Amused

Chapter 8: The Document With My Son's Name

The following morning, I received a call from David at 7:12 a.m.

I was making coffee when his number appeared on my screen.

"Marcus, we found something.""

I immediately put down the mug.

"What?""

"The bank sent us a copy of the latest submission.""

"Is it the beneficiary change?""

"Yes. But there's something more concerning.""

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Tell me.""

"The document contains a statement supposedly written and signed by Malik.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What statement?""

David read it aloud.

"Malik Johnson voluntarily requests that his inheritance be placed under the management of his aunt, Renee Carter, because he believes he is unable to make responsible financial decisions.""

I closed my eyes.

"That's not true.""

"I assumed as much.""

"Malik never wrote that.""

"Then we need to document that fact.""

I looked toward the hallway.

Malik was still asleep.

"Can I send you his handwriting samples?""

"Yes, but don't ask him to write anything specifically for comparison. Preserve existing schoolwork, letters, or other documents. We need to handle this properly.""

I agreed.

Then David added something.

"The document also contains a witness signature.""

"Who?""

"Jordan Johnson.""

My blood ran cold.

"Jordan?""

"That's what it says.""

I stood motionless.

"That boy is seventeen. He told me he knew nothing about this.""

"Then we need to speak with him.""

I ended the call.

A few minutes later, I found Jordan in the kitchen.

He was eating cereal while watching a video on his phone.

"Jordan, can we talk?""

He looked up.

"Sure.""

I sat across from him.

"Did you sign anything related to Malik's inheritance?""

His spoon stopped halfway to his mouth.

"No.""

I placed my phone on the table.

"David found a document with your name as a witness.""

Jordan stared at the screen.

His face went pale.

"I didn't sign that.""

"Are you sure?""

He nodded quickly.

"Mr. Johnson, I swear I didn't.""

I believed him.

"Have you ever given your mother permission to use your signature?""

He shook his head.

"Never.""

I waited.

Then he said something quietly.

"She asked me to sign something last month.""

"What?""

"A school permission form.""

"Did you sign it?""

"No. She said she'd fill it in herself.""

I looked at him.

"Did you see what it was?""

He hesitated.

"It was something about Malik.""

My stomach tightened.

"What exactly?""

Jordan put down his spoon.

"Mom told me she needed a witness because you weren't available. She said she was helping Malik get into a better school.""

"Did she ask you to sign your name?""

"Yes.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

He shook his head.

"I told her she should wait for you.""

I nodded.

"Thank you for telling me.""

Jordan stared at the table.

"Am I in trouble?""

"No.""

He looked relieved.

Then he whispered, "I think Mom is scared.""

"Why?""

"Because someone called her last night.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

"I don't know. But she was crying afterward.""

I sat back.

"Did you hear anything?""

Jordan nodded.

"She said, 'I did everything you asked. You said this would be easy.''"

I felt a chill.

"Then what?""

"She said she couldn't let you find out about the other account.""

I stared at him.

"What other account?""

Jordan shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Before I could ask anything else, footsteps sounded upstairs.

Denise appeared in the kitchen doorway.

She was wearing a cream-colored blouse and black trousers.

Her eyes moved from Jordan to me.

"What's going on?""

"Having breakfast.""

She looked at Jordan.

"Go upstairs.""

Jordan immediately stood.

I raised my hand.

"He's fine here.""

Denise frowned.

"I need to speak with you privately.""

I looked at her.

"Then speak.""

She glanced at Jordan again.

He slowly walked toward the hallway.

When he was gone, Denise pulled out a chair.

"You've been making calls about me.""

"I've been protecting my son.""

She shook her head.

"You don't understand the situation.""

"Then explain it.""

She placed both hands on the table.

"I never wanted things to become this complicated.""

"Did you submit a document claiming Malik wanted to give up his inheritance?""

She looked away.

That was enough.

"Denise.""

"I was trying to protect him.""

"From what?""

"From money!""

I stared at her.

"Money he hasn't even received yet?""

"He doesn't understand what that kind of money can do to a young person.""

"Then why didn't you discuss your concerns with me?""

"Because you never listen!""

I leaned forward.

"Did Malik sign that statement?""

She didn't answer.

"Did he?""

"Not directly.""

I felt my blood pressure rise.

"What does that mean?""

She stood.

"I don't have to explain every administrative detail to you.""

I remained seated.

"Denise, did you forge his signature?""

Her face changed.

Then she said, "I used information that was already available.""

I stared at her.

"That's not an answer.""

She picked up her handbag.

"I'm going to work.""

"You aren't leaving until we finish this conversation.""

She laughed.

"Are you holding me prisoner now?""

"No. I'm asking you a question.""

She walked toward the door.

I didn't follow.

Instead, I said, "The bank has frozen the pending changes. David has copies of everything. Dr.

Porter has been informed that you misrepresented my consent. And I'm speaking with a family-law attorney.""

Denise stopped.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she slowly turned.

"You would destroy my life over this?""

I shook my head.

"You did that yourself.""

She looked toward the stairs.

"Where is Malik?""

"Getting ready for school.""

"I need to speak with him.""

"No.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"I'm his stepmother.""

"And right now, he needs space from you.""

She laughed bitterly.

"You can't keep me away from him forever.""

I stood.

"Watch me protect him.""

Her expression hardened.

Then she grabbed her keys and left.

I waited until her car disappeared before going upstairs.

Malik was sitting at his desk.

He had a notebook open and was writing something.

"Morning, son.""

He looked up.

"Hey, Dad.""

I sat on the edge of his bed.

"How are you feeling?""

"Okay.""

"Did you sleep?""

"A little.""

I noticed his eyes were red.

"What's wrong?""

He hesitated.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"If I don't want the money, will everyone stop fighting?""

I stared at him.

"Why would you think that?""

"Because Denise keeps saying it's causing problems.""

I reached for his hand.

"Listen carefully. You are not responsible for the adults in this family. You don't have to give up anything to make us happy.""

He nodded.

"But what if I don't want it?""

"Then you can decide what you want when you're old enough, with independent advice. Nobody gets to pressure you.""

He looked down.

"Mom would have wanted me to have it.""

I swallowed.

"Yes, she would.""

He looked at the photograph on his desk.

"Sometimes I wish she were here.""

I put my arm around him.

"Me too, son.""

For several seconds, we sat quietly.

Then he handed me a folded sheet of paper.

"What's this?""

"I found it in my backpack yesterday.""

I unfolded it.

It was a printed statement.

At the top was Malik's full name.

The document claimed he had voluntarily requested that his inheritance be transferred to an adult family representative.

At the bottom was a signature.

Malik Johnson.

I looked at him.

"Where did you get this?""

"It was inside my school folder.""

"Did you put it there?""

He shook his head.

"Denise gave me a folder last week and told me to keep it safe.""

I stared at the document.

"Did you ever sign anything like this?""

"No.""

"Did you ever tell anyone you wanted to give up your inheritance?""

"No, Dad.""

I nodded.

"Okay.""

He looked frightened.

"Are you angry?""

"No.""

"Because I didn't tell you?""

I placed the document on the desk.

"Son, you don't have to be afraid of telling me the truth.""

He nodded.

Then he said something quietly.

"There's another thing.""

I waited.

"Denise asked me to record a video.""

I frowned.

"What kind of video?""

"She said I should explain why I wanted to live with Aunt Renee.""

I stared at him.

"Did you make it?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't want to leave you.""

My throat tightened.

"What happened after you refused?""

He looked toward the door.

"She said she would make another video without me if she had to.""

I sat completely still.

Another video?

Without him?

I took out my phone and called David.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"There's something else.""

I explained what Malik had told me.

David became quiet.

"Marcus, we need to act quickly. If she's created a recording that appears to show Malik voluntarily requesting a placement, it could be used to support the false statements she's already submitted.""

I looked at the document.

"What do we do?""

"Preserve the original paper. Don't alter it. I'll arrange for an independent review. And please make sure Malik is somewhere safe.""

I ended the call.

Then I heard the front door open.

Denise was back.

She called from downstairs.

"Marcus! We need to talk!""

I looked at Malik.

"Stay here with Grandma.""

He nodded.

I went downstairs.

Denise was standing in the living room with her phone in her hand.

She looked unusually calm.

Too calm.

"I've decided we need to end this argument," she said.

"What does that mean?""

She held up her phone.

"I have something that will prove everything.""

I stared at the screen.

It showed a video.

Malik was sitting in a chair.

His face looked pale.

His eyes were fixed on the camera.

And he was saying words I had never heard him say.

"My father and I have been having problems. I think it would be better if I lived somewhere else.""

My blood turned cold.

"Where did you get that?""

Denise smiled.

"Your son made it himself.""

I looked at the video again.

Something wasn't right.

Malik's voice sounded flat.

His eyes kept moving toward someone outside the camera frame.

Then I noticed the timestamp.

The video had been recorded three weeks earlier.

I looked at Denise.

"Did Malik willingly record this?""

She lifted her chin.

"He knew what he was saying.""

I stepped closer.

"Play the entire video.""

Her smile disappeared.

"Why?""

"Because I want to hear everything.""

She locked her phone.

"There's nothing else.""

I stared at her.

"Then send me the original recording.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

And that was when I knew.

May you like

The video wasn't going to prove what Denise thought it would.

Because if my son had been forced to say those words, the truth was going to be even worse than the documents.
