Chapter 2: The Secret My Son Carried

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat in my office long after the house went quiet.

The only light came from the desk lamp beside me.

In front of me was a photo of my family.

A picture taken three months earlier.

Vivian was smiling.

Caleb was holding a toy dinosaur.

Ethan was standing beside me with his hand wrapped around my finger.

It looked like a perfect family.

But now I couldn't stop thinking about one thing.

How long had I been looking at a lie?

"Ethan," I whispered to myself.

I replayed his words again and again.

I saw Mommy put the necklace in Maya's bag.

Children can misunderstand things.

They can mix up details.

They can create stories.

But Ethan wasn't that kind of child.

He was careful.

Observant.

He remembered conversations from years ago.

He once corrected a doctor about which arm Caleb hurt after falling from his bicycle.

He noticed when teachers changed their glasses.

He noticed everything.

At six years old, my son had witnessed something horrible.

And he had been carrying it alone.

The next morning, I found him sitting at the kitchen table.

He was pushing cereal around his bowl.

"Morning, buddy.""

He looked up.

"Is Mommy mad at me?""

The question hit me harder than anything.

"Why would Mommy be mad at you?""

"Because I told you.""

I sat beside him.

"Ethan, listen to me. You did the right thing by telling Dad.""

He looked nervous.

"But Mommy said nobody would believe me.""

My stomach dropped.

"What?""

He froze.

I kept my voice gentle.

"Ethan. When did Mommy say that?""

He looked down.

"Yesterday.""

"When?""

"Before you came home.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"What exactly did she say?""

Ethan swallowed.

"She said grown-ups don't believe little kids when they make up stories.""

My chest felt heavy.

She had prepared him.

She had scared him into silence.

Before I could respond, Caleb ran into the kitchen.

"Dad!""

He climbed onto my lap.

"Can Maya come home today?""

I forced a smile.

"I don't know yet, buddy.""

"But she didn't do bad things.""

I looked at both my sons.

"No matter what happens, Dad is going to find out the truth.""

That afternoon, I went to Maya's apartment.

She opened the door and looked surprised.

"Mr. Hale?""

She stepped back.

"Is everything okay?""

"No.""

Her face changed.

"Are the boys okay?""

"They're fine.""

I paused.

Then I said the words I had been afraid to say.

"Ethan told me what he saw.""

Maya went completely still.

"What did he tell you?""

I watched her reaction carefully.

"He said he saw Vivian put the necklace in your bag.""

Maya closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked relieved.

Then terrified.

"Oh no.""

"What?""

She looked at me.

"You need to be careful, Mr. Hale.""

The warning sent a chill through me.

"Why?""

"Because if she knows Ethan told you...""

She stopped.

"What?""

Maya looked toward the hallway.

"I should have said something before.""

I stepped closer.

"Say it now.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Your wife has been trying to get rid of me for months.""

That surprised me.

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

"Maya.""

She looked down.

"I heard her arguing with someone.""

"Who?""

"I don't know his name.""

My attention sharpened.

"When?""

"Two weeks ago.""

She walked to the kitchen and returned with her phone.

"I recorded part of it.""

I stared at her.

"You recorded Vivian?""

"No. I recorded because I was scared.""

She pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Vivian's voice.

"I need this done before Daniel finds out.""

My blood ran cold.

A man's voice answered.

"Are you sure this is the only way?""

Vivian replied:

"If Maya leaves, everything becomes easier.""

The recording ended.

I looked at Maya.

"What was that?""

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

She shook her head.

"I only heard that part.""

I wanted answers.

But I also knew something else.

My wife had been planning something.

That night, I returned home earlier than expected.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked upstairs.

Then I saw something.

The door to Vivian's bedroom was slightly open.

Inside, her jewelry box sat on the dresser.

I had seen it a thousand times.

But now I noticed something I had never noticed before.

A small scratch on the bottom.

Like it had been moved recently.

I reached toward it.

Then I heard a voice behind me.

"Dad?""

I turned.

Ethan stood in the hallway.

His face was pale.

"Why are you in Mommy's room?""

Before I could answer, his eyes moved past me.

Toward the jewelry box.

Then he whispered:

"Dad...""

"What?""

His voice shook.

"That's not where Mommy kept the necklace.""

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?""

Ethan pointed.

"She kept it somewhere else.""

My heartbeat increased.

"Where?""

He looked at the closet.

May you like

And slowly raised his finger.

"She hid it there.""
