Chapter 8: The Child Hidden From Everyone

I found Maya sitting in her small apartment surrounded by boxes.

She looked surprised when she saw me.

"Mr. Hale?""

I stepped inside.

"We need to talk about Lucas.""

Her face changed instantly.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

"You found out.""

I closed the door.

"You knew.""

She sat down slowly.

"I suspected.""

"Tell me everything.""

Maya looked toward the window.

"I worked for Vivian before I worked for you.""

That shocked me.

"What?""

"Years ago.""

She folded her hands.

"I was her assistant.""

I stared.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Vivian threatened me.""

The same answer.

Always the same.

"What did you know?""

Maya took a deep breath.

"Lucas wasn't dead.""

I waited.

"Vivian gave birth to him. Marcus was his father. When their relationship ended, she didn't want him to have custody.""

"Why?""

"Because Marcus knew too much.""

"About what?""

Maya looked at me.

"About Vivian.""

She paused.

"About her first marriage.""

I frowned.

"First marriage?""

Maya nodded.

"Vivian was married before.""

I felt exhausted.

Another secret.

"Who was her husband?""

Maya hesitated.

"Someone who disappeared.""

The room became colder.

"Disappeared?""

"Nobody knows what happened.""

I stared at her.

"You think Vivian had something to do with it?""

Maya didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

That evening, I met with investigators.

The deeper they searched, the uglier it became.

Vivian had built her entire life around controlling information.

Controlling people.

Controlling stories.

But there was one person she couldn't control anymore.

Me.

And she knew it.

She left that night.

No warning.

No goodbye.

Just a message.

"We need space.""

I read it three times.

Then laughed.

Space.

After everything.

Space.

The next morning, James called.

"Daniel.""

His voice sounded serious.

"We found Lucas.""

I stood immediately.

"Where?""

"Before I tell you, you need to prepare yourself.""

"Just tell me.""

A pause.

"He is twelve years old.""

I froze.

"Twelve?""

"Yes.""

"But Vivian said...""

"I know.""

My hands tightened.

"Where is he?""

James answered.

"In a private school under a different last name.""

My heart raced.

"Who raised him?""

James hesitated.

Then:

"Someone you know.""

I felt a chill.

"Who?""

The answer came quietly.

"Maya.""

I closed my eyes.

Everything connected.

Maya hadn't just been our nanny.

She had been protecting Lucas.

Protecting Vivian's secret.

Protecting a child.

I drove to the school.

And when I saw him...

I stopped.

Because there was no doubt.

Lucas had Vivian's eyes.

Marcus's expression.

And my heart broke for a child who had spent his entire life hidden.

He looked at me carefully.

"Are you Daniel?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

He looked down.

"She told me you were dangerous.""

My chest tightened.

"Who?""

"My mother.""

I swallowed.

"What did she tell you?""

Lucas looked away.

"That you took away her happiness.""

A twelve-year-old boy carrying his mother's bitterness.

I knelt.

"Lucas, I don't know what you've been told.""

He looked at me.

"But I want you to know something.""

"What?""

"You deserved the truth.""

His eyes filled slightly.

Then he whispered:

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Are you my family?""

I didn't know how to answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

But I knew one thing.

Nobody deserved to grow up feeling unwanted.

"I don't know what the future looks like.""

I said.

"But I know you matter.""

He looked at me.

And for the first time...

He smiled.

Then my phone rang.

It was James.

I answered.

"Daniel, we have a problem.""

"What?""

His voice lowered.

"Vivian wasn't running away.""

"Then where was she?""

A pause.

"She went to the police.""

My heart sank.

"Why?""

May you like

James took a breath.

"She's accusing you of kidnapping Lucas.""
