Chapter 7: The Boy Who Was Always Mine

I read the DNA result until the words stopped looking like words.

Until the letters blurred.

Until the paper became nothing more than a cruel piece of evidence in my hands.

Caleb wasn't my biological son.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Not because of the DNA.

Because of what Vivian had done with it.

She had known.

For six years.

She had watched me hold him.

Feed him.

Teach him to ride a bike.

Wake up at three in the morning when he had nightmares.

She had watched me become his father.

And she had kept this secret.

Marcus sat quietly.

Finally, he said:

"Daniel, say something.""

I placed the paper down.

"Who is the father?""

"We're still investigating.""

"Victor?""

Marcus didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I stood.

"I need to see my son.""

When I got home, Caleb was sitting on the floor building a tower out of blocks.

"Dad!""

He ran toward me.

I caught him.

And held him tighter than I ever had.

Because nothing about that hug felt different.

Nothing.

He was still my son.

The same little boy who hated vegetables.

The same little boy who cried during sad cartoons.

The same little boy who slept with one sock missing every night because he kicked it off.

"Dad?""

I looked down.

"Yeah?""

"Why are you looking at me like that?""

I smiled through the pain.

"Because I love you.""

He grinned.

"I know.""

That simple answer nearly broke me.

Later that night, after the boys were asleep, I sat alone in my office.

The door opened.

Ethan walked in.

"You found out.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He looked sad.

"About Caleb.""

I stood immediately.

"Who told you?""

"Mom.""

My stomach tightened.

"When?""

"Last year.""

I couldn't speak.

"Ethan, why didn't you tell me?""

He looked down.

"Because Mom said if I told you, you would stop loving Caleb.""

My eyes filled with anger.

Not at my son.

Never at my son.

At her.

"She told a six-year-old child to carry that?""

Ethan nodded.

"She said Caleb wasn't really yours.""

I knelt.

"Ethan.""

He looked at me.

"Your brother is my son.""

"But...""

"No.""

I held his shoulders gently.

"Listen carefully. Being a father isn't about blood.""

His eyes watered.

"It's not?""

"No.""

I hugged him.

"It's about who stays.""

The next day, I confronted Vivian.

She agreed to meet at a café.

She arrived fifteen minutes late.

Still elegant.

Still confident.

Still acting like she controlled everything.

"You know," she said, sitting down, "I wondered how long it would take.""

I placed the DNA test on the table.

"You knew.""

She didn't deny it.

"I was going to tell you eventually.""

"Eventually?""

She shrugged.

"When it benefited me.""

The honesty was almost worse than a lie.

"Was Caleb Victor's son?""

She looked away.

For the first time, I saw discomfort.

"Yes.""

My hands tightened.

"You had an affair.""

"Yes.""

"You let me raise another man's child.""

"Yes.""

The way she said it made my stomach turn.

"You don't even feel guilty.""

She looked at me.

"Daniel, you gave Caleb a better life than Victor ever could.""

"That's your excuse?""

"No.""

She leaned forward.

"My point is that you benefited too.""

I stared at her.

"Benefited?""

"You got a son.""

The cruelty of that sentence was unbelievable.

"You think a child is something you win?""

She sighed.

"You always make everything emotional.""

There it was.

Her greatest weapon.

Making humanity sound foolish.

I stood.

"Why tell Ethan?""

Her face changed.

Slightly.

"Because he needed to know.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You told him because you wanted control.""

She looked away.

And I knew I was right.

Before I left, she said something.

Something that stopped me.

"Daniel.""

I turned.

"There's more.""

I froze.

"What?""

She smiled faintly.

"You think Caleb is the only secret?""

My blood ran cold.

"What are you talking about?""

She stood.

"Ask your father.""

"My father is dead.""

"Exactly.""

Then she walked away.

I returned home shaken.

But before I could process what she meant, I received a call.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Hale?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Victor.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"What do you want?""

A pause.

Then:

"To tell you Vivian isn't the only person who lied to you.""

May you like

The call ended.

And for the first time, I wondered if my father had hidden something from me too.
