Amused

Chapter 7: The Woman Angela Trusted Most

"Renee?""

I repeated the name because I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

David Whitmore remained silent for a moment.

"Yes, Marcus. Renee.""

I looked across the living room.

My mother was sitting beside Malik, who still held the photograph of Angela against his chest. Jordan and Brianna stood near the stairs.

Denise was gone.

And now my attorney was telling me that my late wife's sister had been named as the backup beneficiary of Malik's inheritance.

"David, I need you to explain this.""

"I will. But I want you to understand something first. Renee was not named because Angela wanted to give her Malik's money.""

"Then why?""

"Because Angela wanted to make sure someone she trusted would protect Malik if you were ever unable to do so.""

I sat down.

"What does that mean?""

David opened a document on his end.

"Angela established a secondary protective arrangement. If Malik formally declined the inheritance under the conditions specified in the agreement, the funds would be directed to Renee for the sole purpose of supporting his care, education, and welfare.""

I frowned.

"So Renee doesn't actually own the money?""

"Correct. She would become the designated administrator under that specific circumstance. The funds would still be restricted to Malik's benefit.""

I looked at my son.

He was watching me.

"David, why didn't Angela tell me?""

"She did. You signed the original agreement.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"I don't remember that provision.""

"Marcus, you signed dozens of pages that afternoon. Angela had already discussed the arrangement with me. She wanted an additional safeguard.""

I stared at the floor.

"Did Denise know?""

"She appears to have learned about it somehow.""

I felt my anger returning.

"Then she wasn't just trying to access Malik's trust. She was trying to manipulate the conditions that would activate the secondary arrangement.""

David didn't answer immediately.

"That is one possibility we need to investigate.""

I thought about Denise's statement.

Ask your attorney who Angela named as the backup beneficiary if Malik ever refused the inheritance.

She had known about Renee.

She had known about the conditions.

And she had been trying to send Malik away.

"David, what happens if Malik refuses the inheritance?""

"Nothing happens automatically. He would need independent legal advice, and the agreement requires safeguards to ensure the decision is voluntary.""

I stared at my phone.

"Could someone pressure him into refusing it?""

"Not legitimately. Any evidence of coercion would be extremely important.""

I ended the call after arranging another meeting.

Then I turned toward my mother.

"Mom, I need to call Renee.""

Evelyn nodded.

"Do it.""

I stepped into the kitchen and dialed.

Renee answered almost immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Did Angela ever tell you about the trust arrangement?""

Silence.

Then a quiet sigh.

"She did.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Angela asked me not to interfere unless Malik needed me.""

"She named you as the backup administrator.""

"Yes.""

I leaned against the counter.

"Did Denise know?""

Renee hesitated.

"She asked me about it several weeks ago.""

My stomach tightened.

"What exactly did she ask?""

"She wanted to know whether I would take responsibility for Malik if he decided he didn't want the inheritance.""

"Why would Malik refuse his inheritance?""

"I asked her the same thing.""

"And?""

"She said he was becoming emotionally unstable and might not be capable of making financial decisions when he turned eighteen.""

I gripped the counter.

"She used those exact words?""

"Yes.""

I stared through the kitchen doorway at the living room.

"Renee, did you agree to anything?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Did she send you documents?""

"One.""

"Do you still have it?""

"Yes. I saved the email.""

"Send it to me.""

She paused.

"Marcus, there's something I haven't told you.""

I closed my eyes.

"What?""

"Denise visited me last month.""

My stomach dropped.

"She came to your house?""

"Yes. She said she wanted to discuss Malik's future.""

"What happened?""

"She asked me whether I would be willing to take Malik permanently.""

I went completely still.

"Why would she ask that?""

"She said you were exhausted and that your marriage was falling apart because you couldn't discipline your son.""

I swallowed.

"What did you tell her?""

"I told her Malik was welcome in my home, but I wasn't going to help her separate him from his father.""

I rubbed my face.

"Did she get angry?""

"She told me I was making things worse.""

I was quiet for a moment.

Then Renee continued.

"Marcus, she also asked me whether I had any old documents from Angela.""

"What documents?""

"Anything related to the trust. Anything that might explain why Angela chose me.""

I frowned.

"Did you give her anything?""

"No.""

"Did you ask why she wanted them?""

"Yes. She said she wanted to understand the family arrangement.""

I felt a chill.

"Renee, Angela chose you because she trusted you. Whatever Denise is trying to do, don't give her anything.""

"I won't.""

We ended the call.

A few minutes later, Renee forwarded the email.

The subject line read:

*MALIK JOHNSON — FAMILY PLACEMENT DISCUSSION.*

I opened it.

Denise had written that she was seeking a temporary arrangement for Malik because his behavior was creating significant conflict in our household.

She had also suggested that Malik might voluntarily refuse his inheritance upon reaching adulthood.

The final paragraph caught my attention.

If Malik chooses not to accept the funds, I believe Renee would be the most appropriate person to manage the arrangement. This would allow Marcus and me to rebuild our family without ongoing financial and emotional conflict.

I read the paragraph again.

She was describing my son as an obstacle to rebuilding my family.

I forwarded the email to David.

Then I returned to the living room.

Malik immediately looked up.

"Was that Aunt Renee?""

"Yes.""

"Is she okay?""

I sat beside him.

"She's fine, son.""

He looked down at the photograph.

"Is she going to take me away?""

I shook my head.

"No. Your aunt loves you, but nobody is making decisions about your life without you being heard.""

He nodded.

Then he asked, "Why does Denise want me gone?""

I looked at my mother.

She gently squeezed his hand.

I took a breath.

"Sometimes adults make selfish decisions. Sometimes they convince themselves they're doing the right thing, even when they're hurting someone.""

"But what did I do?""

"Nothing.""

He stared at me.

"Then why?""

I didn't have a perfect answer.

So I gave him the truth.

"Because Denise has been treating you unfairly, and I should have noticed sooner.""

His eyes filled.

I pulled him closer.

"That's on me, Malik. Not you.""

For a while, we sat quietly.

Then Brianna spoke.

"Can I ask something?""

I turned toward her.

"Of course.""

She looked nervous.

"Is Mom going to lose the house?""

"No.""

"Is she going to lose everything?""

I shook my head.

"I don't know what happens next. But I won't punish you or Jordan for anything your mother has done.""

Jordan stepped forward.

"Mr. Johnson, can I talk to you alone?""

I followed him into the hallway.

He looked toward the living room to make sure nobody was listening.

"There's something you should know about Mom.""

"What is it?""

He swallowed.

"She has another phone.""

I frowned.

"Another phone?""

"Yes. She keeps it in her bedroom drawer.""

"Why are you telling me this?""

"Because I heard her talking on it last night.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What did she say?""

Jordan looked down.

"She told someone that the plan wasn't working anymore.""

"What plan?""

"I don't know.""

He rubbed his hands together.

"But she said she needed to get Malik to sign something before you found out about the account.""

I stared at him.

"Did she mention the account?""

He nodded.

"She said the transfer window was closing.""

My heart started pounding.

"What transfer?""

"I don't know, sir.""

I looked toward the stairs.

Denise had left the house, but her bedroom was still upstairs.

I wasn't going to search her belongings or take anything without understanding the situation.

Instead, I called David.

He answered quickly.

"Marcus?""

"I have another problem.""

I explained what Jordan had heard.

David's voice became serious.

"Do not attempt to access any private device or account without authorization. But preserve whatever information has already been voluntarily shared with you.""

"I understand.""

"Also, contact the financial institution's fraud department directly. Tell them there may be an attempted transfer involving a minor beneficiary.""

I thanked him.

Then I called the bank.

After verifying my identity, I explained the situation.

The representative placed me on hold.

When she returned, her voice had changed.

"Mr. Johnson, we can confirm that your son's account has not been transferred.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"However, we received a request yesterday to update the contact information associated with the beneficiary file.""

"Who submitted it?""

"An individual claiming to be an authorized family representative.""

"Was the request approved?""

"No. It was placed on hold pending verification.""

"Can you tell me who submitted it?""

There was a pause.

"Yes, sir. The request was submitted under the name Denise Johnson.""

I closed my eyes.

"Thank you.""

The representative continued.

"There's another item I need to bring to your attention.""

"What?""

"An attached document references a proposed change in beneficiary instructions.""

I stood.

"Who authorized that?""

"We have no valid authorization on record.""

I looked toward the living room.

Malik was laughing softly at something my mother had said.

For the first time in days, he looked like a normal sixteen-year-old.

I wasn't going to let anyone take that away from him.

"Please freeze all pending changes," I said.

"And send every document to my attorney.""

"Certainly, sir.""

I ended the call.

My phone vibrated almost immediately.

An email from David.

*Marcus, I reviewed the document Renee forwarded. There's a serious inconsistency. Denise is claiming Malik has voluntarily requested a change to his beneficiary arrangement.*

I read the sentence twice.

Then another message appeared.

*We need to establish whether she has fabricated a statement in Malik's name.*

I looked at the staircase.

And suddenly, I understood why Jordan had mentioned the second phone.

Denise wasn't simply planning to remove Malik from the household.

May you like

She was trying to create a paper trail that made it appear as though he wanted to leave.

And I was beginning to suspect that she had already forged something much worse than my signature.
