Amused

Chapter 7: The Twin Who Wasn't Mine

I spent the next hour sitting in my office staring at the same spot on the wall.

I couldn't process it.

My brain kept rejecting the words.

One of those boys isn't your biological son.

The sentence didn't make sense.

Not because biology mattered more than love.

It didn't.

I had held those boys the day they were born.

I had stayed awake through their nightmares.

I had taught them how to ride bicycles.

I had been their father.

But Vivian had stolen something from me.

The truth.

A truth I deserved to know.

The next morning, I confronted her.

She was making coffee.

Like it was any normal day.

Like she hadn't destroyed the foundation of our family.

"Tell me.""

She didn't turn around.

"About what?""

I placed the DNA test papers on the counter.

Her hand stopped.

"I had James arrange them.""

Slowly, she faced me.

"You tested them?""

"I needed the truth.""

Her expression became cold.

"You always needed proof.""

"Because you always gave me lies.""

For the first time, she looked hurt.

But I didn't know anymore if it was real.

"Daniel...""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Tell me everything.""

She sat down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

"When I was twenty-three, I had a son.""

My chest tightened.

"What was his name?""

She looked away.

"Lucas.""

"Where is he?""

She swallowed.

"He was taken away.""

"Taken away?""

"His father was dangerous.""

I stared.

"Who was his father?""

She didn't answer.

I already knew.

"Marcus?""

Her silence confirmed it.

I stepped back.

"You had a child with Marcus.""

"Yes.""

"And you told me he died?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was scared.""

"Scared?""

I laughed without humor.

"You built an entire fake life with me.""

"I loved you.""

I looked at her.

"I don't know what was real anymore.""

She wiped her eyes.

"When I met you, I wanted a second chance.""

"A second chance?""

I pointed upstairs.

"You used me to replace the family you lost.""

Her face hardened.

"That's not fair.""

"No?""

I leaned forward.

"What is fair, Vivian?""

"Keeping a child secret?""

"Framing Maya?""

"Using our sons?""

Her expression changed.

"Our sons.""

She repeated the words.

And something about the way she said it bothered me.

"What?""

She looked down.

"Nothing.""

"No.""

I stood.

"What were you going to say?""

She stayed silent.

I walked away.

Because I knew.

There were still more lies.

The DNA results came back two days later.

James brought them himself.

I didn't want to open them.

Because some truths change everything.

Caleb and Ethan sat in the living room watching cartoons.

Laughing.

Completely unaware.

I looked at them.

Then opened the envelope.

My hands shook.

James watched my face.

"Daniel?""

I read the first result.

Ethan.

Biological father: Daniel Hale.

I exhaled.

Then I read Caleb's.

And everything inside me shattered.

Biological father: Marcus Reed.

I closed my eyes.

My son.

My Caleb.

The little boy who ran to me every morning.

The boy who called me Dad.

Was biologically someone else's.

But then I realized something.

The pain wasn't that Caleb wasn't mine.

The pain was that Vivian had known.

She had let me live a lie.

She had let him live a lie.

That night, I sat beside Caleb's bed.

He was asleep.

Holding the stuffed dinosaur I bought him when he was three.

I brushed his hair back.

"You'll always be my son.""

My voice broke.

"Always.""

Behind me, I heard Ethan.

"Dad?""

I turned.

He was standing there.

Holding his notebook.

"Are you leaving?""

My heart broke.

"No.""

"Because of Caleb?""

I stood.

"Ethan...""

He looked down.

"Mommy said when people find out the truth, they leave.""

I knelt.

"Your mother was wrong.""

"How do you know?""

I looked at both of my sons.

"Because love isn't about blood.""

Ethan started crying.

Then he hugged me.

A few minutes later, Caleb woke up.

"What happened?""

I pulled him close.

"Nothing, buddy.""

But something had happened.

Everything had changed.

The next morning, I went to meet Marcus.

I needed answers.

He arrived looking exhausted.

"You know.""

I nodded.

"Why?""

He looked down.

"Because Vivian lied to both of us.""

I hated admitting it.

But I needed the truth.

"What happened to Lucas?""

Marcus's face changed.

"He wasn't taken away.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"He was hidden.""

"By who?""

Marcus looked at me.

And whispered:

"By Vivian.""

I stared.

"Why?""

Marcus leaned closer.

"Because Lucas was the reason she needed Maya gone.""

I felt cold.

"What does Maya have to do with your son?""

May you like

Marcus looked at me.

"Because Maya was the only person who knew where Lucas really was.""
