message appeared.

*"You should have listened the first time, Claire.""*

A second message arrived immediately.

*"Now I have to show everyone what you did.""*

I stared at the screen.

Then the final message appeared.

One sentence.

One sentence that made Daniel's face turn pale.

May you like

Because he knew exactly what it meant.

*"Ask your sister why she never told you she saw the accident.""*
