Amused

Chapter 7: The Accident My Sister Hid

I read the message again.

Then I looked at Emma.

She was standing near the window, her face pale.

Too pale.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The silence between us felt heavier than any accusation Mason had thrown at me.

Because I knew my sister.

I knew every expression on her face.

I knew the difference between confusion and fear.

And Emma was afraid.

Not for herself.

For me.

"What accident?""

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Emma didn't answer.

"Emma.""

She closed her eyes.

Daniel slowly stepped back.

"I think I should leave.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

He stopped.

"If Mason knows about this, then you know something too.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"I only know he mentioned it.""

"Then stay.""

I turned back to Emma.

"What accident?""

Emma sat down slowly.

The confidence she usually carried disappeared.

"I didn't want you to know this way.""

My heart started pounding.

"Know what?""

She looked at my stomach.

Then at me.

"About the night you met Mason.""

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Emma swallowed.

"Everything.""

The room felt smaller.

The same feeling I had experienced in the ballroom.

Like my life had been a room with hidden doors.

And every time I opened one, something worse waited behind it.

"Emma.""

She looked down.

"You always said meeting Mason was the luckiest moment of your life.""

I nodded slowly.

"It was.""

"Was it?""

The question hurt.

I stared at her.

"What are you saying?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Claire, Mason didn't just happen to be there that night.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"He knew you were going to be there.""

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"No.""

Emma looked at me.

"I saw him.""

"At the restaurant?""

She nodded.

"Before you arrived.""

The memory came rushing back.

Nine years earlier.

A small restaurant downtown.

A rainy evening.

I had been working late.

Emma had convinced me to meet her for dinner because she thought I spent too much time alone.

That was the night Mason appeared.

The charming stranger who offered me his umbrella.

The man who remembered my coffee order after one conversation.

The man who made me believe love could arrive unexpectedly.

"He was there before me?""

Emma nodded.

"I saw him talking to someone.""

"Who?""

"I didn't know at the time.""

My hands went cold.

"Who was it?""

Emma looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

"Your business competitor.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

"Claire...""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"No, that doesn't make sense.""

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

"Who?""

She whispered the name.

And my heart dropped.

"Richard Cole.""

The name was familiar.

Too familiar.

Richard had been one of the biggest competitors in my industry.

A man who spent years trying to convince investors that my company was too young to survive.

A man who had tried to acquire my firm twice.

A man who failed.

Because Bennett Financial Solutions grew faster than anyone expected.

"Why would Mason meet him?""

Emma looked away.

"Because I think Mason didn't meet you by accident.""

I stood.

"No.""

The word came out immediately.

Not because I didn't believe her.

Because believing her meant everything I remembered was false.

Every first moment.

Every sweet memory.

Every reason I loved him.

"Emma, he loved me.""

She looked at me sadly.

"Maybe he did.""

I stared.

"Maybe?""

She wiped her eyes.

"But Claire, love doesn't explain everything he did.""

The sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

I wanted to defend him.

I wanted to find one last reason.

One last explanation.

But every door I opened revealed another lie.

"What happened that night?""

Emma took a breath.

"I followed him.""

"You followed Mason?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because something felt wrong.""

That sounded like Emma.

She always trusted instincts.

I trusted evidence.

Maybe that was why she saw what I couldn't.

"I saw him leave the restaurant.""

"When?""

"Before you left.""

My chest tightened.

"What did he do?""

"He got into a car.""

"With Richard?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The room went quiet.

"Did you tell anyone?""

Emma looked away.

"No.""

"Why?""

Her eyes filled.

"Because the next morning, you were so happy.""

That answer hurt.

"You were in love.""

Emma's voice broke.

"You had never looked at anyone like that before.""

I sat down.

"And you chose not to ruin it.""

She nodded.

"Then why tell me now?""

She looked at the phone in my hand.

"Because Mason knows.""

A chill moved through me.

"What?""

"He knows I saw.""

"How?""

Emma hesitated.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My breath caught.

"What's that?""

"I received it two days ago.""

"From Mason?""

She nodded.

I took the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Emma standing outside the restaurant nine years ago.

Watching Mason and Richard.

My fingers trembled.

On the back of the photo were handwritten words.

*I know what you saw.*

I looked at Emma.

"He threatened you.""

She nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he called me.""

"When?""

"The day before the gala.""

My heart stopped.

"What did he say?""

Emma looked terrified.

"He said if I told you, he would release evidence.""

"What evidence?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Do you?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"No.""

But his reaction was too quick.

"Daniel.""

He closed his eyes.

"Claire...""

"What?""

He was silent.

Then:

"Mason mentioned your sister.""

My stomach dropped.

"What did he say?""

Daniel looked at me.

"He said Emma had information that could destroy you.""

"Destroy me?""

He nodded.

"He said the truth about your first meeting would change how everyone saw you.""

I felt dizzy.

"What does that mean?""

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Or because nobody wanted to.

I looked at the flash drive on the table.

Everything connected.

The affair.

The company.

The diagnosis.

The accident.

Mason had been preparing for years.

Not months.

Years.

I picked up the flash drive.

"Let's see what he recorded.""

Daniel looked worried.

"Claire, are you sure?""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"I'm not sure about anything anymore.""

We moved to my office.

Daniel connected the drive to my computer.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Emails.

Audio recordings.

Documents.

Folders.

One folder was labeled:

*CLAIRE BENNETT*

I stared.

My name.

Not my company.

Not my position.

Me.

Daniel clicked it.

Inside were dozens of files.

My medical records.

My personal schedule.

Photos.

Private conversations.

Then one audio file.

Created nine years ago.

The date matched the night I met Mason.

Emma covered her mouth.

"No.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She shook her head.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel pressed play.

At first, there was only restaurant noise.

People talking.

Glasses clinking.

Then a voice.

Mason.

Young.

Confident.

"She'll be perfect.""

My entire body went still.

Another voice answered.

Richard.

"You're sure?""

Mason laughed.

"She's exactly what I need.""

Emma grabbed the desk.

I couldn't breathe.

Because I knew his voice.

I had spent nine years loving that voice.

Then Mason said something that destroyed the last piece of my past.

"Once she trusts me, the company won't be a problem anymore.""

The recording continued.

But I didn't hear the rest.

Because the truth had already arrived.

Mason didn't fall in love with me.

He chose me.

The room spun.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Then a new notification appeared on my computer.

A message from an unknown sender.

Not my phone this time.

My company system.

The screen displayed one sentence.

*"Now that you know how it started, you should see how it ends.""*

A video file appeared underneath.

The title was:

*The Night Claire Bennett Lost Control.*

And beneath it was a timestamp.

Tonight.

The gala.

Before I kicked Mason.

Before security arrived.

Before anyone knew the truth.

Someone had recorded everything.

But the file preview showed something I didn't remember.

A moment before Mason grabbed my wrist.

May you like

A moment when I was standing alone.

And someone was whispering in my ear.
