Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Plan

"Marcus Reed.""

The name echoed in my head.

I knew that name.

Everyone in my industry knew that name.

Marcus was a former business partner.

A man I trusted.

A man who nearly destroyed my company five years ago.

He had lost millions after a failed investment.

And he blamed me.

But I never imagined he would become part of my family’s nightmare.

My attorney, James, sat across from me.

"He has been communicating with Vivian for months.""

I stared at the documents spread across the table.

"How?""

"Messages. Calls. Financial transfers.""

I felt sick.

"My wife was working with my former partner.""

James nodded.

"And it looks like they planned to take control of your assets.""

I looked toward the window.

The city outside continued moving.

People walked.

Cars drove.

Nobody knew my entire life had cracked open.

"What about Maya?""

James looked serious.

"She was probably a distraction.""

A distraction.

That was the worst part.

An innocent woman had been arrested because someone needed a villain.

And my children had watched it happen.

I returned home that evening.

The house felt different.

Every room carried memories that suddenly felt fake.

The family dinners.

The vacations.

The birthday parties.

Had Vivian been pretending the entire time?

Caleb ran toward me.

"Dad!""

I knelt down.

"Hey, buddy.""

"Is Maya coming back?""

I looked at him.

"I hope so.""

He smiled slightly.

Then Ethan appeared behind him.

He was quiet.

As always.

I walked toward him.

"Ethan.""

He looked up.

"Did I do something bad?""

Those words almost destroyed me.

"No.""

I hugged him.

"You helped Dad.""

"But Mommy will be angry.""

I held him tighter.

"Your job is not to protect adults from the truth.""

That night, Vivian came home.

She walked through the door like nothing had happened.

She placed her purse down.

"Where are the boys?""

"Sleeping.""

She nodded.

Then she looked at me.

"You've been investigating me.""

It wasn't a question.

I stayed silent.

"You went to the storage unit.""

Still silent.

Her expression changed.

The mask slipped.

"You had no right.""

"No right?""

I laughed bitterly.

"You framed Maya.""

"Because I had to.""

The answer came so quickly that it shocked me.

"You admit it?""

She froze.

Then recovered.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

She walked closer.

"Everything I did was for our future.""

"Our future?""

She shook her head.

"You were going to lose everything.""

"Because of Marcus?""

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

She knew I knew.

"You spoke to James.""

I didn't answer.

She sighed.

"Daniel, you have always been so predictable.""

That hurt more than anger.

She wasn't denying it.

She was annoyed she had been caught.

"How long?""

"What?""

"How long have you been working with him?""

She looked away.

"Long enough.""

I felt something break inside me.

"Did you ever love me?""

For the first time, she didn't have an answer.

The silence was enough.

Later that night, after Vivian went upstairs, I sat in the dark living room.

Then I heard footsteps.

Ethan.

He walked in holding something.

A small notebook.

"Dad.""

"What is that?""

He handed it to me.

"I wrote down things.""

I opened it.

Inside were six-year-old handwriting marks.

Simple words.

Dates.

Little memories.

"Mama talked to bad man.""

"Mommy hid something.""

"Maya cried.""

I looked at my son.

"You wrote all this?""

He nodded.

"I thought nobody would believe me.""

I closed the notebook.

"Ethan...""

He pointed to one page.

"Dad, there's one thing I didn't tell you.""

My heart sank.

"What?""

His face became terrified.

"The night before Maya got arrested...""

He looked toward the stairs.

"Mommy wasn't alone.""

I leaned closer.

"Who was with her?""

Ethan whispered:

"The man from the picture.""

"What picture?""

He opened the notebook to the final page.

There was a drawing.

A child’s drawing.

A woman.

A man.

A house.

And a name written underneath.

Marcus.

But below it, Ethan had written something else.

May you like

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

"Mommy said after Daddy was gone, we would be a family.""
