Chapter 5: The Lie He Prepared For Me
I read the message three times.
Then four.
The words didn't change.
*You need to stop investigating before Mason tells everyone the truth about what you did.*
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Not because I was afraid of the threat.
Because I understood what it meant.
Mason wasn't improvising.
He wasn't panicking.
He had a second story ready.
A story where he wasn't the husband who betrayed me.
A story where I was the person everyone needed to fear.
Emma looked at my face.
"Claire.""
I didn't answer.
"Claire, what did it say?""
I handed her the phone.
She read it.
Her expression changed from confusion to anger.
"He sent this?""
"I don't know.""
"Who else would it be?""
I looked at the unknown number.
Anyone could have sent it.
But only one person knew exactly what I was doing.
Only one person had something to lose.
Mason.
My phone rang again.
This time, it was my company's legal department.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
"Claire, it's Daniel.""
Daniel Reeves had been the general counsel at Bennett Financial Solutions for six years.
He was calm under pressure.
Almost impossible to surprise.
But his voice sounded different.
Tired.
"Daniel, what's happening?""
There was silence.
That scared me more than panic would have.
"Claire, I need you to come to the office.""
"Why?""
"Because there are some documents that were submitted yesterday.""
My stomach tightened.
"What documents?""
Another pause.
"Documents claiming you authorized a temporary transfer of executive authority.""
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The plan was already moving.
"Mason.""
Daniel didn't say his name.
He didn't need to.
"Claire, I need to ask you something.""
"What?""
"Did you sign any medical or legal documents recently?""
"No.""
"Did you give Mason access to your company systems?""
I looked down.
The answer hurt.
"Yes.""
Because I had.
Because he was my husband.
Because I never imagined I needed to protect myself from him.
"He had access to my calendar," I said.
"Anything else?""
"Some financial reports.""
Daniel exhaled.
"Claire...""
"What?""
"Someone used your credentials yesterday morning.""
My heart stopped.
"Where?""
"At the company.""
"Who?""
"We're checking security footage.""
I stood up.
"Send it to me.""
"Claire, wait.""
"No.""
My voice became sharper.
"I need to know.""
Daniel went quiet.
Then:
"I'll send everything I have.""
After the call ended, Emma looked at me.
"You can't go there alone.""
"I need to.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Claire, this man planned a way to take your company and your child. You don't walk back into that alone.""
I wanted to argue.
But I couldn't.
Because for the first time in my life, I knew I had been too independent.
I had built everything myself.
But I had also convinced myself that needing help meant weakness.
Mason counted on that.
He knew I would try to handle everything quietly.
He knew I hated conflict.
He knew I would protect the reputation of our marriage even when he was destroying it.
Not anymore.
Bennett Financial Solutions looked different when I arrived.
Not because the building had changed.
Because I had.
The glass walls.
The polished floors.
The employees moving quickly through the lobby.
This was my world.
My name was on the company documents.
My signature was on every major decision.
But as I walked through the entrance, I noticed people looking at me.
Whispering.
Some looked sympathetic.
Others looked uncertain.
I knew why.
They had seen the news.
The headlines were already spreading.
Pregnant CEO attacks husband at charity gala.
The truth was buried beneath the most dramatic version.
Exactly how Mason wanted it.
Daniel met me near the elevators.
He looked exhausted.
"Claire.""
"How bad is it?""
He pressed his lips together.
"Bad.""
The elevator doors opened.
We stepped inside.
"Tell me.""
"Someone submitted documents stating you were experiencing severe stress-related impairment.""
I stared at him.
"Impairment?""
"Yes.""
"Who signed them?""
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
"Someone signed them?""
"Claire...""
"Who?""
He hesitated.
Then:
"Your husband's attorney.""
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"Mason hired an attorney to prove I was incapable?""
"Apparently.""
The elevator doors opened.
My office floor appeared.
The same hallway where employees used to congratulate me.
The same hallway where Mason once walked beside me proudly.
Now every step felt like entering a battlefield.
Daniel opened the conference room door.
Inside were three people.
Two executives.
And Mason's attorney.
A woman named Victoria Hale.
I knew her.
Everyone in the business world knew her.
Sharp.
Expensive.
Impossible to intimidate.
She stood when I entered.
"Mrs. Bennett.""
Her tone was polite.
Too polite.
"Ms. Hale.""
"I understand this is a difficult time.""
I looked at the documents on the table.
"No.""
I sat down.
"A difficult time is a broken contract.""
I looked at her.
"This is betrayal.""
Nobody spoke.
Victoria folded her hands.
"I'm not here to discuss personal matters.""
"Then why are you here?""
"Because the company requires stability.""
I almost smiled.
There it was.
The same language Mason used.
Stability.
Protection.
Concern.
Words that sounded reasonable while hiding something ugly.
"What exactly are you proposing?""
Victoria slid a document across the table.
"Temporary management authority.""
I didn't touch it.
"For who?""
She looked at me.
"Your husband.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at her.
"Absolutely not.""
Victoria remained calm.
"Mrs. Bennett, given recent events...""
"You mean my husband grabbing my wrist?""
Her expression didn't change.
"You mean your physical confrontation with Mr. Bennett.""
I stared at her.
She was careful.
Very careful.
Never saying I attacked him.
Never saying he hurt me.
Just presenting the pieces that benefited her client.
"What evidence do you have that I am incapable of running my company?""
Victoria opened another folder.
"Medical concerns.""
My heart dropped.
She placed a document on the table.
A doctor's letter.
Not Dr. Walsh.
Another doctor.
Someone I didn't know.
I picked it up.
My eyes moved down the page.
The words blurred.
"Anxiety.""
"Emotional instability.""
"Pregnancy-related cognitive concerns.""
I looked up.
"This is fake.""
Victoria tilted her head.
"That's a serious accusation.""
"It's the truth.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"We'll challenge this.""
Victoria looked at him.
"You can.""
Then she turned back to me.
"But by then, the company's investors will have questions.""
My hands curled into fists.
Because that was the game.
Not proving he was right.
Creating enough doubt that people would believe him.
Mason didn't need everyone to hate me.
He only needed them to hesitate.
The conference room door suddenly opened.
A young employee stood there.
Her face was pale.
"Claire?""
I recognized her.
Lena from accounting.
"What is it?""
She looked nervous.
"I found something.""
Daniel stood.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"I found the original file that was used to create those documents.""
Everyone froze.
Victoria's expression changed slightly.
"What file?""
Lena swallowed.
"A hidden folder on Mr. Bennett's old company account.""
My heart started pounding.
"What was in it?""
She looked down.
"Emails.""
"Between who?""
Lena hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Between Mason and someone inside your company.""
The room went silent.
I stood.
"Who?""
Lena looked terrified.
"Claire...""
"Who?""
She handed me a printed email.
I looked at the sender.
And my entire body went cold.
Because it wasn't Mason.
It wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't Brooke.
It was someone I trusted.
Someone who had worked beside me for years.
Someone who knew every weakness in my company.
