Chapter 5: The Letter My Father Hid
I read my father's letter three times.
And every time, the words hurt more.
Because my father had seen it.
He had seen what I refused to see.
*Daniel,*
*I know you love Vivian. I know you believe she loves you. I hope I am wrong. But something about her has always frightened me.*
*She studies people. She learns their weaknesses. She knows exactly what they want to hear.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
My father had never been the type to judge people quickly.
If anything, he was too forgiving.
So for him to write this meant something.
I continued.
*The day before your wedding, I found documents in her apartment. Documents about your money. Your companies. Your inheritance.*
I stopped reading.
My heart was pounding.
Maya watched me silently.
"What happened?"" she asked.
I looked up.
"My father knew.""
She nodded.
"He tried to tell you.""
"Why didn't he?""
Maya looked away.
"Because he was afraid.""
"Of Vivian?""
She nodded.
"He told me she threatened to ruin the wedding if he interfered.""
I couldn't breathe.
My father had carried this secret until he died.
And I had spent years believing he simply didn't like my wife.
I kept reading.
*Daniel, love is not measured by how someone treats you when everything is perfect. Watch how they act when they think they have power over you.*
A tear fell onto the page.
Then came the final sentence.
*Protect your children. They will be the first people she tries to control.*
I closed my eyes.
The truth was unbearable.
But it was also freeing.
That evening, I returned to my estate.
Not to live there.
Not yet.
To collect the final things.
The house felt empty.
Almost like it knew something terrible had happened inside it.
I found Ethan sitting in the living room.
He looked up.
"Dad?""
I sat beside him.
"You should be with your aunt.""
"I wanted to wait for you.""
I smiled sadly.
"What are you thinking about?""
He looked at the floor.
"Is Mom still my mom?""
That question broke me.
I pulled him close.
"Yes.""
"But she hurt us.""
"Yes.""
"Can someone hurt you and still love you?""
I didn't answer immediately.
Because he deserved honesty.
"I think some people love the idea of having someone. But they don't always know how to love someone properly.""
Ethan was quiet.
Then he whispered:
"I miss Maya.""
"I know.""
"Can she come back?""
I smiled.
"I think she would like that.""
A noise came from upstairs.
I stood immediately.
Someone was in the house.
I walked toward the stairs.
"Ethan, stay here.""
I reached the hallway.
The bedroom door was open.
Inside stood Vivian.
She was holding a suitcase.
"You shouldn't be here," I said.
She looked at me.
"I came to talk.""
"There's nothing left to say.""
"There is.""
She stepped closer.
"I made mistakes.""
I almost laughed.
"Mistakes?""
Her eyes hardened.
"You think you're innocent?""
That surprised me.
"What?""
"You abandoned me.""
The accusation was so unexpected I almost couldn't process it.
"You betrayed me.""
"I did what I had to do.""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"You built a world where I had everything except control.""
There it was again.
Control.
Everything came back to that.
"You never loved me," I said.
For a moment, she looked almost offended.
Then she smiled.
"You were useful.""
The words were quiet.
But they were enough.
I reached into my pocket and turned on the recording device.
Because I needed her to say it.
Not for revenge.
For my children.
For Maya.
For the truth.
"You planned everything?""
Vivian looked at me.
"Yes.""
The room went cold.
"With Victor?""
"Yes.""
"The jewelry?""
"Yes.""
"Maya?""
She sighed.
"She was a problem.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Why?""
"Because she cared about the boys.""
That answer destroyed me.
Because it confirmed everything.
Vivian walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
"You think you won?""
I looked at her.
"You lost everything.""
She smiled.
"No, Daniel.""
She opened the door.
"I still have one thing.""
"What?""
She looked toward the living room.
Toward Ethan.
And whispered:
"I know something about your sons that you don't.""
Then she walked away.
I froze.
Because for the first time since this nightmare began...
I wasn't thinking about my marriage.
I wasn't thinking about money.
I wasn't thinking about revenge.
May you like
I was thinking about my children.
And wondering what secret my wife had been hiding about them.
