Chapter 4: The Signature She Couldn't Get
I stared at the authorization form in my hands.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The document looked ordinary enough. It had a bank logo, several paragraphs of legal language, and a signature line at the bottom.
But the words printed beneath the heading made my stomach turn.
*Authorization to Access Minor Beneficiary Trust Information.*
My son had been asked to sign a document giving Denise access to financial information connected to the trust his mother had created for him.
And she had told him I wanted him to sign it.
I looked at Malik.
"Son, did you understand what this paper was?""
He shook his head.
"No, Dad. She said it was something the school needed.""
"Did she tell you to sign it immediately?""
"She said I had to do it before Monday.""
I glanced at the date.
Friday.
That was three days before the dinner incident.
"Did you ask her any questions?""
Malik nodded.
"I asked why the school needed information about Mom's money.""
My fingers tightened around the paper.
"What did she say?""
He looked embarrassed.
"She said I was being difficult again.""
My mother slowly sat down.
"That woman knew exactly what she was doing.""
I looked at the signature line.
There was another section beneath it.
The form requested the name of the person authorized to communicate with the financial institution on behalf of the minor beneficiary.
Denise had already filled in her name.
She hadn't signed the document herself.
She had left that part for Malik.
"Where did you find this?"" I asked.
"In the kitchen drawer.""
"Why didn't you throw it away?""
He shrugged.
"I thought you might need to see it.""
I closed my eyes.
Even at sixteen, my son had understood that something wasn't right.
He had protected that paper because he didn't know who else he could trust.
I turned toward my mother.
"Mom, can you stay with Malik?""
"Of course.""
I took out my phone and called the attorney who had helped Angela establish the trust.
His name was David Whitmore.
He had handled our family's legal matters for nearly fifteen years.
He answered after four rings.
"Marcus Johnson. This is unexpected.""
"I need your help.""
His voice immediately became serious.
"What's happened?""
I looked at the document.
"Someone has attempted to access Malik's trust.""
There was a pause.
"Who?""
"My wife.""
Another pause.
"Marcus, where are you right now?""
"At home.""
"Don't sign anything. Don't authorize anything. And don't give that document to anyone until we speak.""
"Can you explain what's going on?""
"Not until I review the paperwork. But I can tell you something important. Angela was very specific about who could access that trust.""
I sat down.
"Who?""
"Only you, as the surviving custodial parent, could receive information while Malik remained a minor. The beneficiary provisions were designed to protect the principal until he reached the age specified in the agreement.""
I looked at the document again.
"Could Denise access it?""
"Not without a valid legal authorization.""
"She has none.""
"Then she shouldn't have been attempting to obtain that information.""
My jaw tightened.
"David, I need you to review everything. Every request, every authorization, every communication.""
"I'll arrange that.""
"One more thing.""
"Yes?""
"Someone has been threatening to send Malik to a residential school.""
David went quiet.
"Has a placement agreement been signed?""
"Not that I know of.""
"Then we need to establish exactly what has been submitted and by whom.""
I thanked him and ended the call.
When I returned to the living room, Malik was standing beside the sofa.
He looked nervous.
"Are you mad?""
I frowned.
"Why would I be mad?""
"Because I didn't tell you about the paper sooner.""
I walked over and placed both hands on his shoulders.
"Malik, you did the right thing.""
"But I should have told you.""
"You were trying to protect yourself in a situation where an adult was making you afraid. None of this is your fault.""
He nodded.
Then he asked something I hadn't expected.
"Can I keep the money Mom left me?""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Yes, son. It's yours. And nobody is going to take it from you.""
He looked down.
"Denise said I didn't deserve it.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"She said Mom had already spent enough money raising me, and I should be grateful for what Dad gives me.""
My mother made a small sound behind us.
I took a slow breath.
"Your mother left that money because she loved you. It was meant to give you opportunities. You don't have to earn your mother's love by signing a piece of paper.""
He began crying.
I pulled him into a hug.
Over his shoulder, I saw Jordan standing near the hallway.
He looked as though he wanted to say something.
"Jordan?""
He approached slowly.
"Can I tell you something?""
"Of course.""
He glanced at Malik.
Then he looked at me.
"Mom said if Malik signed the form, she could help pay for our college.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
Jordan looked uncomfortable.
"She told Brianna and me that Malik had money sitting around that nobody was using. She said it would be fair if the family could benefit from it.""
Brianna appeared behind him.
"She said we deserved something too.""
My mother shook her head.
"Those children have been dragged into this mess.""
Jordan lowered his eyes.
"I didn't know she was trying to take his money. I thought it was something Dad had agreed to.""
I nodded.
"I understand.""
Brianna began crying.
"Is Mom going to get arrested?""
Nobody answered immediately.
I crouched slightly so I was at eye level with her.
"I don't know what will happen. But I do know that you and Jordan are not responsible for your mother's decisions.""
She wiped her face.
"She tells us Malik gets everything.""
I looked at Malik.
He was staring at the floor.
"Has she told you that?"" I asked him.
He nodded.
"She says you love me more.""
I sat beside him.
"Malik, loving you doesn't mean I love someone else less.""
He didn't respond.
I knew those words would take time to become real to him.
My phone rang.
It was David.
"Marcus, I reviewed the initial information available to me.""
I stood.
"What did you find?""
"There's a problem.""
My stomach tightened.
"How serious?""
"Someone contacted the financial institution three weeks ago requesting information about Malik's trust. The request was rejected because the person wasn't authorized.""
"Was it Denise?""
"According to the contact record, yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"Anything else?""
"Yes. There was a second request submitted last Friday.""
I looked down at the unsigned document in my hand.
"Friday?""
"Correct. This time, the request included Malik's personal information and a statement claiming that the custodial parent had approved the inquiry.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"I never approved it.""
"I know. That's why the institution flagged the request.""
"Did they release anything?""
"Not the financial details. But the second request was referred for additional verification.""
I gripped the phone.
"David, what happens now?""
"We need to obtain the complete submission history. I also recommend that you secure all original documents and make sure nobody has access to Malik's personal records.""
I glanced toward the stairs.
"Understood.""
Then David said something that made me stop breathing.
"Marcus, there is another issue. The trust contains a provision that Angela specifically requested.""
"What provision?""
"Before I explain, I need you to come to my office tomorrow morning.""
"Why?""
"Because I believe your wife may have known about something in that trust that you never discussed with her.""
I stared at the wall.
"What could she possibly know?""
David lowered his voice.
"Angela left a separate instruction concerning Malik's eighteenth birthday.""
"What instruction?""
"I'd rather show you the original document.""
I ended the call and stood motionless.
The house was quiet.
Then I heard footsteps on the stairs.
Denise appeared at the top.
She looked directly at me.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
I slipped the authorization form into my pocket.
"About what?""
She descended slowly.
"About this family.""
I stared at her.
"For once, I agree.""
She stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
Then she looked toward Malik.
"Can I speak to my husband privately?""
I didn't move.
"You can speak in front of everyone.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"You're really going to do this?""
I answered without hesitation.
"Yes.""
She took a breath.
Then she delivered a sentence that changed everything.
"If you keep digging into Angela's trust, you're going to discover things about your first wife that you might not like.""
My mother stood.
"How dare you?""
But Denise didn't look at her.
She kept her eyes fixed on me.
May you like
And I suddenly realized she wasn't afraid of losing her marriage.
She was afraid of what I would find.
